Power and Authority

There are several kinds of prayer. There are prayers of thanksgiving, supplication, intercession etc., but here I want to talk about the Prayer of Authority. Our words have power if there is some  authority structure behind them. For example; a police officer has more authority, when he speaks in the line of his duty, than the average citizen does. Why is this? Because he has a legal structure to  back up his words. When he gets outside of the authority granted to him by this structure, he has no more authority than anyone else. A good policeman knows what authority he has and where his jurisdiction ends.

God has no limits on His authority except those imposed by His own nature. For example; God can not lie because He is truth and no lie can be found in Him. Because God is righteous, He can not use His authority for evil. We find some examples of God's authority in the story of creation. Genesis 1:3, Then God said,

"Let there be light";

and there was light. Since God has authority over light and darkness, the light obeyed His command. (Genesis 1: 9-10) Then God said,

"I command the water under the sky to come together in one place, so there will be dry ground" And that's what happened. God named the dry ground "Land" and he named the water "Ocean". God looked at what he had done and saw that it was good".

Here again we see God exercising His authority over the elements. He simply speaks and the elements obey Him. In chapters 1 & 2 of Genesis, we see God giving certain authority and responsibilities to man. Then God said,

"Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth....And God created man in His own image... male and female He created them. And God blessed them; and God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth."

Then God said,

"Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you;" Then the Lord God took man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, "From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you shall surely die."

So it was that God gave provisions, responsibilities, authorities, and restrictions to man. As long as man was content to live within the structure that God laid out for him, everything was all right.

Let us now jump ahead and examine the authority of Jesus, the way He used it and how He imparted it to His disciples. The fact that Jesus had authority did not escape the religious leaders. (Matthew 21:23-27)

"Jesus had gone into the temple and was teaching when the chief priests and the leaders of the people came up to him. They asked, "What right do you have to do these things? Who gave you you this authority? Jesus answered "I have just one question to ask you, if you answer it, I will tell you where I got the right to do these things. Who gave John the right to baptize? Was it God in heaven or merely some human being?" They thought it over and said to each other, "We can't say that God gave John this right. Jesus will ask us why we didn't believe John. On the other hand, these people think that John was a prophet, and we are afraid of what they might do to us. That's why we can't say that it was merely some human who gave John the right to baptize." So  they told Jesus, "We don't know." Jesus said, "Then I won't tell you who gave me the right to do what I do".

The leaders had a legitimate question. They were charged with maintaining order and safeguarding the accuracy of teaching concerning God and His laws; but they were not going to accept Christ's answer any more than they would the answer concerning John the Baptist. Since all authority ultimately resides in God, there is no authority apart from the permission of God. In (Luke 10:22) Jesus said,

"All things have been handed over to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him."

It is obvious that Jesus received His authority from the Father as part of the "All things" which were handed over to Him. When there is a power structure, there is always a chain of command and there are rules that control that power structure. Except for God, Who is at the top of the power structure and Who invented it, every participant is accountable to work within that structure and to do so according to the rules.

There need be no rules for God because He is perfect, just, omniscient, righteous, and He is governed by His perfect nature. We do business differently with those over whom we have control, than we do with those who have control over us. We can command those over whom we have control and we suggest and make requests of those who have control over us. We must always remember that our authority rests in the structure that has granted us that authority and that we have absolutely no authority of our own. We must always come in the name,(authority), of someone else who has authority over us and to whom we are accountable.

Jesus had authority over inanimate forces and objects. We are going to examine these here and see just how He exercised His authority. We will start with the account of the fig tree in (Matthew 21:18-19)

" Now in the morning, when He returned to the city, He became hungry. And seeing a lone fig tree by the road, He came to it, and found nothing on it except leaves only; and He said to it,' No longer shall there ever be any fruit from you.' And at once the fig tree withered." Notice that Jesus did not pray; "Father make this tree wither and die because it has no figs on it.".

He spoke directly to the tree because He had authority over the tree and He said; "No longer shall there ever be any fruit from you." Because He had authority over the tree, the tree had to respond according to His words. There is another example of this principle in (Mark 4:37-39 ) "

And there arose a fierce gale of wind, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling up. And He Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they awoke Him and said to Him, ' Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing? ' And being aroused, He rebuked the wind and the sea, 'Hush, be still.' And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm." In this case Jesus spoke to the wind and sea and just said to them, "Hush, be still."and, because He had authority over them, they had no choice but to obey Him.

So if our Lord Jesus could have authority, we also have authority over all principalities and power, so let's pray with authority, believe and have faith.

THIS IS WHERE I DRAW THE CURTAIN CLOSE FOR TODAY'S LESSON, I HOPE YOU HAVE BEEN BLESSED BY THIS WONDERFUL PIECE, TILL WE MEET AGAIN, REMAIN BLESSED!!!

Thanks for sharing with us @STEEMCHURCH on the need to pray with authority and power as a Christian.

  • Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

    • But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you.

    • And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths.

  • He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.

The devil wants many Christians to live in ignorance so as to gain advantage over them always. Jesus said to us: Whatever we bind on this earth shall be bound in heaven and whatever we loose on this earth shall be loosed in heaven. If we don't know the kind of power and authority Christ has given us we will always lose our battles. Thanks for sharing with us this message.

Thank you very much for this teaching! We gain authority when we obey God and act in the name of Jesus!

thanks for sharing your thoughts @milagros

Indeed its noteworthy and essential that as believers we must pray with authority and power on a daily basis because the challenges in this world is overwhelming but because we are believers in Christ, we would always be victorious

It's unfortunate that some believers don't even know the kind of power and authority they possess being in christ Jesus.

The compelling supplication of the honest can in particular, we have power and expert in Christ Jesus who won on the cross of Calvary to give us the specialist that was taken away in view of wrongdoing, great sibling, a debt of gratitude is in order for sharing God remunerate their exertion and devotion. God favor you

And God favor you too @moize

Without a doubt its important and basic that as adherents we should implore with expert and power consistently in light of the fact that the difficulties in this world is overpowering but since we are devotees to Christ, we would dependably be triumphant

God’s love motivates Him to use His power. First John 4:16 says, “And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us....” When you believe the love He has for you, you’ll begin to realize you have as much right to use the Name of Jesus as anyone else. Believe the love God has for you. Once you recognize the reality of God’s love in your life, you will realize He has not left you defenseless and powerless against evil. When you pray, use it freely and confidently in the face of your enemy!

Yes, GOD Almighty has given all authority to us to refund as kings in earth.
But, it's unfortunate that some Christians still live in bondage, believing suffering is GOD's way of humbling us or poverty is a sign of holiness.

Really @adedoyinwealth am still surprise myself, it pains me when I see Children of God not utilizing the power our father has given to us

We all need to come to the light and see His power and authority bestowed upon us.

As Christians, we have to learn to pray with authority of the Lord!!!

Prayer is the key that uphold all things and it is that which will always connect us to the living God..prayer is everything and it is the ultimate.
His power has always be manifested upon those who trust and worship him in truth and in spirit and ready to give him all the honour.
You don't have to be very busy chasing what is on the earth and leave the things of the father who is the living God.
You will not serve God without giving God your precious time and sacrifice.
Things may seems so hard and not going the way you planned it but always remember that the lord loves you as his child every time and always care about you any time you come to him in prayer
Give your self a real definition and what you want people to think if you.
It is our prayer for Christ to be with us in All we do and when will dwell in his presence .
death has brought us joy peace .
We should have the courage to glorify him and worship him in truth and in spirit always

Wow thanks a lot @izuchukwu1506 for this comment, am indeed blessed with this, my best line is when you said "Prayer is everything and it is the ultimate" Thanks again

God has given authority over the earth to mankind. Despite man stuffing things up, God keeps his word, so he will not act on earth without getting permission from a human with legitimate authority on earth. This is an important principle.
God will not act on earth
unless a human gives him permission to act.
Jesus has defeated the enemy and given God's people authority on earth. When we pray we are not asking him to change his mind, we are giving him the authority that he needs to take action on earth.

Thanks @ladywayne1 for sharing your thoughts

I really like this :

if our Lord Jesus could have authority, we also have authority over all principalities and power,

Thanks

As true believers, we have to pray with authority and power.
For God has given us authority over everything.

You're taking the verse out of context. Jesus didn't give believers power to trample snakes and scorpions. We haven't been given power or authority from Jesus. That was given to his 72 disciples. Here's the entire passage:

(Luke 10:1-20 NIV) After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. {2} He told them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. {3} Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. {4} Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road. {5} "When you enter a house, first say, 'Peace to this house.' {6} If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; if not, it will return to you. {7} Stay in that house, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house. {8} "When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is set before you. {9} Heal the sick who are there and tell them, 'The kingdom of God is near you.' {10} But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, {11} 'Even the dust of your town that sticks to our feet we wipe off against you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God is near.' {12} I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town. {13} "Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. {14} But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. {15} And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths. {16} "He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me." {17} The seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name." {18} He replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. {19} I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. {20} However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."

If someone asks me to pray in agreement with them, I ask, "What specifically do you want me to pray for?" You absolutely must make sure you are in perfect agreement about what your prayer request is before you join with another believer in the prayer of agreement. There is a simple spiritual explanation for this. God will not do
something against your will. God cannot violate free will. If you don't have faith to do something, He won't arbitrarily override your lack of faith. This faith will make you exhibit a lifestyle of authority.

SHALOM!

The effective prayer of the righteous can very much, we have power and authority in Christ Jesus who won on the cross of Calvary to give us the authority that was taken away because of sin, very good brother, thanks for sharing God reward their effort and dedication. God bless you

There need be no rules for God because He is perfect, just, omniscient, righteous, and He is governed by His perfect nature.

Truly, God's existence is inexplicable.

Your post is a beautiful exposition on this:

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. (John 14:12)

Thanks for sharing @godswilldaudu234.
Kind regards.

Thanks for taking time to read through, I hope you have been blessed @degreatmyke

Even though the words are ours, but power and authority comes from the MOST HIGH GOD. Hallelujah
