A few weeks back, while browsing through a Flea Market I came across this lunch box.
My first thought was one of indignation, then resentment, then anger. However after a while of just standing and looking at this little lunch box I began to wonder about the mindset of not just the manufacturers but of all those who contributed to the the idea or concept, the artist, the layout, the colours, the printers, packagers, shippers, retailers and of course the purchasers.
I tried to understand or invision their thoughts of this lunch box project.
Did any of them understand exactly what they were producing, even though they attempted to gloss it over by using cartoonish
Characters?
Did they have the slightest inkling of the heartache and sorrow that those who suffered during the times of the residential school system existed?
Or was their only thought about the profit each of these little lunch boxes would bring?

Many will not see or understand, or connect with what is shown in these three small pictures, for they are not aware what took place. Through no fault of their own they are ignorant, they were not taught in our schools. There are still some of our people who remember for they lived through those times.
If I have brought forth bad memories, I am very sorry. ................billytwohearts

Great Lunch Box! PC fooie!

Thanks for replying, I appreciate it. However I have to ask the meaning of "PC fooie"

Politically Correct . Fooie as in non-sense

I've seen such a lunchbox but I have seen the last picture before or one very much like it . I too is sorry if this stirs painful memories :( interesting is it leather or plastic ? thanks for sharing

Thanks for the reply.
It is made of a pressed cardboard, sandwiched between two sheets of a vinyl, then folded into a box form, held in place by riveting. The edges have been heat sealed........billytwohearts

in 1958 hardly anyone was even giving the horrors of the residential school system a second thought. In their minds it was a good thing to force the Indians into learning what the whites wanted them to learn.

Are you in the Bewdley area @billtwohearts? I'm not far away in Northumberland County

shadows pub. Thanks for the reply. No I'm not from that area, I was raised in Midland Ont. my Grandparents were from Bay of Quinty , Deseronto.
