I have just finished an eight-year stint in the Middle East working in both the Data Centre and the ever-important Cyber Security industry. During this time, I was involved in Government level projects with encrypted telephone communications. It was an interesting time when I first started working with Cryptographers, and of course I had a ‘special’ handset that made me feel like I was James Bond! It was a standard looking handset, but only I knew what capabilities it had within its normal looking exterior.
It was an exciting project and generated huge interest which converted into business from several Gulf Interior Ministries, as well as several large Gulf corporations in the Financial sector. Why large corporations I hear you ask – well secret company information that has not been released into the market yet such as planned mergers, acquisitions or the like can be literally worth hundreds of millions of US dollars. If that information can be obtained before the public / company announcement, that is an incredible advantage for the individual, and this scares large companies very much. Not only for the stock value, but you also must consider market share as well as reputation, key clients and an advantage to your competitors.
In business, knowledge is power, and potentially huge sums of money and reputation can be lost if that information can be extracted and exploited through some covert means.
Government agencies were just as keen as to obtain our offerings as the potential effects on can be far reaching and potentially catastrophic and dangerous in terms of National Security from eavesdropping by other countries intelligence services for inside information, as well as dark nefarious forces at work that want to see that country collapse or fail.
It was an excellent product, the only issue was that in order to make a secure encrypted call, it was a pre-requisite that both participants in that call had to have a special handset otherwise it was simply pointless as the call wasn’t encrypted and thus could be easily intercepted.
Add to that the fact that each handset and software cost around $5000 per annum, and if you are a CEO of a large conglomerate or Government with say 25000 employees, of which 500 Executive Management / R&D / Marketing or Ministerial staff required one of these handsets, then you are looking at a significant annual investment. However, due to the potential loss of market and Government information they had no hesitation in purchasing these handsets preloaded with the AES-256 bit encryption software already installed to protect their product, market share as well as their considerable assets.
The point is, businesses in this day and age are desperate to protect these three important criteria. The IoT (Internet of things) and Digitalization as well as the hacking capabilities that are now freely available to purchase in the way of software or services are simply scary – trust me - Working in the Cyber Security industry has taught me that Nothing using the internet as a vehicle for their valuable information and telephone calls using VoiP (Voice over IP) can be considered 100% secure. Even worse, some below par encryption services rely on a third party to utilize their network as well as your local ISP which is the forth party.
It should only take two to Tango, three or four is a very much a crowd here. BlockChain technology has the answer . . .
What is a Disruptive Innovation?

Utilizing BlockChain for Secured Encrypted Business and Social Communications – Real Cyber Security BlockChain is a distributed database that is used to maintain a continuously growling list of records, called Blocks.
Each Block contains a Timestamp and a link to the previous Block. A BlockChain is typically managed by a Peer-to-Peer network collectively adhering to a protocol for validating new blocks. By design, blockchains are inherently resistant to modification of the data.
Once recorded, the data in any given block cannot be altered retroactively without the alteration of all subsequent blocks and the collusion of the network. The ledger itself can also be programmed to trigger transactions automatically’’.

So, what would it take to make an unauthorized modification to a Block? I asked myself this question as I have been pro-actively researching BlockChain technology simply because it’s the most exciting advancement in recent times in terms of communications, transactions and services. Oh, and my interest in Cyber Security of course!
An external attacker would literally have to gain access to every single computer in the private network that hosts the BlockChain database at the same time to manipulate it which is widely regarded as practically impossible.
That’s why Bitcoin is considered so safe and secure as compared to the centralized internet as it uses BlockChain technology for this very reason.
Therefore, I consider the BlockChain as a Disruptive Innovation simply because its already changing the world as we know it.
