A lot of these accounts are people that have invested a lot of money into the platform, rather than building from the ground up. Many accounts are paid voting services; there is a bit of debate about their morality, but what I find fascinating is that Steemit is essentially a decentralised, self-governing society, and it's interesting the different ideas that people have for utilising the platform. It's a bit anarchistic and it's definitely a two-speed economy, but I love it nonetheless. I personally believe that Steemit's greatest contribution to the world so far is as a social experiment.

Yes, I went through quite a lot of the accounts and a few of them just re-steem in return for SBD. Yes, I agree with you. It is definitely a very interesting social experiment and it is also quite a bit of fun!
