The United Nations has revealed that Morocco is still on the throne of cannabis production in the world. The UNODC annual report confirmed that Morocco ranked first last year with 15 per cent of the global cannabis production, followed by Afghanistan with 13 per cent of world production.
The report said Europe remains the largest market for Moroccan hashish, given the dominance of Moroccan suppliers in a large share of the European market, adding that new suppliers from Afghanistan and India have been competing with Moroccan suppliers for this important market.
The report said that the Moroccan government has made great efforts in recent years to reduce the area cultivated with cannabis, considering that Morocco's production of hashish per hectare compared to Afghanistan, where production reaches 128 kg per hectare compared to 48 kg per hectare for Morocco.
The report said that Spain was at the forefront of countries fighting the smuggling of cannabis, with 384,315 kg of 34 per cent worldwide, followed by Morocco with 10 per cent of the global hashish (weed) by confiscating 118,633 kg of hashish.
