Following back, spam comments and... OK, dear new steemians, it doesn't work like that!

in #steemit7 years ago

A few days ago @steevc wrote a post like this, and I already thought that I will not do it myself, but damn, I have to say it aloud!

I check out my personal feed (aka home) and general feed of steemit every day, and I vote for posts that I think are interesting.  I also have a list of bloggers who ALWAYS have my upvote with help of steemvoter, cause I know that they ALWAYS create good content and I don't want to miss it. And I follow people who write interesting posts, interesting for me.

Pic credit

I don't do "follow for follow". Guys, that's not how steemit works!

I'm especially "happy" when I see someone saying "Why don't you want to give something that took you yourself no effort to receive". Damn, REALLY?

  • Point one.I'm here on steemit for five months,  and for these five months I'm posting EVERY DAY. It's close to half year of everyday work. Yes, sometimes I do posts about my dog or about my life, some bloggy stuff, but in general I try to do my best in making my blog interesting. I write posts about artists, try ti remember and collect interesting information and analyze it. If I post my art - be sure, behind each piece there're hours of work. If that's "no effort" - OK, then I don't know what's an effort enough for blogging.

  • If I'll follow everyone who asks me about it it will end up with missing great posts from my friends here, Even if I will - what will it change? My "Home" feed will just explode, and I'll have no opportunity to upvote anyway.  I check out general feed really regularly. And believe me, I notice interesting posts.

  • Next point. Attacking me in steemit chat. Just throwing me a link and a postscript "Upvote and follow"! Dude! At least say "HI"!!! Usually I use steemit chat to... chat with friends and to discuss art commissions. And that's it. Not to receive  a random link on a post about a lipstick  (true story), with some random writing. That you a lot, my lips are tattooed! So I don't need a lipstick and a link to a post about it. I ALWAYS react if someone I know asks me to check out the post, or something like that, but for first I need to know the person, or at least the post must match my interests, they're pretty clear from my blog. Art posts, MMORPG graphic, geeky series - no lipstick, please.

  • Next point! What's wrong with people who write "Nice post, please check out mine" or "I followed and upvoted you, please do the same" under the posts that are... Hm... Under posts about diseases, or lost of beloved animals (seen that), or any other content that is not about "Nice posting"? I have two versions of what's going on. Either they don't read it at all (then it's spamming), or they're dangerous sociopaths. Something like that. It really pisses me off.

OK, may be I'm overreacting. But anyway, dear new steemians, it doesn't work like this!

I am a newbie ( no even one week) . I realize already the quantity of followers is not important but is the quality!. Follow to follow doesn't work for me because what the point if u have 200 followers and only 15 upvotes per post...( i see a few ones here). Lets be honest most of people ARE here for easy money.. thats why they gonna fail.. i dont mind take 2 or 3 moths to get 100 followers but if half upvote my posts like is happening now i will be happy!!! Also i am only following people with similiar blogs and interests.. its just make sense that trading posts and information can also help me growing on steemit.. and everyone won!!! Best regards !!!!

You're right, I act exactly the same. Following blogs with endless selfie's are no interest for me, but if I see good and interesting content - I'll definitely follow:)

Quality always supercedes quantity. The trick is to find the intersection of both, and that's how you can turn Steemit into a method of self-sufficiency. I've been here for almost a year and I'm not there yet, but I'm working on it :D

We all do. That's the only way to go - you improve yourself, and other do it with you. I'm also not there yet, but I'm trying. And as it's said in my country "If you put enough effort you can fly to space" (in my native it's rhymed, ha-ha:)

eggzackerly right...you want followers of quality... the type that don't give up,..don't cry and whine. You want the kind of followers who will GROW in a few months they will have the POWAH..steem power that is...and when they vote for you it will have THRO WEIGHT...cultivate your followers..help them grow to be whales.
that's the 'get rich scheme' on Stemmit.

Indeed!!!!!😀 best regards!

I'm not "against" helping to grow, I'm "for" it. But one upvote will not change anything. I resteem if I see something interesting, but following everyone... I'm not sure I want my feed full of something I'm not interested in

you've got it exactly right
upvote and follow those that you are interested in.
Period. Dot. End of discussion.
It's up to YOU....and don't let them shame you by say BS about community
community is socialism...the absolute opposite of decentralized.
Steemit is decentralized...you, as an individual, can do as you damn well please.
Keep in mind that there are ALWAYS consequences. Either from the doing, or the NOT doing.

I totally agree with this post. I've seen so many copy+paste comments lately, and it's really beginning to become annoying. The ones I dislike the most are the people who PM on steem.chat like you said, just posting their links and write "comment and follow plz". No, I'm not gonna do that if they can't even write a few words first.

Right! No "Hi", not a word!

Steemit chat direct messages are the worst for me. Maybe flagging people who such things will no longer make it a thing.

I'm already close to it.

The ones that really get me are when I write a post about not follow begging, and I get legitimate follow beggars. The ironic ones are groaning-funny, but the authentic beggars are just offensives to me.

Feel the same as you do. Even when I wrote this one I got a follow beggar on the previous one

Yep, people need to learn that when they are commenting on a post they are suppose to be giving their thoughts or opinions but saying "hey follow me" adds no value and instead angers the author. Giving real thoughtful equals more followers then spamming.

Indeed! And this is how it really works:)

I agree. I like when the people kind of interesting me about their blog and themselves then I am getting curious to check it out. The new steemians have excellent ideas and great posts but sometimes they screw up of being so in rush or push it. A lot of times happens that great shots or paints drew my attention so I jump in the post right way. I don't like spam. I wish you great steemian community 🤗 Very good one post full good advices. You did great. Up our and resteem.

Thank you for stopping by:) I also check out and jump to the posts, but I think I'll never do it again with spammers

That's what I said so I don't like spam. I stay away from them. It is obvious to say what we think and how do we feel. 🤗

I think a made a similar comment in another post about the same topic. Part of the issue is that a lot of people do not have social skills. They aproach online interactions the same way they do it with their personal lives. Instead of having a real conversation they are blunt and superficial.
It's more likley that you will gain a new friend if you show interest in what someone else is saying or in our case what they wrote about.

I'm the one with no social skills in real life:) Well, almost none - it's just I'm too shy at first, and sometimes it looks like being rude. But on-line I feel more freely. For example it's much more easy for me to write a nice comment under the post and ask a person about something he/she wrote about then to stop someone in the street and do the same, ha-ha:)

I totally get what you are saying.

Well said! Steemit was bound to attract this sort of user, but we can show them that's not going to gain them much. Persistent spammers will get flagged. It's up to us to moderate

I don't think I'm powerful enough for moderation, anyway I'm afraid to flag people:) But I'm good at muting:)

No, you're not overreacting. It's called "vote/follow bartering", and it doesn't fly here very well. The people doing it are either new or bots. I'm betting a good blend of both.

Sending someone an unsolicited private message with no intention of being human to the person you're messaging is spam. It's no different than knocking on someone's front door, making them get up out of their comfy chair, only to throw a business card in their face and run away once they open the door.

I imagined that:) About IRL;) Still laughing - have a good imagination;)

Absolutely... I spend hours thinking about and writing my posts and get a comment like "follow me" No good post, nice work, anything but follow me! No Thanks!!!

Exactly!

What do you know... I just got another one on my last post! (at least this guy said nice job lol) I think I'm friends with your Mom!

Really?:) @animal-shelter?:)

Yes, thanks! I couldn't think who it was... I just remember her post that you had bought her a laptop and I was wracking my poor little brain who it was. When I get off into the "writing zone" not much else goes on in my head!

That's so cool:) Yes. it's my mother's account:) It took me several months to get her to steemit and now she doesn't regret, ha-ha:)

I always like her posts and we both love animals!

As of this time I have 110 followers and my latest post got a 22 upvote but still I got 0.42 SBD. Some got a 5 upvotes but 1.42 SBD. Despite the fact that you have a lot of followers it doesn't mean that you will get more SBD. Steem power matters!

That's right! Sometimes I get 1$ on my post, sometimes more, sometimes a lot. And it doesn't depend on my 1000+ followers at all

You make some good points here. I need to cull some of the people I'm following, who I followed when I joined. Now I'm missing the good stuff I want to see cos I'm seeing so much junk.

True, right?

Hajajaha you are right! I've been here for a month, I never begged for a vote or follow up, but found several users do it. It reminds me to instagram spam followers!

Really, like in instagram:)

Dear folks..... Y dont u understand, it is not Facebook, It is Steemit.... Understand and maintain the difference....

I think we'll never explain:(

This post received a 2.5% upvote from @randowhale thanks to @inber! For more information, click here!

Congratulations @inber!
Your post was mentioned in my hit parade in the following category:

  • Comments - Ranked 5 with 188 comments

Oh wow.. When I wrote it I had no idea that it'll get that much feedback

Yes, it is a nice post. I see your point @inber :) But sometimes people need to start somewhere.

Yes, but why in such way? There're other options that doesn't involve spamming

I am new here since a few days, but i agree.
Also i believe you have to be yourself, and just enjoy.

I like it feeling of freedom steemit gives + money should be the last thing on your list to worry about in life (my filosofie), be happy and life will live it self.

Cheers!:)
Being yourself is a key to good posting too;)

Inber- I agree that follow for follow or just commenting for the sake of commenting such as "nice post" has no meaning. As to Chat room etiquette - I am very new to all this but know that as a gentleman, I will always say Hello first before jumping into the topic.

I am a minnow (just 5 days old) and in my eagerness to reach a lot of Steemians with my blogs with a certain message, I have been committing two mistakes - 1) following a lot of people in the hopes they follow back

  1. Putting a request in my comments about helping me by resteeming. Ofcourse, I have always read articles, thought and then put meaningful expanded comments and also, usually have tried to request resteems of blogs which have a cause - in my case either wildlife related or deforestation related like this one - https://steemit.com/portraitcontest/@vm2904/portraitcontest-baboon-reflecting-on-life-entry-1

However, I realize that this way may be intrusive.

I think you do thoughtful blogs even for color challenges - like doing an adaption of painting etc. to link the challenge with your art. I am therefore following you.

I leave it to your better (obviously :-) ) judgement to see my blogs and decide if you want to follow.

Regards.
A minnow

Yes, these two were mistakes:) However you got it fast:) Thank you for stopping by, and good luck!:)

Thank you

100% agree. There's a fine line between spamming someone and not putting yourself out there that we have to walk along (okay, it's maybe not THAT fine but yea) and I'm certainly closer to the quiet side of that line.

I want to promote myself more but I'm not confident enough put myself out there, but by the same token I won't gain that confidence until people start seeing what I'm writing and giving feedback, but if I don't put it out there they won't see it ~circles!~

I'm lucky to have a few people who resteem me and push my content to the right places (I'm looking at @gmuxx and @liberosist mostly!)

Anyway, thank you for the post, a great read! :)

That's it. It's physically impossible to make a feedback for 1000+ follow, strange how people can't understand this.
I'm also a follower of @gmuxx. I hardly can understand half of his blog, but we share Star Wars fan interest:)

Yes , its true and believe me you dont overreacting.

I try to stay calm and nice, but damn, it becomes a common tendency!

Stay calm and give us posts with your artwork. That is my oppinion. :)

I think that's exactly what I will do:)

Absolutely agree, luckily those spam posts are nearly never succesful. :-)

True... Well, sometimes I check out, for the sake of interest. And in 99% cases it appears that thy put must more effort in spamming, then in creating good content.

Its True, the point is many people only want to upvote/follow for money, money, money and dont help others acounts with Question, Answers or other things; is outrageous the people cant said Hi or Welcome in the Reply Box.

Nice critict about that, good Post lady :D

No "Hi" and "Welcome", really. As if it takes too much time

Thanks for the advice @inber, For me, I think the best thing for me is to improve myself, then post more about my life, when I do that; then friends can help direct my steps for good and I in return may also influence some lives positively through this platform.

Well said!:) That's exactly what I'm trying to do. To post something interesting I have to do something interesting first:)

I hope all the newbies read this. This usually happens whenever there's a large inflow of new users to any social network getting popular. I remember getting Facebook friend requests from people I didn't know, and seeing a ridiculous amount of "kfb"(kindly follow back) tweets on Twitter. As Steem grows and matures this type of behavior should (hopefully) dissipate.

OMG... Haven't seen this on facebook. May be it's just I have much less popular blog there, just a few friends

I don't even blog there. This was like 2007-ish, people were sending friend requests based on the schools we both went to, whether I actually knew them or not.

Oh wow... I'm not sure I'd love to meet all the people I went to the same school with:)

Heres a tool to see if "follow-for-follow actually works
https://steemit.com/steemit/@farmandadventure/how-to-see-if-you-have-been-muted-or-unfollowed

I'll bet if people check these stats, they'll see that they've been dropped by a lot of people they thought were "helping". Only follow the quality content, its the natural filter for Steemit!

Oh man, just flipped through your blog and art while at a stoplight...I AM AMAZED! I may need your talent soon...followed!

Will luckily help:) Feel free to contact me in steemit chat if you need a picture;)

So true! Now I'll already more likely mute then follow

Nice post, please check out mine!

JOKING! :D Yeah there also seems to be a lot of people just posting images from google with sentences like "What do think of this? Comment below". Wow, thanks for that mate...

I saw posts like that. It really surprises me though. And it's a good scenario if they at least give a credit.

Yeah at least. There's already Instagram/Reddit/Facebook/Tumblr for all that poop

So true, damn, sooo true...

By the way, I just followed you :D Ha

your lips are tattooed?! That's genius :D

Permanent make up:) My eye are also tattooed;)

followed you - follow me back? :P

JK and I agree it's pointless and kinda goes against the premise of steem...
But I guess it's always been like on other platforms such as twitter as well and I guess it works to some extent after all...

Having said that: Good content will get you further in the long run!

I BAN in instagram all the time. People just sign you of the photos of "promotion in instagrsam" and other shitty stuff. Luckily we don't have here this feature. And luckily I have no twitter:)

He he he he that also happened to me no hie no what just Upvote and resteem "seriously!!!!"

Seems like the monkey shares your frustration;) And me too;)

yes it does. hahaha

I hear you :-) I have only been on SteemIt a few days and have seen it over and over on posts where it just doesn't seem justified as you mentioned. It's one of those internet things that just won't go away - a carryover from the past days of MySpace.

On posts that really interest me, I go through and read the comments from other users as well. It helps me follow through networks of other good contributors and the "noisy" replies do get annoying. Not an overreaction - I'm *sure a lot of people feel your frustration.

Now I already think about leaving such comments with no reply at all. At first I thought it would be rude, but now I already think that spamming me is rude

It's a tough call on the response though. I have seen a few posts where the author got into a back/forth reply war and it went ugly fast. Then you get a bad vibe for the author as well, who was not in the wrong to begin with, but just reach a point and snapped.

Did the same once. Had to mute that guy as a result. I'm here not for spoiling my mood after all

All good points @inber

I am having a problem keeping up with my feed and just this morning decided I need to trim it from the 600 odd I am following.

I try to support my fellow minnows in the #minnowsupport so if people really want me to follow them, at least be a member there and get to know me in our Discord chat. Follow for follow doesn't cut it here and looks crass. If I cut anybody from my list please don't take it personally, I need to do it: if your blogs don't interest me or you are not a friend, I'm afraid you have to go.

I'm still trying to figure out how the minnow support works. I also have two recently joined friends, and now it's already hard to get seen.
I do the same (cutting off) time to time.

Minnowsupport basically is minnows helping minnows, supporting and guiding with the help of a few whales. We have a chat where we help each other out, have a follow train if people need more followers and have the use of a few voting bots which gathers the power of all us minnows to give more weight to votes.

Oh, thanks for clarifying!:)

Ohh dear what to say i just chek and if its something i am intrested in i follow or upvote :)

I do the same, and there's no need to force me, that's my point:)

Nice reflections..@inber. I have actually written a similar post on steemit. I joined about 2weeks ago and have seen many 'follow for follow' request and I wonder how we would build a homogenueous community on steemit doing that. Relationship isnt formed by coercion. No one pushes us to follow people on other social media platforms. Let's not make the reward system steemit offers as our only reason for being here. I have learnt so much here since I joined. sharing and bonding should be our main focus, the reward is just an extra!

That's right! But only a half of steemians now understand this. Some come for easy money and then get surprised why it doesn't work.

I understand begging sometimes...........like to save the life of someone (maybe). However, begging for someone to be your friend (follower) does not quite fit.

Here, here! I totally agree with you, and it really needed to be said. Upvoted and Resteemed, fo sho.

I was sure I'm not alone with that:)

I have just flagged bunch of comments like that:

https://steemit.com/@izbing/comments

I also wrote a explanation in one of post of the author.

I think, sometimes we should use our SteemPower, to make sure, that this behavior is not spreading.

It's just I don't want to be rude. But it seems like it's be needed:(

You are not overreacting, no way. I feel exactly the same when I see a "Nice post" comment or "Followed you, follow me" stuff. No, I won't upvote, comment or follow anyone that approaches me like that.
That people don't bring value to Steemit.

+1! I'm happy to hear that I'm not an evil gargoyle, alone with such reaction:)

I'm sure everyone who entered steemit before steem reached $1 won't like that aggressive approach either. But "natural selection" will be made, and I'm sure some of those will quit or adapt!

By the way yes... I remember steem at 0.004 or something like that

When I entered it was on $0,20, then it reached $0,13 - $0,14 in december-january...and it went down to $0,06 after that. This is the lowest price I remember (but I probably stoped looking as I believe it would be just temporary).

Ooops, yes, 0.04, not 0.004. But may be 0.06, anyway. Not like now:)

Pretty much finding the same thing

I usually just just reply with a link to a couple of my other posts if I get comments like that. Spam the spammer

That's an idea by the way:) But then they may come at night and ask for your soul, ha-ha:)

Nice post, please check out mine!

Ok, just kidding...had to put that in there. No, I totally get it and you nailed it. Work hard on steemit and you will be rewarded. Heck, even if I wasn't a blogger or a vlogger just hanging on here and talking with people in comments should get you enough at the end of the month to get take out Chinese food.

Don't joke like that, I nearly had a heart attack, ha-ha:)
You're right, that's how my first months were:)

I read all of this. I plan on following you now but only if you follow me back. Just in case, I will send you reminders in chat. I will upvote too if you go to my blog and upvote any of my posts. They are all good so you can randomly vote and be sure that it is quality. Trust me. I am not a sociopath. You are awesome. great post by the way. I like your topics. resteemed! well, I didn't resteem yet, but after you resteem one of mine I will do it immediately. By the way, I am looking to buy a phone, you can help by upvoting this comment or any random post of mine. check out my blog. keep up the good work! Amazing insight too by the way.

Remember to check my blog too. Keep on steeming!! Yeehah! Did you get my first three chat messages yet?

Steem on!!

:*

Quite a good summary sir! Well done

I just checked Steemdb and I didn't see your follow or upvotes. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough :D

Definitely not:)

Well said! And you're definitely not overreacting. I think this spammy behavior decreases the value of the whole community.

It really does! 2 minutes away from drowning in spam. All good posts...

Nah, I have been considering writing about this issue as well. You are spot on! I have been on Steemit 11 months posting nearly every day and doing my best to make sure 90% of that content is value add.

I want people to vote on my stuff cause they like it or because it helped them. If I upvote someone I don't expect it back, but the voter reciprocity dynamic is something I struggle with and have voted for stuff at times out of feeling obligated, which doesn't make me feel good.

It's sad to see, but with the big influx for noobs we have seen it alot lately. I understand for some it's just a money grab and I can't even hate on that because that's just a part of society. However, w hen I had 1k SP no one would talk to me, now I get blown up all the time - so a bit amusing.

On the flipside - I appreciate my followers and the support I get from them. Like the saying goes - I'd rather have 1,000 true heads beside me than 100,000 fake people behind me :-)

I have 4k SP - not much, but already suffer from such attacks. I imagine how it feels with yours 10k. May be steemit needs some kind of additional filter, I don't know...

I agree. It is all about quality followers.
Just like any other platform, but the difference is that quality engagement pays here.

Usually those who instantly ask for follow don't have time to gain quality themselves:(

I am very new to the platform less than a week! At first I was just trying to follow and get follows back but I found that most of my followers found the content on there own. Not because I asked them too but by browsing content sections and finding it on thier own much like how I have been building my feed. Also some things I found and commented on resulted in a follow back just because I enjoyed the content and they found my content enjoyable as well. I need to buy some steempower to give my post the traction I need. Thanks for the info @babyfist

That's the rightest way to go - similar interests. After all it's always like that in blogging. My favorite bloggers even don't know that I exist, ha-ha:)

@steevc told me off the other day for upvoting and resteeming plagiarism. I was wrong and that is that, but in my defense Id had a couple of beers.

The point of my extrapolation above, is that its great to see people looking out for the platform, and for that I thank you.

I'm not that much into looking for the platform, but I try a bit. After all I'm an artist, not a developer:)
