Hebrews 3:1-6
The book of Hebrews demonstrates the superiority of Jesus Christ over everything and everyone in any generation. This chapter presents Jesus Christ and His sufficiency and superiority in the life of a Christian. He is superior to all angels and all prophets put together. Jesus is the Apostle sent from God, whom Christians should listen to in all things. He is our high priest who brings us to God, the Father, through His death. He is also Ruler of the Father's house.
THE MINISTRY OF CHRIST, OUR REDEEMER
Hebrews 3:1-3; 1 Thessalonians 5: 27, 28; Ephesians 5:25-27; John 3:31-36; Hebrews 7: 24-28; 1:1-3; 1 Corinthians 4: 1,2
"Wherefore, holy bethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus" (verse 1). The epistle was written to holy bethren and those who are partakers of God's call into His kingdom.
The Scripture says, "who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one"(Job 14:4). The only way a sinning boy or girl can be clean and be part of the holy bethren in Christ is through repentance and faith in the blood of Jesus Christ, our Redeemer. When one is washed through His blood, such a person is cleansed outwardly and inwardly from dirt and defilement. It is important to know that this call to salvation is a heavenly calling, a holy calling, and a high calling. May the Lord open our understand to know the hope of His calling in our lives.
Before the writer introduced us to the ministry of Christ, he first call us to consider or meditate on Him. This will enable us to know Him more. The more we know Him, the more we grow in the likeness of Him. Those who take time to consinder or meditate on Christ will always think of heavenly things. This thought is brilliantly pointed by a song writer:
"Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace".
The ministry of Christ, our Redeemer is clearly pointed from the above passage. One, He is an Apostle of God. An Apostle is a "sent one" (John 5:30). He has the word of God and we must listen to all He says (John 2:5). Two, He is the High Priest. As the High Priest, He prays to God on our behalf (Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25). He also preaches to us the word of the Almighty God that bring life eternal (John 3:34-36).
Jesus Christ was faithful to God in all things. He fulfilled His ministry. Therefore, He deserves honour by angels and men. However, we must not equate Moses with Jesus. Jesus Christ is high above Moses in every respect. One, Christ is the Builder of the Church while Moses was only a stone in it (Hebrews 1:3). Two, Jesus is the Founder of the Church (spiritual house) by virtue of His divine sonship while Moses was just a minister. Three, Jesus is the word personified while Moses was only an instrument to receive the word from God. Four, Jesus is the Apostle and High Priest of our faith and He is the Lord of all angels. On the other hand, Moses was only an instrument that God used to bring Israel out of bondage from Egypt. Moses was a prophet with God's revelation only for a shadow of Christ, the reality. Jesus Christ is by far greater than Moses, angels and all the other prophets. Hence, we are to worship Christ only.
THE FAITHFULNESS OF MOSES, THE LAW RECEIVER.
Hebrews 3:2,4,5; Ephesians 2:10, 19-22; 1 Corinthians 3:9; 4:1,2; Acts 20: 32
"Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house" (verse 2). Moses was a faithful servant in God's service. God Himself testified of this: "My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house" (Numbers 12:7). The Scriptures also confirmed that he did all things as God commanded him (Exodus 38:22; 39,42; 40:23).
As Christians youths, we are called by God who created and saved us to be faithful in His service. Though Moses was faithful, our calling to be faithful must be like that of Jesus. He is our perfect Example.
God is the Builder and Founder of His own house. Christ, His Son, who is associated with Him,is appointed Lord over His Father's house. Jesus and His Father are one. He is also the Founder of the house. In God's wisdom and power, He builds individuals' lives, families, Church and the nation.
CONDITIONS FOR OUR STEADFASTNESS TO THE END.
"But Christ as a son over his own house; whose are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end" (verse 6). Christ, as the Son of God, is the One over the house of God. The Scripture says we are the house of God. "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If anyman defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are" (1 Corinthians 3: 16,17)
The Lord expects His temple to be clean and holy always. Therefore, we are to be clean outwardly and inwardly through the blood of Jesus christ. Anything we put on that will not make Him happy should be put off.
Receiving Christ at the point of repentance and believing in Him is wonderful; but abiding in Him until we see Him in heaven is the most important. Therefore, we must hold fast our confidence untill the end. You must not allow temptation, persecution, trial or any other thing to seperate you from Him. Your decision and determination should be that of living and holding firm to Christ to the end.
Salvation in Christ Jesus has a hope of glory in God. In Christ, there is hope of salvation (1 Thessalonians 5:8), hope of righteousness (Galatians 5:5), hope of the gospel (Colossians 1:23), etc. It is therefore necessary we keep this hope alive.
Jesus is not an apostle. Jesus is God.
(Hebrews 1:1-3 NIV) In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, {2} but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. {3} The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
(Isaiah 9:6 NIV) For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
(John 14:8-11 NIV) Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us." {9} Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? {10} Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. {11} Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves.
(John 17:4-5 NIV) I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. {5} And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.
It is not my intention to reduce Jesus to the office of an apostle. Apostle in the context used is the literal meaning and the reference drawn from the verse.
