There is no such thing as a free lunch and that’s not necessarily a bad thing…
Let’s face it, contributing to steemit takes work… because that’s a fundamental element of any functional system.
When things are obtained for free or for very little effort they have a greater tendency to be undervalued.
If free hand-outs become the norm they tend to create as sense of entitlement in the receiving parties mind.
When this entitled expectation is not met, then it can lead to bitterness and resentment.
Sometime we approach steemit with the wrong expectations, I list a few of them below:
--endless random clicking of the upvote button will make me a millionaire
--voting on the posts with the highest numbers underneath them will somehow give me the lion’s share of that value (even if hundreds have clicked before me with the same expectation)
--posting endless drivel will make me thousands
--a shotgun is far better than a sniper rifle
--if I put up hundreds or thousands of posts, one of them has to go viral, right?
--spewing thousands of one-liner comments will get me noticed and make me rich
--I deserve it all… for google and pasting memes
--copy-pasting other people’s work without citation makes me a hero
--spam is the divine purpose of the internet and sacrifices must be left at the altar as often as possible
These are just a few. The list is endless, please add you favorites in the comments section below…
Most new user entertain some variant of these notions. How do I know this…?
I was a new user too…
I have entertained a couple of these strategies in the past and occasionally slip back into bad habits. Sometimes the analyst in me does these things just as an experiment to see how certain aspects of the platform are evolving over time.
The title of this post is an old proverb, which has recently been popularized again by Thomas S. Monson.
The moment we consistently and conscientiously engage with the steemit platform and community we quickly see that work is the best strategy.
…even when it’s not consistently rewarded or noticed in the beginning.
Below are a few work strategies that I find win:
--actually spend time reading other people’s posts and comments
--learn from others and apply what you learn
--vote sparingly, but for everything you think adds to your steemit experience
--avoid voting for already high earning posts (it just widens gaps) unless you just can’t resist, because it’s so truly awesome
--post sparingly, give your ideas time to mature and think of multiple different ways to present them
--give others a turn
--help others and do your part
--one day, when you can, be generous
--give back
--get to know others and contribute to their successes
--build community
--think twice before you comment and make your contribution meaningful
--be smart
--persevere
--find your voice
--find you audience
--build your audience
--building reputation takes time
--be forgiving, we are still in the early days, with lots of growing pains
--get over disappointments
These are just a few. Please add your favorite work strategies in the comments below.
I had to upvote this because you're laying out some reasonable guidelines to looking at Steemit contributions.
I'm all for the Steemian who personally wants to just lurk and vote, if that's how they conduct themselves on social media. I didn't even have an account on Reddit so I couldn't vote, I'd just read articles and moved on.
But for the Steemian who wants to contribute content, this is great advice and very important to consider
I was a major lurker too.... steemit grew me a voice!!
Yesterday was the first time in weeks I'd been on fb, and it was to change password with 1password, and to reply to the friend who asked if I was alive. I told him I'm alive and doing great over at Steemit haha.
Side note: it took me 3 full minutes to remember how to use their interface and find the password change area
LOL
Seconded....I remember spending tens of hours on Askreddit subreddit without making a single comment. And Facebook is too full of buddies....
Oh man and once I got the Bitcoin bug, I got to witness the crazy rivalries between r/ btc and r/Bitcoin which reinforced my decision not to create and account and participate. I did learn a lot though
got to love the inter-community politics in crypto
I love this! I feel like the spam on Steemit is rapidly growing, I feel like more original articles that aren't taken from google are getting less attention! I'm glad this was seen.
I wrote one recently! If you want to check it out :)
https://steemit.com/life/@kaylinart/why-do-people-choose-to-fail
the next update will help kill spam and as soon as the noobs settle in it will reduce, we see this with every large influx of new users.
Tanks for this great threat.
This is realy useful for me and other newbies.
I think your passion is a realy good starter. So i hope peaple take theyr time to read and learn from you as a steemit teacher.
I havent seen so great list of wath to do so far here insite, so i actuly would bokmark this site. And share it on facebook an with friends.
We need more kinds of this peaple like you, to suksess in steemit comunity. I like your advice, and hope for more post like this in future.
I think you could do it great here in this comunity.
Cheers mate (y)
You are very generous in your comments
Thank you for working strategy and the analysis of their failures. Added your article to your bookmarks.
You wrote everything correctly. Without a thorough analysis and daily work we will not succeed.
you get out what you put in, admittedly it takes time to balance the ratios.
Tanks :)
Very useful for beginners !
Thanks for alot of quesrtions answered :)
Great, glad I could help.
https://steemit.com/steemit/@razvanelulmarin/so-you-want-to-be-a-content-creator-read-this my point exactly. but you did it better. congrats,. I hope people listen...
@gavvet of work is great.
Please do its best from now on.
your strategies are just great! We need a Win Win situation and a balance on our community. Thank you !
slowing down the sign ups is going yo go a long way to balancing the community
Believe me, I tried to read other people's posts to consume content and comment afterwards.
The problem is that the only social media website I ever liked was Quora. I was active there. Fairly appreciated. That is a platform where intelligent answers with great life experiences are shared.
When it comes to Steemit, it is very difficult to find that kind of content. I have to read 10 same kind of unintelligent posts to land on a good one. That drains my energy.
It feels like I do not belong to this place. I agree with the first part of your post. It has been more than two weeks and I started with same expectations.
I expected that since my writing was appreciated on Quora I may find little success. I never expected $1K, but I thought having $20 to $50 for a post was not unrealistic when compared to the quality of other content.
I also understand the marketing aspect here. Produce content what people want to read. Tried that too. I don't know. I don't want to lose it so early. Will try harder. I just hope that I don't break down and lose faith.
I partly agree with the points made by you in the second part of your post.
Liked your post. So couldn't resist to upvote and comment.
A lot of people will tell Thank you. me too.
Great thread, the tips for posting are definitely the best points, in particulat my favorite three are
I think these are things people are slowly realizing when they are using the platform that it isnt an easy get rich quick scheme, but if you put time and effort in as much as you would a hobby it can greatly pay off.
very true... it's all about how you approach steemit... "get rich quick" is one of the least likely to succeed
My addition to the above is that along with
--actually spend time reading other people’s posts and comments
...we should not "overspend" / get tired / exhausted with this. The quality of the contributions even in comment interaction, let alone posting an article, can fall due to being overworked/tired/sleepy, etc. Patience is also diminished and that makes for less frictionless interaction.
lol... I've done this, to much time on site...
Yep, me too - I learned it from "experience" lol... and I'm sure we aren't the only ones...
Really good advice. As a newbie I like to learn from those that blaze the trail ahead. I appreciate that you took the time to share your thoughts on Steemit.
Well said. If you're here for the right reasons check out the #minnowcodeofconduct
If you're here to get rich don't follow my advice!
https://steemit.com/steemit/@jsteck/minnow-code-of-conduct-how-one-minnow-would-like-to-see-the-rest-of-the-school-behave
I hope this will help alot along my story, I'm trying to make good noobproof tutorials, but they get not the attention they need, I don't mind, seriously, but like trying my best for me is always the best technique.
I like this posting it's good info. But the "no such thing as a free lunch" thing is tired and I wish it would go away. It's supposed to say that somewhere in the pipeline someone ELSE had to work for what you've got even though it was given to you freely.
Lately it's been co-opted to mean, "get off your lazy ass an go do something if you want to eat".
You see the meaning has been flipped on it's head. The original meaning was about respect and gratitude. The new meaning is about fending for yourself.
I recognize that people need drive and ambition, but telling people that the reason their whatever didn't work out is because of a lack of drive and ambition has the opposite effect.
They think to themselves, "But I did try! And I failed! I must just not be good enough".
I once had a talk with a motivational speaker, he was famous for motivating people to get off their butts and go do stuff. You want to motivate people, telling them that they are being a leech (even if they are being a leech) isn't going to motivate them.
You have to talk to their goal centers and get them to visualize being successful. That's the secret to every successful person out there. They were first able to see a successful person when they look in the mirror.
Once you have that mindset, then the rest of the journey begins to fall into place because your drive and ambition surface naturally.
Great post though! I upvoted it because on the whole I agree with you.
As a newbie to Steemit (still learning the ropes), I appreciate this post. I believe I have quality content to provide, but the desire to get noticed sometimes forces those bad habits you referred to (such as posting quantity over quality).
Thanks for this, @gavvet !
Most of us do it wen we are just starting out in steemland.... I know I did it too.
I hope it won't take too much for hard work (or at least for work) to be recognized... :)
Hopefully this has a chance to reach you. Is this the reason for the absolute spamfest today? Just made a little rant/post as I was trying to engage people but really just hit walls. People posting something they don't care about, in hopes of getting a few votes maybe? Just saw a good post and author comments, made me happy
I respect your views and advice and have taken the time to step back and read the advice by many of the whales. I will only do this on my #introduceyourself post, but will you consider reading and upvoting it if you believe it adds value? I was going to try to send some steem power too even though i'm sure you don't need it, but I truly want to show my mom this community. https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@bendjmiller222/my-mom-claims-steemit-isn-t-real-help-me-prove-her-wrong
Very useful to me.. thx
Steemit Quotes Of The Day –
Sometimes life is tough. 諦めない
Wont Wishing Washy Whishy When Win Will Work.... Hahaha...
lol
Thank you, Very good post!!
Hard work is not an accurate description. Rather, try smart work.
Smart work is the best! but hard work will beat no work on many days and often we have to start out with hard work until we work out how to work smart.
Well, I can't not upvote a Thomas S. Monson quote.
I know that feeling "brother"
Ack! There's more of us on here? Man it's like a conspiracy or something :D
Shall we call ourselves the Green Jello conspiracy?
Works for me.
Will Steemit ever implement a "Steemit Groups" feature?
Not at the moment, although the option to follow and have followers is supposedly in the pipes. For now just use greenjelloconspiracy as a tag and I'll try to add a watch for it in some software I'm writing to make this place a bit easier to use. Tag it with that, whenever I see it I'll come by and comment / upvote.
My wife has a much larger social network that she's trying to bring over, predominantly same demographic. We could probably make it explode if we keep consistently tagging.
Want to make the first post explaining what it is? I'm at my post limit for the day.
Something like "The Green Jello Conspiracy Exposed!" would probably land it on the front page :D
You know what is the worst part ? I know these things but I just can't resist. I know I shouldn't be writing 5 articles a day. I know it is better to write 1 a week, even 1 a month. I know it is better to put a lot of effort in making 1 amazing article a month than writing 5 normal articles a day. But it is so hard to resist :-).
@gavvet nicely put , it seems you have found your audience and voice.
You'd think, wouldn't you? But check out my blog. There's reams upon reams of amazing stuff in there. Original fiction, informative articles, community focused stuff. I have made just under $100 in total and that's from a few posts that got $10-$30 each. The rest made nothing, or less than a dollar.
If you look at the posts that rake in the big bucks on the front page, they aren't examples of hard work. They are examples of having been born attractive and with two X chromosomes, whales colluding with other whales, and metacontent about Steemit itself that happens to get lucky.
Give it time... the platform continues to re-ballance itself... only 12 hours allowed on the trending page will help vastly... the obscene payments are actually brought about by minnows bandwagoning the trending posts... once these are lessened then there is more of the pot for everyone... when i joined I had many $0.00 posts but I stuck with it.
Thank you for the words of encouragement. :)
My father is preoccupied at this time with something very important he will get to your replies as soon as he can. I could be of some assistance just ask and I will try help where I can
Yeah it will take work, but at least it will be on our own terms!
Very wise pieces of advice
Agree with you definitely. And 1 reason I believe this can work out because, I'm sure there're more hardworking people around, compared to people wishing this to be just another cryptocurrency that will just change the world by itself.
For now, I can see that most peeps here are trying their luck by posting.
Personally, I find myself more of a person who can give better comments compared to composing posts on my own. (Probably due to the fact that I did not complete my Diploma, thus lacking the experience to write decent stuffs with citations and quotes). Thus I try to compensate it by looking for posts that really deserves to be on the top of trending list, and hopefully that guy gets pushed. But till now, haven't receive anything yet from the upvotes I've given. (I'll continue sniping anyway)
By sharing your 2 cents on somebody's posts can really help too. From my observations, if the 'poster' is indeed passionate about the point he made on his or her posts, they will do all they can to reply most comments. From this point, that 1 comment, can be blown into something else. But sadly, not enough focus are given on comments as of now from what I see. (Got upvoted by a dolphin on my first day on Steemit, earned a petty amount of STEEM, and got motivated on what I feel for now).
Lastly, I'm sure this community will continue to grow rapidly. By being generous with posts that should really be shown to the world, I'm sure it'll motivate more writers here with their contents, and thus making this community one that will be here to stay for long. Passion will drive us all the way, but for most people, passion will run out if it is not rewarded. I'm considering to increase a portion of my savings to increase my SP, even though I'm pretty broke and jobless myself now.
Its a pity I did not catch this post earlier @gavvet. Hahs
Well hi. I’m Elvis Hicks, a semi-autonomous reincarnation of Elvis Presley and Bill Hicks. I have a burger in one hand and a cigarette in the other.
My checks tell me this post is probably genuine, original content.
Thank you. Thank you very much.
(Elvis has left the building)
Thanks for this reminder, gavvet, I need to find my audience and seriously get some more work in, and get over disappointments when it doesn't do well, I'm not owed anything just for the effort :)
