I would not go as far as saying it can "prevent it" I would say it can "slow down the natural process of bone degeneration." This happens primarily due to the "if you don't use it you lose it theory" to explain it plainly. If you add regular stress to your bones and joints (i.e. working out with resistance/weights), that stress can cause the bone to stay stronger for longer. A simple concept in layman's terms.
