A summary of God's care
"These are the words of the covenant that Jehovah commanded Moses to celebrate with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant he made with them in Horeb."
The covenant that God made with them in Horeb consisted of the Ten Commandments. We know them as the Mosaic law. The covenant that God was going to make with them here, had a relationship with the land, and it is called the Palestinian Covenant. God made this covenant with them shortly before they entered the earth.
"And Moses called all Israel, and said unto them, Ye have seen all that the LORD hath done before your eyes in the land of Egypt unto Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land."
These Israelites were children and adolescents when they witnessed some of these incidents. The elderly in the nation will have been sixty years old, after traveling through the desert. Only Joshua and Caleb remained of the old generation.
"the great trials that your eyes saw, the signs and great wonders, but to this day Jehovah has not given you a heart to understand, nor eyes to see, nor ears to hear."
In spite of seeing all these signs, they still did not perceive the scope of God's portentous intervention in their history. Isaiah said the same, and we see that the apostle Paul in Romans 11: 8 made mention once again of the blindness of Israel. The apostle Paul said: "As it is written, God gave them an unfeeling spirit, eyes that see not, and ears that do not hear, to this day."
Does this mean that God did not allow them to understand, that they closed their eyes and ears? No. It means that they already had them closed. Until God opens the eyes and ears of men and women, they can not hear the gospel. Now, we want this to be clear, Yes you can hear the Word of God, but you can not hear the gospel with understanding.
