To become popular with the non-crypto mainstream crowd steemit needs to have a more user-friendly ui and offer the same features and functions as the big social media sites. And have the voting system changed, so that its about content and covering many topics and not just a popularity contest or whales just upvoting well-written recruitment posts, steemit hyping posts and the travel-blogs of pretty girls in bikinis!
