I use a step down (buck) converter to step down my 12V battery bank to 5V and power all of my Raspberry Pi computers from that. The good thing about a buck is the input can vary (ie.11.8-14.5) during charge cycle of 12V AGM or lead acid.

Remember that USB cheap USB cables can have a lot of voltage drop.
