One biblical phrase that has troubled many people is the command to fear God. What does fear of the Lord mean, and why does God ask us to fear Him ?
The fear of God is knowing the mighty power of God and his glory or to fear, to respect and to have to reverence for the lord and it is a positive quality.
This fear acknowledges God’s good intentions and it is produced by reading God’s Word regularly. Fear of God makes a person receptive to wisdom and knowledge (Prov. 1:7; 9).A healthy fear of God includes the fear of the consequences of disobedience. There may be times of temptation or trial when we may forget some of the better reasons for obeying God, and that is when we had better think of the consequences (Exodus 20:20).
This is what Hebrews 10:26-31 tells us: “For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
“Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has undermined the son of God, thee blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified and insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord. And again, ‘The LORD will judge His people.’ It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”
Fearing God is good because it saves us from caving into our own sinful nature. That's why hearing someone is God-fearing actually makes us trust that person more. If they fear God, they are more likely to keep their word and treat others with kindness.
What shows that you fear God
- Hate sin
Sin creates a wide distance between Man and God. Sin is seen as an intangible entity whose movements we cannot literally see. But, as sin uses the members of our body in exercising its dominion but we can recognize it at work.
proverbs 8:13 says to honour the lord is to hate evil .God hates pride ,arrogance ,evil ways and false words
It is obvious that the obedience comes with fear.
2.Respect God's servants
The anointing that the servants have is given by God to empower His people carry out His task. This shows that the great power is from God not us .So many people are in church just to see the faults preachers do ,some are backbiters but that is not what God wants .He wants us to respect his chosen people
3.Respect God's house
People have lost respect for the church Men and women dress the way they want ,People come to church to show off with their monies but let me pose a question " when you come with chewing gum or a bottle of water when your done using them in church ,Where do you throw them? Am not answering that but let's check ourselves .Respecting God's house involves respecting everything in it be it the chairs ,the floor and the people in it .
what are the benefits of fearing God .
- It adds length to life
- It teaches a person wisdom
- We are able to avoid evil
- Fearing God brings life
- when we fear God we ascertain wealth, honour and life
conclusion
The Lord confides in those who fear Him; He makes His covenant known to them. If you have lost the spirit of fear of the lord pray onto him and ask for it .He is merciful he will grant it back
