From a minnow to the minnows. On resteeming and upvoting for maximum benefit (timing)...

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

NOTE: Most people don't use the resteem correctly!!

Both the resteem and the upvote can be a powerful tool for helping out a post you appreciate, or getting your maximum benefit from curating. There is timing involved to get the best out of both. I will tell you what I've found out are the best times to benefit you, and the best time to benefit a post you appreciate and want to help bring attention (and upvotes) too!

.- UPVOTE - .

For your benefit : When you post right at 30 minutes you will get the maximum curation reward. At 15 minutes you only get 1/2 the possible curation reward you otherwise would have and so on. DO NOT upvote in the first 5 minutes or your reward will definitely be smaller!! If there are a lot of votes between the 15-30 minute mark, sometimes its the case you would have made more curation for upvoting 15 minutes after it was posted and getting 50% depending on how much money comes afterwards. This is because you only receive curation rewards for the payout value the post increases after your upvote, not for any of the payout before you upvoted.

To benefit poster : You will give the most benefit to the steemer who posted something if you wait to vote at least until you won't get curation rewards. If you want to give the most for an upvote its good to wait for a post to gain in payout value, because when it does your upvote is worth more more. (to test this upvote something that is worth a small amount, then go upvote a post that's worth a lot in the trending posts. Even if only one upvote goes into it, you still give more steem)

.- RESTEEM -.

For your benefit: If you upvoted a post in a good time and want to help maximize your curation rewards.. Resteeming could help, the more followers you have the more it will help both you and the poster. The only time you don't want to resteem if you are looking to maximize curation rewards is before you have upvoted the post. You could miss a like or 2 from your followers in between resteeming and upvoting it..

getting the maximum benefit for you and the the poster from a resteem is the same.. All you have to do is.... WAIT! Just wait. If you resteem a post that is less than 30 minutes or an hour old, you will do the least for them and for your curation. You want to use your resteem to bring attention to the post once it has been sort of forgotten about. No matter if your trying to bring attention to the post for their benefit or yours. Resteem it when a different group of steemers are on and you will ensure the most new eyes see the post!

My strategy for both: I will most generally wait 20-30 minutes before I upvote a post. If I missed that window and I like the post I will wait and upvote it after a day or two. Since I can't get curation anyway and it help's them get a higher payout. I find it the most mutually beneficial. Then no matter if I upvote during curation or after. I will wait until the post is a day or 2 old and resteem it when people have forgotten about it. Hoping the people that follow me that haven't got a chance to see it yet are online and looking, and that they appreciate it and upvote it too! The best result is if they then too resteem it, therefore bringing to the top of the page on all of their followers home pages.

I hope this helps you get the most benefit out of steemit for yourself or the who's posts you enjoy! You now have the information. Use that and help the posts that deserve more attention get the attention they deserve, by upvoting and resteeming at the most beneficial times!

Upvote, resteem and follow if you like my other posts. Thanks for looking and steem on!

Thanks for saving me the trouble of figuring this out by trial and error!

Oh!, Now, you make me look at your Blogs.

Doesn't matter, if you upvote in a second minimum or 6 days to the max.
If your followers give you , they will get back in their Posts.

I am the Rich Plankton

Haha :) !! But I went through and gave you 20 cents on a 6 day old post and your most recent post I could only give you 4 or 5.. so timing does do something doesn't it?!

Working on a few screens, I know what is going on.
Watching those that just saying but not upvoting. They get nothing.

Thank you!! Helping out big time for new Steemians. You just got a new follower and resteemed.

You are not replying to OP
I got your message instead 😜

See that's the best explanations I seen about what to do about Resteems. Been thinking in back of my mind how to utilize them correctly.

We all have a strategy. Thank you for sharing yours

Thanks my friend for the good information

Thank you for this very informative post. Your blog is a great find, followed you and am looking forward for more posts like this. I have to learn from you, despite a month of intensive learning :)

As a thanks, here are two points on how to improve you post formatting.

  1. Links: instead of putting urls directly, use the markup like this: [Link Title](http://linkaddress), result: Link Title
  2. Headers: instead of .- TITLE use `## Title, result:

Header

Good luck!

I started doing this, and It certainly does make posts look WAY better ;)

Glad I was able to help!)

Thank you for the tips. I almost missed them in all the comments. Following you now, appreciate the help yo!

Thanks, keep up the good work!

Over-resteeming is probably one of the main sources of people getting muted or un-followed.

This is very true. I have unfollowed people who resteem too much - especially poor posts

yes, this and over posting. followed by quality and content probably! What would you say is considered over-resteeming? Just for curiousity. I have an idea of a number I feel like is over doing it. Do you as well?

I may not be an authority, as I've only done it once - on a post I felt would help a lot of people and I also found very useful. I feel the smaller you are, the less you can afford to do it. If you aren't providing original work, and are small, you aren't helping the platform too much.

Ehh I can see what your saying a little. I don't know that resteeming something is hurting the platform though either unless your resteeming the worst posts, and if what you resteem helps other people, then I say it's probably worth it. There are lots of people with 1000 followers that resteem many times every day and they stay relevant. I try not to resteem a post more than 3 or 4 times a day though personally. I hope that is not so many resteem it annoys people!! but I have never really noticed my follower count drop. I mostly keep that number so if someone goes to my blog, they won't only see resteems.. but to not resteem ever, seems somewhat selfish to me also.. thanks for all these responses. I've wanted to know people general consensus on resteeming for a long time!

All very good points. I was a little confused about the best time to upvote, you have made things clearer 👍

What about upvoting your own post? When is the best time?

This is a good question.

Well you automatically do it when you post on steemit. So I'm not sure. I know if you post on chainbb it doesn't automatically upvote when you post so it can be tested there if want or you feel like! Or I will soon and I will let you know..

Also, if you upload your post from Esteem app ,then you can upvote your article when ever you want - not automatically upvoted yourself there.

Thanks , Maybe I get the hang of it one of these days....Lol..Learn a little each day!
Namaste

Yes. It's a fun learning curve isn't it? I wasn't paying attention and my very first post was an accident. I thought I was posting an about me section. Live and learn!

Well said :-) Keep it up!

I'm new here, but I remembered why I didn't like Facebook: way too many posts blowing up my phone! Just earlier tonight I posted a "love letter" to my followers and let them know that if they feel I am over-resteeming, then please let me know! I am open to comments, suggestions and complaints. Hopefully I won't get muted!

Upvoted this at exactly 30 minutes. Raised the payout by $0.04, which is definitely more than my votes are normally worth. Resteemed RIGHT AFTER upvoting. I'll keep you posted on how much I get for curating this

great read. Lots of things I've taken note of there regarding timing. Thanks for the article mate.

What is the benefit of upvoting yourself? That seems weird for me to do. However I've notice after I make a post it shows that I upvoted myself. So is it automatic?

Ya it's automatic. So the benefit is that your post gets it's first vote, but so does every other post. But if you are vested aka you have a lot of steem power then your vote is worth more and you are giving yourself and your post more money from the start. Hope this helps

yes thank u

What about upvoting your own comments or replies? Is that frowned upon? Is it bad etiquette? I don't normally do it because I don't want people thinking I'm a jerk for doing that.

Ehh I guess each person has his own opinion. I personally don't do it unless I have something really good to say that I feel like will help, or it's a meme I want everyone to see. I seen Jerry banfield do it in one of his videos. You can in your own posts control what comments are where by the power you use to upvote all the comments. Comment the best comments 100 and others less if that makes sense.. but someone can come and upvote above your ability to control where it goes. But if that happens, the post probably deserves it!

Thanks for the info!

There is a box that says Upvote post under rewards box on the same line as the POST button if you unclick it, you don't upvote yourself automatically. That way you can upvote yourself whenever you want.

Just read the FAQ again a few minutes ago and was asking myself if there's some timing to it. This post answered my question. Thanks!

Thanks for the info! Followed!!

Thank you for helping us.

I am you though, just another minnow trying to get through school and grow into a dolphin :) !! So we gotta help each other!

These are nice strategies, I wonder how I'll make it work.

Excellent piece! Though not upvoting right away will potentially hold back the person's post from going viral.
I can't help but find the timing of upvotes odd. I mean I
the most money I've made from curating (and I've made a lot curating) was from posting within the first 5 minutes and making a ton off of comments and then getting a good $20 later on. I've never made much for voting after 30 minutes.
Not that I'm doubting you. I know a ton of people have posted the same as you regarding the 30 minute mark but it seems it's worked differently for me for some reason.

Good afternoon Excellent post.

Well personally I've been trying to keep resteeming to a minimum. Not because I'm lazy, but because I don't want to lose my followers. It becomes too spammy if you know what I mean. Instead, I end up just commenting and upvoting as much content that I can digest. And only Resteem the really good content I think my followers would enjoy reading.

Really helpful. Thanks

Great knowledge is power.

I haven't checked to see how long has passed since you first posted this blog....I'll have to start this strategy with the next one!!!

@fitchick check this out!

Ugh
head/desk

This just makes er'thing soooo complicated.
Y'all have so much patience.

And there IS a science to this that bewilders me.
Most because I have all these entitlement issues that don't make any sense ... like, I think there should be free shipping on er'thing.

The point being, I'm so impetuous and fickle and don't have the brain power to time my effervescence of joy when I see something I like.
Dangit.
