Captain America Sketch
By: Otho Bot
I'm a person who enjoys drawing cartoons, and comics and posting them in this website and couple others. However, I never actually displayed my process. Please do keep in mind that this is my personal artistic process, and be aware I'm not professional nor was I taught by a professional, or have taken any legitimate classes. I'm 100% a hobbyist, so don't expect a professional level quality of detailing in the process, and expect an unorthodox process.
I start of by drawing a skeleton or a template for the pose of my character. The template is rough and is usually just a sitckman figure. However i emphasize where the joints will be, and width and length of the character's body. This is basically just a rough estimation of the character's dimensions.
After that, I add the details (rough sketch). I love to exaggerate my drawings, I personal believe that it gives it more life and motion, so I exaggerate the muscles. When drawing the character's body it's important to understand anatomy, and not just what the body looks like, but what it looks like from varying angles. Any part of the body looks oddly misshaped and distorted from different angles. This is just a rough sketch on what the details should look like, in this step I give myself liberty to do whatever I want and see what fits and what doesn't.
Now the inking, by inking I finalize the entire sketch. Adding in fine details, and refining the rough sketch.
After I finalize the sketch, I add in the base colours of the character. In this case I googled captain america from the comics and imitate it's base color (red, white, blue ,skin color).
Note that it's important to learn from other artist, imitating doesn't make you unoriginal or uncreative, it just makes you a better artist, learn other styles and technique to create your own original creative style
After adding the base colors I then proceeded to add dark areas. I do this by picking a certain angle of light, and color opposite of that angle to create shadow effects thereby adding dimensions.
I add even darker shadows in areas where light cannot be seen.
Then I add light colors to create a brighter looking character
Then, I pretty much did the same thing for the shield
Lastly, I added some special effects, like adding dirty and reflections on the shield, some scratches. I also adding some rim lighting to the character, just for more visual appeal
Tada! all done..I think, I hope you enjoy that process. And a piece of advice when drawing something, take your time, and don't be too hard on yourself. I tend to hate everything I make once it's finished, but learning to like your own work is the first step for others to like it too. I hope you enjoy this.
