Does Steemit Rely Too Much On Google?

in #steemit7 years ago

I'm new here, so forgive me if this has already been answered.  The main reason I joined Steemit was to get away from centralized platforms that can be censored by the #PowersThatBe.  I've noticed that the search functionality is handled by Google.  I'm sure they would index the site anyway, but is it wise to to rely on the #EvilEmpire for such a vital function?  What happens if Google decides Steemit is #FakeNews and stops providing the service?  Is this a temporary solution until an internal search can be written?

I've also seen Steemit stories that are just embedded youtube links.  Again, if Google is actively purging the truth, wouldn't the links eventually disappear?  If the goal is to build something permanent and outside the control grid, should this practice be discouraged?

Lastly, how committed is Steemit to not selling out?  If Google (or similar govt controlled monopoly) decides to buy Steemit, how likely is that to happen?  I'd hate to wake up one morning and find Marissa Mayer is calling the shots.

Does anyone have any thoughts?
