Top 10 annoyances of the SteemIt platform

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

I've been on SteemIt for about 2 weeks now and learned and experienced a lot. The platform has the potential to change the world, but I've also spotted a lot of significant problems! This is my list of annoyances:

1. No alternatives for www.steemit.com

Don't you hate that error 500? There should be at least one backup site (with at least the same functionality and ease of use as steemit.com).

2. The rich are WAY too powerful

Buying popularity or power is the last thing we want in a decentralized environment. If we wanted that, we would go to Facebook or some other place where people have the power to manipulate popularity.

3. New users are WAY too powerless

Not only are they probably completely clueless about cryptocurrencies (blockchain, decentralization, cryptographic keys, security, etc), they also have zero impact. Their votes are worth much less than $0.01, they can't make any curation rewards and are therefore completely reliant on content creation.

4. Plagiarism

The constant identical copies of content is really starting to piss me off, especially when they are coping 1000 lines from other websites! The blockchain doesn't need to contain 50% of the internet, does it? Also things like news, funny or interesting video's are annoying. You already have Reddit to post those. You won't get rich by copying other people's content, ever. People want YOUR content, your thoughts!

5. The voting/curating algorithms

This is an extremely large and difficult topic. I wrote multiple articles about it already:

6. Trending of low quality content

The constant posts of women posting pictures of themselves and a lot of the introductions are making way too much money. I guess it's fine for now, but if it's still the same in 1 month it's probably starting to be problematic.

7. Bots

Don't you hate the constant "Hey, welcome!", "great post!" bots? Luckily i usually see those comments grayed out in no-time, good job curators!

8. No follow feed on steemit.com

How weird (and frustrating) is this? Having a follow button but no (simple) follow feed?

9. People starting group vote sharing tags

Today i literally saw one of them say "i'll upvote your post, regardless of the content". As if the quality isn't low enough already?

10. It's addictive!

I'm afraid this is much, much more addictive than Facebook :)

Sort:

Personalized feeds will be available next week. Bot spam will be culled. The middle class is growing. The website was just open sourced. Plagiarism is being identified and factored in. And we are working on algorithms for punishing those who attempt to harm the platform for personal profit.

I would say that most of your annoyances will be resolved in the coming weeks. Unfortunately, number 10 will only get worse.

Unfortunately, number 10 will only get worse.

lol. So true ..

Lol
Well hopefully everyone realizes that we ARE using the Beta version..
This is "thefacebook.com" version of Facebook, but also like google giving out shares for being the first to get a gmail account :D

Slow down, We are still young! It takes time to improve, but steemit is now open source, that will mean improvement will be much faster!

What is your real name?

What's yours?

Mine is Brad Pitt, what's yours @manman?

@dantheman: Thanks for the reply and the hard work Daniel. What you guys are doing could really change the world!

Personally i think i have the biggest problem with all the reward algorithms. It doesn't make sense to me that 1 person could have the power to up-vote a post by $50 for example, just by being rich and not by being a curator that can be trusted to ONLY up-vote top quality content. The best way to solve that could very well be as simple as just tweaking the voting power algorithm so it decreases MUCH more drastically the first few votes from 100%. Did you see my article SteemIt voting algorithm problems and solutions from a programmer's perspective by any chance?

This was an awesome response. That is all.

he / she is being a brat and venting. Tomorrow be a new day.

It's called constructive criticism, @dantheman can take it no problem. He's used to it. He probably even likes it when people whine about problems, it saves him time testing and writing test reports or whatever.

This. Unfortunately, people don't honor it .. usually :(

Steem is addictive, and I actually explain why here:
https://steemit.com/psychology/@nenad-ristic/why-steem-is-addicitive

It is good to see that @dantheman is active like this in the system. I have put up a couple of posts not exactly complaining but urging some reforms to the interface and to add some features. It is good that someone is getting through. My posts seems to have been invisible. This is okay. I am willing to work the system but some of what you mention is really frustrating. Another thing that seems to be out of control is bots for better or worse.

I mentioned bots ;)

;) So we agree...

wow amazing top 10 annoyances of the steemit platform

Very observant concerning the details.

Keep on doing much of the good work :-)

I've been on here about three days and I'm totally addicted! Everyone in my house is suffering🤗

Your post would've been good if your first point hadn't been wrong.

Interesting, so there is a site similar to steemit.com already? That non-programmers can use?

Hint: it's the highest voted post.

steemstory.com???? That can't be it. I don't know where to look man, haven't looked at many posts today because curating is a goddamn waste of time unless you're a millionaire on this platform.

Already know about that Piston GUI thingy, but like i said there's nothing like steemit.com yet for non-programmers. So it turns out i wasn't wrong :)

Not to be mean but you came of like a brat from high school. I agree with the follow button and I know they are working on it, it's pretty much given. We can't ask for to much at once since its been 4 months since launch. You remember when you couldn't connect with your friends on Facebook cause they didn't belong to a school that was on Facebook? Of course u didn't because you joined when Facebook was 5 years old.

You're right, it's only $300 million. Who cares right? Let's just experiment, because it's fake money. Oh wait, it's real money! Come on dude, they have the responsibility to make it as fair as possible, even in beta. I understand that you can't expect a perfect UI and ease of use and such, but the rewards algorithms HAVE to be absolutely perfect ASAP.

Bots, definitely bots

Bots are just annoying, the reward algorithms are actually problematic. Rich people have way too much impact, poor people too little and people can vote way too much per day at too much power.
