Maths Contest: Numbers - Arrive as close as possible to a target value Game 1

in #steemit7 years ago

Last week I started a game Scrabble it was the first game contest I held and it went of with mixed success. The reason it didn't go as well as I had hoped is that I wasn't counting on people using internet to find cheat websites for scrabble. Nevertheless I will still honor the prizes(payout is tomorrow); however the game will be changed this week in such a way that those websites or others wont help, which leads me to the new game. If you are in the UK/Australia or even some other countries you might be familiar with a show called Letters and Numbers. Today we are focusing on Numbers.

How does it work? You get a set of numbers that you can use a range of functions to get as close as possible to a target value. You have to use each of the numbers and you can use them once only. The functions that you can use are:

  • plus
  • minus
  • divide
  • times
  • root (dont know how to include the sign for root on here)
  • ^ (powers)
  • () brackets

SO for example if numbers you have been given are 3 , 4, 7, 10, 125 and the target is 37

Then you could do this : (10-4) * (3rd root of 125) +7 = 37 (notice each and all values used once)(whats in brackets can be done separately so dooesnt need to be all in one line)

In the above case we got the perfect answer. Means you get the first prize if you wrote it first. However you can get 2nd prize by getting as close as possible to 37 as well or if you found a new way to get to 37. Just remember if you rearrange it you havent got a new solution an eg.:
7+ (10-4) *(3rd root of 125) = 37 this answer is correct but it wont get counted if someone allready had the one above, since its only rearranged.

The perfect score is 1st(if there is more than 1 way to get there; then the one that posts the 2nd perfect score is 2nd etc.). If you lets say got to a score of 38 and another person got a score of 36 we then have a tie since youre both of by 1 point. The first 3 people get prizes. Most important criteria is perfect score and second one is time (so if 10 people found 10 different ways to get to perfect score then we will go by time so first 3 that got it).

First Prize is 15% of the payout.
Second Prize is 10 % of the payout
Third Prize is 5% of the payout

The numbers are 2, 5, 6, 17, 20 with the target being 223

In order to be in the draw you need to Comment (the way you got the answer) Upvote and Resteem.
Best of luck!

Sort:

(2 * 5) * 20 )+6+17 = 223

Good, youre fast. Grats, seems you are first. Still 2nd and 3rd position open for others to get in on

Yo.. I am really bad with exponential math. Glad this wasn't one 😁

Hmm maybe next game should be that... Just kidding ;)

((2 * 5) * 20 )+6+17 = 223
Need two open parenthesis at beginning.

True but thats just being pedantic. You still have chance to get 2nd/3rd. Need a different way to get to 223 or as close as you can. Oh and remember to resteem pls

I thought it was over... I was just clarifying accuracy. Cheers.

Over for first prize, not 2nd and 3rd

Thank you, i completely missed that
