well, I put in $3,000.00 USD or so of my own money since I got back from my trip to Lima, Peru for SteemFiesta in October. So if you are a fool so am I, and it sucks it's now worth half what it was, but I figured it was worth a shot. I've made a bit of money here and was wise enough to pull most of it out last December when things were at a zenith in the apogee. Are we on the way down forever, or will we come back up? I mean I don't have a crystal ball, and it's true, that all markets are down. But damn, sam, i don't see much going on that makes me feel like it's a sure thing. Only time will give us this answer.
SMTs were due in 2018. Not here. Due in first quarter of 2019 now. We failed at hardforking pretty hard and so I'm not thrilled with the chances for the next deployment to be much smoother, when and if it ever comes. In the meantime, other platforms basically already have them or something equivalent enough to them.
Now we all hear about this "destiny" thing, but not hearing much about SMTs anymore. This should alarm anyone. Lack of focus, lack of delivery, and lack of quality, while tuning out user needs and experience, all the while bleeding off our best and brightest?
I won't make a hard and fast prediction, but I'm not going to load up any more of my personal cash till I see if the 3K I just put in ever becomes more than the half of that it's worth now.
I'm not convinced SMTs are as big a deal as they're made out to be. MAYBE they could be used for ICOs - but we know what a scorched landscape that is. And, only a few communities on STEEM are big enough to support the sized economies to make SMTs worthwhile. Those that are big enough can probably marshall enough resource to make an SMT-like thing for themselves until it gets baked into the chain. Don't get me wrong, I reckon the opportunity is there for SMTs - they are a good thing to do. But there's a lot of other maybe better things that could be done too.
I'm actually completely against SMTs to be honest. We have an adoption problem in general in crypto already, so why add 1000 more confusing points of entry that are in disparity and fighting for traction in the markets.
Further, we use STEEM, I'm not even sure why we need SBD and pegging and all, i understand the "why" premise of commerce and usd pegging and all, but shit, can we make it any harder for Aunt Gertrude to use here please? What can we do with SMTs we couldn't do with widespread adoption of a single coin. BTC works pretty well at the places that accept it, they didn't need to make 1000 versions of it.
I made e-stores on shopify that accept steem OR sbd, and not a single made up out of thin air token nobody else uses anywhere else, was harmed in their creation.
sigh
Moot point anyway. Its all talk and no delivery so far, and now we're worrying about "Destiny" and shit, so are SMTs even going to ever appear? I have my doubts.
wow, thanks for the thoughts.... that sounds bleak, and i don't know much, but it still seems there a few worthwhile things happening behind the scenes. even if many things have been botched and development not what it should be, isn't the network steem has developed and proven still worth something itself? ... or is that falling behind the times as well?
peace
It's a solid chain, but it has to keep advancing and things promised this year, didn't materialize. And during that time, many developers who could help improve things, went elsewhere to more open, more genuinely decentralized systems.
Is it over? No. Am I sticking around? Yes, but not quite as tightly as I was, say 18 months ago.

Speaking of adoption problems. Any chance of mailing some occassional packets of 10g PAMP to New Zealand? :)
That depends. Are you willing to pay more for shipping than buying it local? :D
On the scale on my kitchen counter right now...
In the Discord.

Do you have some examples for more open, more genuinely decentralized systems? I would like to explore them too.
That's a bit of a conundrum these days.
