A Little Newbie Blues
Okay, I've just been here a month, but the experience is just a bit disappointing. When I came here, it was partially because it was an opportunity to write longer posts that could be done at gab. It was also because this was supposed to be a site that was based on Meritocrasy, where people would eventually rise up through the ranks based on the quality of their work. I thought it was a place where effort was more important than being popular.
I have spent usually 2-3 hours thinking through most of the articles I've posted here. There have been a couple that have involved many hours of research time collecting information and pulling things together. Even so, upvotes have been very hard to come by and I have had the article I spent the most time on get the comments blocked because it was "under-performing". I have been fortunate enough to have accumulated 69 followers in a month, but even so, my total upvotes aren't half that many.
Looking at what else is happening here makes the lack of response for my effort stand out even more. It has become clear to me that a relatively attractive girl without clothes or someone with a cute cat or dog can get tons of upvotes for just posting photos every day. I have nothing against anyone doing whatever works for them, but that is more about being popular than about creating something of value to the community.
I don't have pets and, while I have been doing photography all my life, I'm not going to hire a cute model just to make points with some of the people here. Hopefully, I will eventually break through here with informative articles that are useful to some of the people here. I do have a genius-level IQ and have been working around the Internet for years. So, if anyone ever wants to suggest topics for me to research or look into, feel free to pass those requests on to me.
Perhaps the biggest problem with this place is the rapid growth in new people using the site these days. It has gotten to the point that "New" posts vanish over the horizon after a very short period of time due to the volume of posts being added. I would suggest that the people in charge of this place make alterations to the way user feeds work. If more new posts and posts on topics that could be "favorited" were mixed in with the posts of people being followed, it would allow new posts more visibility. As it is, if your not already following someone before they post, you may not see that post in the "New" feed.
That's my little step back for today. Back to working on quality content tomorrow.
