Steemit: @ned takes back 3 million Steem Power from 6 users...

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

...but @surpassinggoogle keeps his additional power...

Some thoughts as to why this was granted in the first place, and recently removed.

title.png

Background

Yesterday, @ned took back 3 million Steem Power, 500,000 from @linuslee0216, @htliao, @tumutanzi, @nicolemoker, @ramengirl, and @sweetsssj.

Was this just the end of an experiment that began on the 8th August, or are there other reasons behind this decision?

I would really like to put forward a few questions at Steemfest to @ned regarding this.

Previously, I wrote a blog titled Meet Steemit's first Community Owners and Administrators in which I speculated that the delegation of this Steem Power to 7 users was the beginning of an experiment in Communities - The 7 delegatees being potential community leaders, or representatives.

My thoughts at the time behind the reasoning for this delegation included:

  • These users excel in particular communities that Steemit (@ned) sees as strong growth areas

  • They have been entrusted with Steem Power to grow their communities (and thus the platform)

  • These users either live in, or have a language native to a strong growth area, plus a good level of English

  • I think this is the beginning of communities on Steemit, whilst we wait for the interface to appear. @ned is clear on where he see's potential for the most growth, and has seemingly put his money on it being Asia.

The test is over?

So with the undelegation of this huge amount of Steem Power, some questions spring to mind.

1.PNG

Was this a test, and how did @ned feel it went?

Were the users entrusted with this huge amount of Steem Power putting it to the 'right' use?

And perhaps the biggest question of all, why not undelegate from all 7 'trialists'?

And the 'winner' is?....

surpassinggoogle.PNG

Initially, 7 users were given this Steem Power boost. However, one user, who many will know as 'yer boy Terry' and has the handle @surpassinggoogle, still owns 500,000 delegated SP from @ned.

Personally, he is the user from the 7 that I have interacted the most with (although @htliao and @tumutanzi have kindly supported my curation blogs). You will see @surpassinggoogle supporting many initiatives across Steemit including the likes of @steemgigs and his hugely popular 'Untalented' tag in which many users have submitted 'Who am I' style blogs under said tag.

These ventures, and additional personal touch that Terry provides here on Steemit, could be why he has kept the Steem Power entrusted by @ned. I am, and i suspect many others are too, really happy to see this as I have seen the encouragement he gives across the platform. This is summarized nicely using this chart from steemreports.com:

googlevotes.png

And here we have the vote distribution for all 7:

Data is king.

Over to you

So friends, what do you think about:

  • @ned's initial decision to delegate 3.5 million Steem Power to 7 users

  • The reasoning to take it back now

  • Why you think @surpassinggoogle still holds 500,000 of @ned's SP (I hope he's not just forgotten and removes it today!)

As usual, more questions than answers, but what an interesting topic!

Thanks for reading today

Asher

Whatever @ned reasons are, i think, in the course of delegation period, not only it was an experiment by ned, it also an experiment of handling self-restrain . You know what people would say before and would do after they would get money. Im not saying bad things . But in this experiment, who truly a leader was really showing, so I hope this is what ned hoping for.

Meanwhile, popularity does not mean you are a leader, it just means that you are popular.

What we can take from this lesson are, that ned value who can contribute more to steemit and for the longetivity of this platform thus trusting 7people to manage huge steem power.

Hey there!

Hi!

Any more to add today? :)

Because among all who have been delegated, @surpassinggoogle did the unconditional way of giving back to the community. More of it, he spent so much time curating posts from the #philippines tag. Its undisputable that Philippines' making a good wave of traffic on steemit and promotion is exponentially growing! 😎😎😎

Edit: This is a good post for throwing speculations to why did @ned undo the delegation.

Yes he did, and will continue doing an excellent job, not just for the #philippines tag i am sure!

Thanks for your comments :)

Yes, that's steemit is about-empower others

I believe I was the only person in the Philippines that didn't get a help from him LOL

On another note, @ned, if you decide to do that again, I nominate the humble @reko. Check out what he's doing 😎

Thank you for the nomination @enginewitty, @jonsnow1983! I won't disappoint, working 24/7 building up momentum and promoting the Steem blockchain! Massive action is imminent! 👍😀

Sverige_reko

You're the only person I know showing proof of bringing new members to the platform over there in Sweden. I think it's awesome.

I second this @reko @enginewitty

You assume he checks my blogs 😂

I'll ask him next week what the plan is 😁

ahahah that gave me a good laugh! :)

Me too! I'm just sat here waiting for @ned to drop a $100 on my blog 😁

hehehee! still waiting! Maybe he will delegate you power next! :)

I think he should - I'll ask him next week!

hahah put in a good word for me :P

Lol right on, keep me posted 😉

Since I am relatively new to steemit I wonder if he delegated to them for being active Steemians. Who would not want to be delegated with such. I don't know why he took it back but it is his choice. I don't know why he delegated it but it was also a good choice. @surpassinggoogle has used his votes the most so...

Great post man!! It would be interesting to see how many self votes the other delegates made. With that being said @surpassinggoogle clearly voted much more than the rest so if that is the main reason, gg :):) For now, it's pure speculation however interesting none the less. Cheers!

Here are the self-vote details for each of the seven. Read these figures however you fancy 😊

@ramengirl15112.0%#1

Another factor to look at is how much voting there was between the seven. Here are the steemreports links if anyone wants to explore that further :

Nice!! Thanks for the extra effort. Much appreciated :):)

Thanks!

You can check who's doing what on Steemreports.com - self votes and spread of votes.

With 500,000 SP, you can vote at 5% and really boost a minnow, plenty to go round.

Have a good day, cheers!

Awesome, thanks!! I'll definitely go and have a squiz.

Yeah, I had a look and to me at least, it appears as if @surpassinggoogle was the most selfless in the exercise. Some individuals selling votes with @ned's delegated SP not only seems wrong but very unwise as well. Thanks for the post link :):) Cheers!!

Good article (not voted yet)
My guess is Ned took that back one week before SteemFest, probably part of the reason being the fest use.

oooh, do you think he's sharing it out between us? YAY!!!! :D

Thank for your comments Joy, see you next week!

Sharing out between us sounds like a good dream.
I think that was just an experiment, I checked http://www.steemreports.com/outgoing-votes-info for the outgoing votes charts, I have to say @surpassinggoogle is doing a great job.

I do think it's actually hard to keep outgoing votes spread out like this, which needs putting a lot of time and energy. I don't think those 6 's charts look that bad neither. Of course myself was the beneficiary of Ned's delegation, honestly.

Look forward to discuss more with you guys in SteemFest.

Hi again Joy

Thanks for the reminder to check Steemreports, i have updated the post a little.

I'm not surprised with regards to the charts I see.

Yes, we can discuss this interesting topic more next week :)

Out of the lot, it really does seem that @surpassingoogle was the one who was making more on n impact on Steemit than the rest, I can't speak for all of them, but @surpassinggoogle, as you mentioned in your post itself did, in fact, seem to bring the most value in supporting and educating of minnows and aid the overall growth of Steemit and it's user base.

It'll be interesting to see where the @ned's SP will go after this.

My vote is for @curie to get come of that SP, the work they are doing is immense.

God Speed Brethren.

I side with your comments, although it is difficult to know exactly how much the others were doing for their communities as many blogs were in Chinese or Korean.

Personally, I'd like to see some delegation going to @stephenkendal and his #promo-uk team. There are also other groups of folks in other parts of the world doing similar work and it would be great for these people to support the new members they bring on board.

Thanks for your comments!

Asher

Very interesting thought indeed. The others are considered as leaders within their "communities" and maybe the time has passed for these communities to go it alone! Maybe the Asian community has grown to such an extent that they no longer need the additional SP now.

Hello marcusxman!
Two comments, please.
When you look at the size of Asia isn't the notion of "Asian community" bringing too much diversity under the same umbrella? Shouldn't we be focused on identifying different communities of interest within Asia, as we should in N. America and Europe?

I may be totally off base the following remark; but here goes. What the news that this post brings to me is a helpful hypothesis to account for some very odd payouts and I have seen.

For example, a certain YouTube giant arrived here and his first post (concentrated mostly on introducing himself, and offering little 'green' content outside of that info.) he got 'paid' SBD$15,000 ! He was so excited about this and he broadcasted it to the world, while neither he nor the persons responsible for payment seemed to have realized what the implications would be for struggling authors producing valuable 'green' content after much effort.

My hypothesis is that this impact on the struggling authors is totally unimportant; because while the mantra is "come to Steemit and get paid for your content" the important unstated message is "come to Steemit and and bring along your horde of Followers and you will be handsomely paid"!

I do not see any problems with this situation, sitting in the seat of the CEO of Steem Inc. for a moment; but it is clear that we struggling authors need to wake up and 'smell the tea leaves'.

This is no critique, please; because I am coming from a writing community people ar accustomed to getting 'peanuts' for doing great work. The only sad piece here is that in the design of the Steamit software and the management of the social network that is the Steemit community (by the whales) they seem not have a clue on how to appeal to us - or perhaps that's totally unimportant for them.

Hi @lestatisticien I totally agree with you on this. YouTubers are here just to make money and not here to write or curate. They post on YouTube and link it here to make more money. As to the odd payments seem like nothing we can do at the moment. The system is still not yet democratic enough, Why not put changes to the vote where everyone is equal not according to SP etc...
We joined Steemit based on current terms and conditions, so unfortunately we either stick with it or go do something else.

Maybe the Asian community has grown to such an extent that they no longer need the additional SP now.

Yes you could well be right here.

Thanks very much for the comments :)

Asher

Hi, I was not even aware that the delegations were from @ned. I always thought they paid for the leases from some bots like @minnowbooster etc. It makes sense to me now. I support your theory that @surpassinggoogle has been very active in growing and supporting minnows, I can attest to that. My opinion might be biased because of that, however, I think he has been doing a tremendous job. I hope he will get to keep the delegation forever. He is truelly an inspiration to many. I can't say much about the other delegatees, I never had any interaction with any of them, they seem to be hard to reach... anyways this is a great post. Keep us updated with your findings.

I could not agree more!

Thank you for your comments :)

Asher

It is obvious that @surpassinggoogle has been using the power as it should be, that is helping communities grow and not sharing the wealth among friends like many others did! It is very easy to understand mate, the blockchain records everything!!!

That's right my friend, it sure does!

Terry has been a Star for Steemit over the past year, and long may it continue!

Cheers!

Asher

some of my friends were sick of being asked by one in particular to give more money to her account which was already delegated tons, always on trending...etc.... she was asking for even more money to get her vote

some of my friends were sick of being asked by one in particular to give more money to her account which was already delegated tons, always on trending...etc.... she was asking for even more money to get her vote

That's interesting to hear.

I hope my blog doesn't cast negative dispersions on the 6, but the comments today have certainly given food for thought.

Thanks for your vote and comments, intriguing to see what Ned does next.

Hi @abh12345,
Thanks for the informative post. I got few votes from @tumutanzi and I was extremely surprised when I saw his last vote. Now it makes a lot of sense.

He was great help as far as I know, but being new on steemit and utterly technology-challenged, I have no idea of all the stuff going on. Just read around here and there some news or rumors.

In regard to what @battleaxe said and I also mentioned in my latest rant about steemit (Someone is selling their vote), you may want to check this post
I stumbled on this post being resteemed by @randowhale. Although the writer has a negative reputation score, it seems that what he was saying may have some truth in it.

It is sad to see how people change when it comes to money!

Thanks again :)

Thanks for the link :)

Good old Bernie, and here's me trying to be tactful :)

@paulag puts more numbers on it in her recently blog. Shameful really, @surpassinggoogle understood what the delegates SP was for, the rest just money grabbed.

Have a good weekend!

Thanks for the suggestion @abh12345,
I loved @paulag post. Lots of data indeed.

Thanks again and have a great weekend :)

My pleasure, you too! :)

wtf, so it posts 3 times!, lmfao

wtf, so it posts 3 times!, lmfao

I think among the 7 users that were given that huge steempower, only @surpassinggoogle did what @ned is expecting them to do.

@surpassinggoogle is always supporting the minnows and he even have initiated a tag like "untalented" in order for the minnows to be more active and inspired in using this steemit platform. He is the model steemian in the phillipines and a motivator for his followers.

He just deserve to retain that previlege of having that huge steem power. Thumbs up @ned and @surpassinggoogle.

Please help us the minnows to grow and make the steemit platform the best among the rest! 😄

I happen to agree 👍🏾

I agree, @surpassinggoogle is the best interacting and supporting minnows, @htliao probably second... a lot of the others I have muted... the whole "look at me, I'm at a cool resort or restaurant and my post gets $100+ upvotes" gets old pretty quick. Although I support and am intrigued by the global growth concept, it seems that the delegated funds were not "trickling down" to curating newbies and such. Actually, there needs to be more upvoting automatically of newbies, not sure how to implement that.

Amen to that.

Bloody hell! I was going to put a detailed hypothesis as to why I think this has happened, however I think you have hit the nail on the head here.

I think you're right, it was an experiment to see how it went and now for whatever reason the experiment is over.

I'm not sure about the others, but I reckon @sweetsssj has really boosted the Chinese community and maybe Ned feels that it can stand on its own two feet now?

Or maybe he just needs some spare cash for whatever project and he will power down. Though I think the experiment hypothesis is the strongest one.

Really nice post; thanks for the info! :-)

Cg

Cheers man! Sorry for stealing your thunder, that's happened to me a few times now!

You should write a post anyway, feel free to cite me if needed! :D

Hopefully he has other plans for the SP and has learned from this 'experiment'.

It would be great to hear his thoughts on it at Steemfest - I'll be sure to report anything back.

Thanks for the kind comments.

Asher

No, it's totally fine! I didn't mean I was going to write a post, I meant I was going to give you a detailed answer in your comment section, however you pretty much nailed it as far as I can tell :-)

Wish I was going to Steemfest with you man, I just can't afford it basically, so yeah, any reports will be greatly appreciated!

Cg

Please let @surpassinggoogle not be relieved of the steem power. He should be even given more because that guy has been a huge blessing to the community.

I fully support your comments!

Have a great day :)

Maybe the main reason why @surpassinggoogle is not being undelegated for he is so kind helping smaller community to this platform, as far as i know sir terry is holding many small community like nigerian and our country philippines.I think he deserved to have that delegation.

Anyway thank you for sharing this ash, I didn't know this, lol well another question have been amswered with this post while i'm in the edge of exploring more about this kinda platform.

Yes I agree, Terry's work is there for all to see!

Thanks for your comments @keshawn

Asher

I don't believe in speculating and wild guess work. Waiting for your report from Steemfest where you must be asking this to @ned directly 😊

Do you hold 'Steem'? In that case you must be speculating that the price will rise? :)

I will try to find out some answers to this puzzle at Steemfest and report back.

Thanks for your comments!

Maybe he found some new folks who need a chance:))

Like us? Imma ask him at Steemfest if kid4life can get some 😁

Maybe us yeah:)) Okay mahh man do that! Nice to see your going to Steemfest, I will have to wait until next one! HAVE A BLAST!

Cheers bro! I will try to listen in to all that is happening, see if i can pick up some nice info!

If he's anything like me, he's got multiple reasons for doing a thing. I imagine it had to with growth and see who would make best use of it. Stats speak loud enough. 😋

Surprisingly, @surpassinggoogle understood what's the real steemit community without any technical behind it. He participates and returns the favor back to the community. Congrats !

Yep, Terry is the man - we have technical people, what we need more of is people that understand community development and come with best intentions.

There is nothing to compare. If @sweetsssj trade her votes, @surpassinggoogle inspires and unites all Steemit community. He is open to communication, he runs various contests to make people more active and sees the potential in each of us.
He gives the community more than he wants to take back, is not it?

You can come to your own conclusions but I do understand, based on the numbers and data available, what you are saying.

Thanks for your comments!

I didnt even know that he delegated it to them. But i suspected there were group of curators curating peoples post. But what i notice from this curators was that they were not really fair in their curation. You see them curating a post of somebody who has connections that joined yesterday and whose content is notvreally high quality and leaving others who have been here since with better quality contents. Maybe this is one of the reasons why @ned took back his steem power from them.

If @ned wants to delegate some of his steem power again, he should delegate some to me because i will really use it to serve people down there at the bottom, which i think is important in this platform.

@surpassinggoogle deserve whatever he has now. He's real helpful to the minnows

very interesting post.. I'm sure this type of thing will never affect me lol

I am really glad that surpassinggoolge was able to keep his delegated steem power. Whole steemit communities were inspired by him. But just in case ned decides to take it back I think a lot of people will be glad to help him regain some of his steem power. Personally I am willing to give him back what he shared with me when he upvoted my posts and probably even more. He is such a awesome guy and it shows in his actions.

useful post... i upvoted you
