Let's Talk—This is Why Steemit Can Succeed In a Market Where Facebook Stumbled!

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

It's not often that a country comes together to snub a tech giant such as Facebook. Zuckerberg's promise of a incredible digital future that could potentially change a commoners life for the better was concluded as a farce. Indians saw something sinister brewing underneath, even as Facebook's marketing propaganda made 'Free Basics' seem like the knight-in-shining armour that Indian underprivileged deserved, to help them get on the Internet.

Source

Facebook's pretence of giving India a gift of a 'curated Internet,' where it encouraged it's own services, and discouraged other websites was palpable. There was no denying the truth irrespective of how they tried to jumble their marketing speak. It had never seen a stumbling block in it's growth history as it did trying to rip-off Indians.

As remarked by a Reddit user in an AMA with Chris Daniels, Facebook VP for Internet.org which includes Free Basics had this to say:

“I’m sorry for the inconvenience caused by us Indians in not accepting something that is vehemently against free speech and the open internet... We've been stupid with the British East India Company. Never again brother, Never again!”

It's commendable that Facebook wanted to bring millions of people to the internet who had never previously been on the internet. Zuckerberg's argument was that if you get millions from the emerging markets onto the internet, you could potentially provide employment to over 100 million people.

In July 2014, Facebook launched Internet.org in Zambia and in 2016 Google quit this project citing they were simply on trial basis. This zero rated project ultimately became Free Basics for the Indian market. There isn't much to add to this apart from the fact it has failed to make real world impact in getting people on to the internet.

The issue surrounding this wasn't so much that Facebook wanted to bring new users to it's platform in the pretext of providing internet to the masses but also about being in a position to decide which sites it wanted to include in it's list.

The company positioned Free Basics and Internet.org as a philanthropic endeavour —backed by Zuckerberg’s own pronouncements that “connectivity is a human right” —whilst retaining complete control of the platform. This undoubtedly seemed unacceptable as witnessed by it's defeat in India that stood up for protecting net neutrality!

Now imagine, if this was allowed to happen, would there be a possibility that a platform such as Steemit be part of the list of websites that Facebook would allow it's users to view under Free Basics? We all know how that would go!

But the Internet must remain neutral to all.

How Many People Use Facebook in India?

It's no secret that Facebook is vying the Indian market for a multitude of reasons:

  1. A vastly educated population that can read, write and speak in English.
  2. Tremendous and untapped potential in the ecommerce space.
  3. Massive rural population that can be brought onto the internet.
  4. Huge upside for big data gathering and advertising revenues in the billions.
  5. Fast paced economy led by a strong leader at it's helm.
  6. Few curbs on doing businesses online, especially social media platforms.
  7. Strong social media presence of brands and massive demand for business that want to have an online presence.

The list is quite endless why Facebook wants to grab a piece of the vast legions of the internet with a focused approach towards growing it's user-base from India and elsewhere.

The data from the popular Statistics portal reveals some interesting facts. Facebook's American market is saturated as it has already signed-on most number of users it possibly could have in the past decade from it's country of origin. But, even as there are over 213 millions users from India, it's services is just starting to penetrate the audience in South-East Asian regions, and important markets such as India.

Now what if we could get even 1% of Facebook's userbase from India or any other large market onto Steemit in a year? Chances are this 1% may hold some of the best users we could potentially have, who in-turn will assist in mass on-boarding of users.

Why Steemit Can Succeed Where Facebook Stumbled

The core ideological differences between Facebook and Steemit are that Facebook wants to connect everyone on this planet and in the process it collects user data and profits off this big data on it's platform without any kind of revenue share with it's users or any kind of tangible monetary incentive for using the platform. The capitalist outlook is that it doesn't have to give you back a dime because it provides a service that is unparalleled in it's demand as well as features.

Steemit Inc is different to Facebook as it rewards users to participate on it's platform because it thinks your attention, effort and time is worth something! The value that you and content provide is certainly worth in monetary terms and the community on Steemit values your attention by rewarding you with it's Steem tokens.

Facebook's idea of creating millions of jobs using the internet is great. But, it's a concept that Facebook has failed to bring to life at the time this post goes to press, so to speak.

Steemit isn't trying to solve the problem of unemployment or do anything philanthropic. But, by it's design, it has created a world of new possibilities where it's users could possibly earn a basic minimum monthly income by simply using the Steem blockchain via Steemit.com user interface or any other interfaces to the blockchain. The tokens rewarded from use of the platform have a tangible market value unlike the 'likes' received on Facebook which frankly means nothing. This is just one way of looking at Steemit.

Steemit users who are able to grow their accounts through sheer effort and hard-work are able to earn a decent income per month. This requires consistency which not every one of us has but then the potential to earn exists by design.

If you spare a minute to think about the fact that if you were/are someone from an emerging economy where $250/month means a lot of money, then this is something you could easily earn (or might have earned already) on Steemit by being a regular here for few hours a day. Infact most new users are able to make atleast a decent $100/month here from their active participation. I know over a dozen of my own recruits, all of them crypto noobs who have achieved this.

In comparison Facebook wants to create jobs by getting more users on to it's platform. But what does it provide in return for your use of the platform and it's commercial use of your private data? Absolutely nothing!

Steemit as we know it today is nothing but a social media platform that allows monetization of content. But it is evolving and in the future there maybe many user interfaces to the Steem blockchain that might enable Facebook like features allowing you connect with users across the globe, while continuing to allow you to monetise your attention, effort, and use of the platform.

There are plans in the Steemit roadmap to introduce community features similar to Reddit sub-reddits. These features and many more may allow business to benefit by their presence on Steemit. Maybe one day we could use this platform to crowdfund startups and other important projects on a global scale. The possibilities for using the Steem blockchain are truly immense. It's hard to say where the ceiling really is!

It may seem like i'm a Steem blockchain and Steemit.com evangelist.
But, to my credit I have my experience of using this platform to it's potential. Now, after a year of being here, I've been able to focus solely on Steemit to earn a living from writing and sharing on the blockchain, something that I haven't been able to accomplish on my 9 years on Facebook.

Therefore, I am confident that a smart economy such as India and every other nation in the world stands to benefit from the mainstream use of this platform and it's blockchain technology, and enabling this mass adoption will be one of Steemit's greatest successes!

Facebook is a kind of monopolist which is earning hugely from distributing the 'centered' information collected from its users to the advertisers. You know what the irony is, Most of the Indians don't even know how Facebook is earning from using their personal information. And they don't even give a damn about it. They just want something which allows them to share their selfies, their interests free of cost. And when it comes to Indians, they really don't give a damn about anything. I am also an Indian and I know the value of my time and my interest.
Now, lets talk about the Steemit, If it comes into limelight then I believe it can help a lot of Indians to earn a comparatively good living than working in the call centres and all. Most of the Indians has to work in the call centres because of the level of unemployment here. Sometimes people get frustrated by working in night shifts and all. But if they can do the same hard work in here, On Steemit, then they would probably earn a handsome living out of it. I really want to see this happen and I am doing so by making people aware about steemit and teaching them how to use it.
Anyways a great effort you have made in this article to flash some light on this major cause. @firepower
Is there anyway you can recommend me any Indian group on Steemit in which I can actively contribute. Please do share with me if there's any. I am highly inspired from your work on Steemit. Show me some path .

@firepower you are so right.
I have a similar post that shares the same ideology.

@cryptonet Great comment dude. Agree with you. You should logon to #India on Steemit.Chat and help in building the community. :)

We have an up hill battle that is for sure! All of us as STEEMIANS need to do our part and spread the word!

Definitely, Facebook, and such platforms are just using our data as their product. They are earning billions & instead users are getting nothing out of the nputs.
Whereas, in Steemit, users earn in dollars.

Secondly, Facebook data is centralised, whereas, Steemit's data is distributed.

Very nice compare and contrast between Steem and Facebook. I'm a user of both and I have began to use this platform more to post rather than Facebook. Lately I been using Facebook as a promotions place to have new users sign up for steemit. In the group we have on Facebook, users comment their names on a pinned post and we all follow each other as a way of building up our audiences. Continue providing great information for the platform. Great read and I look forward to more material from you.

Thank you very much! :)

If steem will be worth like what facebook worth now, that means 1Steem will be worth $2000 so be smart and invest in steem for long term coz this will be happen in few years

True that! Well said.

Thank you @firepower

This is a WAR Between OLD System and the ONE We are Talking about. But, Leaving every other Cause minor. We can Say, Other Systems are FOCUSED to the Founders and their Team. But Our System STEEMIT ( STEEM.CHAT, eSTEEM, busy.org) or anything else are FOCUSED to USERS of IT.

In SIMPLE WORLDS

!!! They GED PAID to MAKE IT
WE MAKE IT and GET PAID !!!

Thanks - @cWorldV99

But most people here on Steemit are motivated very differently compared to Facebook. I wonder if Steemit will be able to grow organic without being known as the social media that pays. I truly believe steemit has the ability to revolutionize the world, but that will not stop people from using Facebook to share content that they truly value the most without any financial attachment.

Thanks for the motivation and heads up on eSteem. No need to fear! We're making men out of mice

i made this comment ... :P :)))

We can make steemit work better than facebook..........lets work had

Chances are this 1% may hold some of the best users we could potentially have

This.

The early adopters will tend to be young and entrepreneurial. They will make great ambassadors for Steemit.

@firepower this is a very good post hence you earned an upvote from me (always ). pls see my blog and read my post yesterday: Why Steemit will disrup social media and gain market share ...I indicated in black and white why steemit is better and am sure that it will gain market share from facebook however needs a good marketing strategy. Steem is highly undervalued however it will not remain like this for long...so time to power up.

I agree

Good point , success

@firepower facebook is so afraid of STEEMIT, if any steemit advert is allowed to generate awareness on facebook people will leave facebook for steemit, and this will bring facebook to its feet except if the bring a payment method that might surpass steemit, but we both know that its impossible, Mark is so greedy that he is not willing to share any of his wealth, so as to remain among the world Richest people. i advise you create more awareness yourself, just as I am doing in my country, the voice of steem must be heard.

Yes, but this effort takes your time. I am an evangelist of Steemit too. But the platform must offer some incentives for people like you who spend time to "recruit" people.

well it is a pity that they don't, but some of my posts have earned some good upvotes, I hope it becomes better.

Good comment and dude I agree fully!

Facebook doesnt work in China, but Steemit does.

the Chinese used vpn to go outside of china.

Wall street's worst fear...Facebook is the new myspace.

I'll say this.
I have been one that used social media pretty religiously.
It's allowed me to make new friends, find great content, complete video game projects, collaborate with amazing people around the world and sell products like there's no tomorrow.
Then I came to Steemit on May 17th
It may not mean anything to anyone when I say this, but I know what it means to me...
I have completely abandoned all other platforms!
I have found a home here, a place where I not only feel I belong, but a place where I have the largest opportunity I've ever crossed on the internet.
As early adapters to this platform, we have a real opportunity to establish ourselves here and become Kings in the near future.
We're all gonna get rich boys...rich!
Steem the Fuck On!!!
Powerrrrrrrr Upppppp!

Yeah Steem the fuck on! A Steem may well worth $1000 one-day.. I am going to steem on all my life.

Steem on forever!! \m/

No doubt Facebook used by billions peoples but Facebook never give you a single penny even Facebook daily revenue is in millions dollars. But salute to Steemit social platform which give opportunity to every single personality to get in and earn some good revenue by just sharing unique, interested and valuable contents.

The most important difference is that Steemit promotes valuable content! It is true that users are also financially motivated but i believe that Steemit will grow.

nice post, always helpful like this topic to understand well

Steemit is far better than Facebook.

If we get popular in facebook, and we get likes and followers or friends, that's utterly useless if we are not economically benefitted by our original post or work.

On the other hand facebook earns from our participation and uses our private data to advertise.

But here in Steemit we get worth of our work, likes (upvotes), followers and reputation.

I am very happy that I found it and recommend it to everyone I know who waste hours of their time in facebook.

Very happy that @firepower bro is spreading awareness about this awesome platform. :)

Truth. Facebook takes the money from the attention you generate. If you even build a following you have to PAY FACEBOOK to communicate with them! People are waking up to the bullshit they've become a party of. There are much better ways.

Thanks. Glad you liked it!

Few hours earlier i was thinking on same subject, why people are not much aware of/ using steemit..
And here is your detailed article.. Great work!

Thank you! :)

I think the people of India will join Steemit in droves over the next six to twelve months. They are very enterprising when it comes to producing online content.

There is much potential here, that many do not realize.

Yeah! Steemit has a lot of potential in India and other countries!

This was such a great read and I have to say, Facebook will soon enough loose its people and steemit is growing as we speak . This is not a social media where people post obnoxious status or pictures for attention this is information as well as next big thing

True that!

India is a great resource to tap for all such aspects of Internet and for cryptos.

Thanks for the post

excellent work .. lot to learn from you post.. thanks

It's a platform that 's going to make it big. It just makes sense . When people change their habits and try out Steemit, they will see the added benefit. Everywhere you go , you see people interacting with social media. Steemit opportunity and potential is phenomenal. Just glad to be it on ground floor.

True that! :)

Thnx. Appreciate you. Will continue to follow your posts.

I wrote a post about this today as well. I hope steemit can add a few more functions and people will be swarming in to share the revenue a social platform can generate.

Will take a look! :)

Its fantastic brother, thanks for the sharing your post :) @firepower

thank you! :)

Good posting. sorry to hear about India though

Thanks!

You're welcome

you're welcome

Great read from you @firepower. I sincerely believe , Steemit does not need billions of users like FB, we just need the best one here. And also we need active one, what are your views about it?
Quality but not quantity!

True that! Quality vs Quantity anyday!

Facebook not only failed with India but also with China. Zuckerberg wants to connect the world but he's failed with two of the biggest nations. Steemit has many Indian and Chinese users and is truly bringing the world together in a decentralized way!

True that! :)

That's so funny, I posted something similar to this as well. Facebook should be scared of steemit, it can become its own Facebook and beyond. Keep up the good work!..https://steemit.com/steemit/@tylerdurden000/why-facebook-should-be-terrified-of-steemit

Thanks! :)

Great idea. Steemit is the future of social media For those who want to blog. Facebook is more of a social platform to keep in contact with friends and family and see what they are up to. Steemit is more for bloggers to display their work with original content. More like Reddit or with pay.

I am afraid you maybe a little wrong. Get your friends and family in, they will follow you and curate your post always! Build your relationship here it will help you grow better.

So you think steemit is a family connecting platform? I don't see that on here. Looking at trending post and hot post, tells a different story. But maybe you are right and that is what is going on. People are just using their existing friends and family connects from other sites to boost them on steemit. In that case. These post aren't getting Upvoted for good content but only because it is ur family or friend. Thanks for clearing that misconception up. This makes steemit a little harder for someone like me as this is the first social media account I have had.

@lucashunter makes a good point!

But give yourself some time to understand and get the hang of things. :)

teemit is a very new platform unlike Twitter & Facebook. But why put so much time into Twitter & Facebook when you can develop your skills creating great content on Steemit and becoming better at it and maybe even make a living with Steemit. You can then create great content from anywhere in the world.

serious ?

A long but interesting read. Steemit going mainstream will make Facebook's Zuckerberg fret in his pant. Just couple of weeks of been active on steemit I already made more than 7 years of Facebook. That is why I am starting to evangelize big time for Steemit. Thank you for this informative post

Keep at it dude! This place can help change lives. :)

Yes, it is really changing lives and also connecting people. I was at the first Steemit Meet-up in my city yesterday. Met with lots of cool guys . Steemit is simply awesome @firepower. Thank you

we cant compare with facebook and steemit... facebook hold your work and your time by free prices, and steemit paied you , lik that you will not waste your time and your effort

Mainstream need to have a fundamental basic understanding what cryptocurrencies are and how they work. They think it is like paypal and I don't wonder. I try to contribute some explanations which might help 'normal' people to get confident with the technology behind cryptos.
Furthermore are there some promotions going on to advertise Steemit? Here in Berlin, Germany there wold be an immense swap to Steemit but i haven't met anyone who knows this platform. How about promotion-booths which on Festivals and fairs which introduce people to the platform.

I think the HQ has some plans to promote I think and they will do more in the months.

Hey, great article and insight. I am excited for the day when majority of people change to steemit from other social media sites. I am following you now and excited to read your other posts.

Great to have you here!

We all have to move forward, and for me steemit is just one of those places where you can put your heart and soul and it does not bother anyone.
I Read all my followers posts if I dont like it I just dont say anything. Tomorrow they may say something that I really love.

True that!

Considering The Zuckerberg's immense ego, I think that your statement that,

you could potentially provide employment to over 100 million people.

Would more accurately be stated as "You can provide over $100 million dollars in value to The Zuckerberg's portfolio."

Good for you India.

Kick Facechat to the curb.

You mean fuckbook?

ahhahaha! good one!

Facebook exists for one thing. Monetizing their users.

Steemit, from what I can tell exists for one thing, allowing users who are creative get compensated for their efforts. Attracting a base of people who share things that are insightful and have depth.

Of course, there exist the users who think posting pics with one-liners beneath them as "content", but they get either flagged or ignored/muted pretty quickly.

What I like about this platform is that it isn't all celebrity gossip and one-off memes that don't contribute to the conversation.

I like that I have tools to remove things from my feed I don't want or have the inclination to see.

Steemit is about giving the power back to the user, where Facebook is about wringing every possible ad-dollar out of its users.

STEEM ON!!!!

Thanks for the motivation and heads up on Steem. No need to fear! We're making men out of mice

facebook will be no more in few years. Alright watsapp cover alot . Now steemit will cover rest .

Facebook is dogecoin and steemit is bitcoin. Now you can see easily the difference.

Great post.
I always think of it with the mindset that as soon as shareholders put pressure on the company. That's when it becomes more about the shareholders than the actual users. This is happening to Facebook.
With Steemit there is no major pressure to generate profits at the top. This alone creates a huge opportunity for Steemit to grow and take a chunk out of Facebook.

Well said man! :)

You've really enlightened us thank you

Yea u're right my friend it's we see a new systeme here I think it will be better than fb

I like the negative jab at capitalism...

In reality, capitalism allowed Facebook to become the social media giant, and it will be capitalism that allows Facebook to fall in line behind ideas like Steemit when the time comes. It's not the fault of capitalism that so many people are willing and eager to give away their privacy and expect nothing in return. Sure, capitalism allowed Mark Zuckerberg and his team to make a ton of money, but it's the Facebook users themselves that allow their own privacy to be destroyed.

Now that there's a social media competitor with a better offer for users, capitalism will allow Steemit to succeed.

Well said! :)
