How is the search system any good if it uses AskSteem, which shows only posts that are at least a few months old?

That's a sorting issue, the Ask Steem integration I believe is only temporary until they have their own search.
AskSteem is powerful but it's not great at SORTING and showing the info we implimented it just as a stop gap. The real power in search is not in FINDING stuff (which asksteem does well) it's in the decisions that put certain results before another.
That we have not worked on yet. That's some algorithm type stuff right there. haha
However maybe for the time being we can just default to NEWEST perhaps.
