If you're like me, you have a very limited knowledge of After Effects. Not only is it cumbersome, but none of it is real time last I checked. So, if I ever have to do a visual effect, I try to do it in Premiere because it's all real time, so it's much faster.
I hate doing VFX so much that if I can, I'll write them out of any story I'm trying to write and produce. VFX is best handled with money and a team of real artists as opposed to my hack-jobbery.

I've been umming and aaahing about after effects since I started doing video work. I've found everything I need so far in premier, I don't even have after effects, I really want it for making things like denoising easier and little bits like that which premier is a ballache for. But i can't really justify paying for it, I'll hardly ever use it. It seems way too complex. I had a trial once and made a visualizer, it took like 8 hours to render/export, then I had to import it into premier and add tweaks which took a further 12 hours (bloody windows).
I am quite effects heavy so after effects should be my thing really, but you can do a lot more than people think in premier.
I haven't tried this particular technique before, but it interests me. How did you get the picture to move with the video? Was it ust the standard long, keyframing malarky or is there a trick I'm missing out here?
This is how I feel about AE. It's so deep, but the interface and non-real time manner of it makes usage frustrating and daunting.
I just used standard key framing in the motion panel, adjusting scale and position to match the scaling applied by the digital zoom. Nothing fancy.
I think what lots of people don't understand is AE is for motion graphics. It really isn't essential for all video editors or videographers to know the ins and outs of it, or even use it at all. It's such a complex bit of software...
