Whelp, it's been 2 years since I heard about Steem from James Corbett on @thecorbettreport. It's been an interesting ride for sure. I had no idea what Steem would end up being about when I joined. I don't even think it was about the money, I heard it was about privacy and decentralized ownership, pretty sure that a currency "like" Bitcoin was mentioned, but I didn't know how it would work. The funny part was at that time you had to sign up with either your Facebook Account or Reddit, so there went the expectation of privacy before you even joined.
The trend at the time I joined was long-form, non-offensive, essay style writing. It seemed that everyone just finished their first English 101 skills and were pumping out beautifully formatted Essays on many topics. The longer the better even if the point of the article got lost in the words, that was what was getting rewarded. The guilds had begun to form and they didn't like anything controversial. (No, we shall not debate)
Everyone was talking about Quality Content, which confused me right from the beginning. On day three I wrote a post about how seeking quality content was poor choice as there are ZERO highly engaging models of "Quality Content" sites and it would greatly limit end-users and what type of content creators Steem would attract.
https://steemit.com/currency/@whatsup/my-arrogant-marketing-advice
I have been reading articles on how to write good articles, how to get noticed and how to earn. That is not what made Social Media a hit. Social Media is a hit, because you can find people to connect with on several levels. Friends, Family, people who live in your city, people who like to debate a specific topic, etc. So, you aren't just roaming through random content, you are reading and reacting to those with whom you have a connection.
There is no focus on excellent writing on FB, Twitter or any other successful Social Media platform. In fact, all the discussion of excellent articles and writing is actually intimidating and will run casual users away.
Encourage people to post like they would on Facebook, little updates, family pictures. Give people a way to communicate with others in a casual way like Twitter. There are a limited number of Authors out there. Although you may want to attract them, you do not want to run off the casual user. Encourage people to write and to write often. Give people groups, categories, pages and ways to connect. If the users come the content will follow!!!
^ Haha Day three and I didn't even know how to upload a picture, but I was already confused by the cry for Quality Content, which to this day I feel like intimidates new users from engagement. I would have pitched fun engagement from people around the world with all different levels of education, different interests and lots of desire to connect with others. I would have pitched onboarding mainstream and educating them on Crypto. Yet, here we are.
If you are wondering if we were all peaceful and happy back then,.. No the whistleblowers, Sock Puppet Hunters were already alive and well. AutoVoter and a voting site called Steemian were in their early days and we already had a problem with curation and rewarding engaging content. The trending page was ruled by a select few and minnows couldn't get attention or votes. I hated the autovoter and turned off many whales and large accounts with my non-stop arguing and being irritated with the bots. I guess I have changed on that issue. :) lol, we all survived.
In any case, it has been an interesting and engaging journey, I've made 10054 comments and posts and today's value of my account is a tiny bit sickening. :) I'll be back tomorrow and I will keep posting!
Thank you all who came before and after my journey started. It's been interesting, fun and educational, more than anything I am thankful for the education on Freedom, Crypto, and the challenges it takes to "live" our ideas.
Mine is tomorrow,...
Happy Birthday, Tomorrow, in case I miss you then. :)
Thank you!
I hope your's went well.
@whatsup,
Congratz my dear friend! You made an amazing journey here! I am just 1 year old baby on STEEMIT! Not gained so much of experiences but yeah trying to do my best!
See ya tomorrow with another great article! It always helps us and specially minnows!
Cheers~
:) You've done well, you were a little sleeper cell. One of the few that has really stuck it out and found a niche. By the way, the second year your account really starts to grow. Hang in there my friend.
@whatsup,
Really appreciate your words! I think this year will grow your account too! Specially when SMT hits, our accounts might worth Millions $$$!
Cheers~
That's a long time. Congratulations! You seem to be one of the most active if not the most active "old timers". lol
Hopefully in another 2 years your account value will be way higher.
It feels like dog years today! lol
It probably should since the site is so young. lol It feels like I've been on here like 2 years so I would peg you at about 10 or 20. lol
Great! Where is the fridge?
Congrats to you.
LOL - we both have the same mentor!
James John Corbett was an American professional boxer and a former World Heavyweight Champion, best known as the man who defeated the great John L. Sullivan.
I sometimes think James is indirectly responsible for half the best content on Steemit.
Bloody "quality content" - the world really wants more utter shit :)
haha... James is great, so non-drama, dry deliberate truth without drama and doom.
Congrats on the steemversary!
I can imagine it is not pleasant to have a look at the value of your account! But this can be completely different after a month or 2! For the better I do hope!
Cheers,
Peter
It's a bit sad right now for sure.
Congratulations two years of hustle and fun into steemit :D many more year's to come cheers :D
Thank you.
Happy Steemit Birthday @whatsup!
Congratulations on a pretty awesome milestone :)
You've got to have just had yours or be getting close also?
July 22 was my Steemiversary 🎉
I can't believe 2 years have passed!
Happy 2 year anniversary. You really ADD a lot to the Steemit Community , @whatsup. Thank you for that :)
I try... I treat it like an investment and a job. It's my responsibility to help grow the place. I wish some others would get on the bandwagon.
Treat it like you own it, because you do!
That is pretty crazy. Hard to believe. Time flies when you are having fun.
Happy Steemit Birthday, @Whatsup!
"Day three and I didn't even know how to upload a picture, but I was already confused by the cry for Quality Content"
I love that you took Steemit to task on Day 3. I'm only surprised you didn't roast them a little on Days 1 and 2 as well lol!
"turned off many whales and large accounts with my non-stop arguing"
Please never ever stop your "nonstop arguing." You never do it in a mean way, and attitude like that is the definition of engaging content. :)
Thank you
Well congrats on the mile stone.
thanks!!
You're welcome. It's always nice to see those round numbers.
I just hit 200 days the other day and 1000 followers (as long as nobody unfollows lol) so I know the feeling a little bit.
Dude!! Congratulations!!
Dude, Thanks... (I'm not a dude.) I'm female, fyi. Not offended or anything.
Oh lol! I call everyone dude. I called my busted water bottle dude this morning!
4KHQ. Do you remember?

I do remember... :) lol.
FULLHQ posts go above and beyond the scope of HQ posts for a variety of reasons. FULLHQ was born out of a desire to move beyond the everyday mainstream HQ blogging world with its “everyday world” focus, and into the subjective and warped mind of the artist. It can encompass parody, comics, art, writing and basically anything that lies on the outside of mainstream HQ. The central identity of FULLHQ is a rejection of the standardized topics of the HQ world, both within Steemit and the broader blogging ecosphere including Medium, online blogs and self-help guru idea factories.

OMG YOU REMEMBER

It’s safe to say that the experiment here went sideways and without an app like Partiko (which gives you points for commenting, upvoting, etc) Steem is a lonely experience and shares some similarities with MySpace in the early days. Unless something happens soon, it will be displaced as many competitors are perched on the horizon.

We don't need quality, we need fantasy....
Your pics and videos are always great. There are not many people who can get away with dropping a photo and it works.

Happy two year anniversary! I bet you've seen a lot in those two years.
It has been an interesting journey for sure. Thank you, I hope to be here for your 2nd birthday too.
happy 2nd anniversary whatsuo, very very great journey. I recently joined in steemit family. Your foot prints will give me a right direction.
Welcome to 3rd year on steemit
Happy birthday!!!!! Sorry I missed it!
Happy Steemiversary! It's certainly changed around here, but it's good to see so many people have stuck with it. I still have great hopes for it.
Yep, steevc, I think you are someone who shows up, does your thing, never complains, helps others. I am glad you are here.
Happy Steemiversary @whatsup... seems you and I were one week apart on joining.
Hey Shadowspub, did you just have yours or is it comingup? I feel like you were already here when I got here.
I had mine on the 5th ... so I was but just barely... mathematician that I am.. that is two weeks apart not one
Congratulations for the second year!!! It’s funny how the things changes with the time...
I enjoyed your post.
Steem on
Thanks, it is interesting how things change.
Congrats on the milestone! I am seeing more users celebrating milestones here, all with different approaches which demonstrate what is great here; diversity on what you want to post. This ultimately creates communities within the community which will increase adoption and interest for the growth needed to succeed.
I think something we can all do is celebrate success and not just our own. Sometimes we get too focused on what is wrong and not enough on what is right.
Congrats...you shared the date with @gringalicious...great to be here...more years to come...👍

nice, I didn't know that. But there were a LOT of us who started at that same time. Steem was getting a little bit of press.
It was interesting because both the post are coming in mybfeed one after the another

Happy Steemiversary @whatsup :) Loved your take on quality content and the point of "social" media. Some things haven't changed that much maybe! :)
Congratulations dear. 2 years here is definitely no mean feat.
Thank you! I hope to be here on your second anniversary.
Congrats on two years.
Give it some time and it will be worth 5-10x what it is now, like it was 14 weeks ago. I have taken to using your account as a barometer of what is possible here and extrapolate what it would look like if Steem was back to 4.00 or was to go up to 10.00 or 100.00. Like it or not, you are an inspiration to many of us climbing the ladder behind you.
Yep, that is why I am still here, well, that and I think it is fun.
haha, More now
you are
Congrats. I wish I would have gotten in 2 years ago instead of only 6 months ago. Oh well, we have to make the best of the cards we are dealt. happy second birthday.
That is a great compliment to me, that is great to hear.
2 years!! Congrats!! That’s an accomplishment my friend. It’s hard to stick it out here in the first few months but I feel the longer ya stay...the more you are committed. At least for me. I look forward to my 1 year here which is still a ways away. Either way, best wishes on the way to year 3 for Ya!!
Thank you Blewitt, I'm likely to be here next year too. I give myself 5 years. I'll be bored to tears after that.
Lol
Yeah I hope we are all here in 5 years. Would be fun to see the site progress from what it is now to what it “could” be. How would you say it’s different from 2 years ago?
Congrats :)
thanks
A great congratulations you've influenced me positively in just six months of knowing you 😁😁😁
That's great to hear. Thank you, I write to the smaller users a lot. Hoping to share the experience of grinding out an account without whale support.
Very nice @whatsup! Congrats! You got in about a year before me and are doing very well. Don't get down over your account value. We're all feeling the crunch. Have a great day. :)
For sure we have all taken pay cuts at all levels. Hang in there and so will I.
Congrats!
Thanks!
2 years in steemit life = 20 year in real life
congrats
Feels like it!
Congratulations! We hope to have you around for many more years to come!
I likely have about 3 left in me. Unless something terrible happens.
Happy Steem Anniversary :)
Well glad to know some earlier ways of interacting with each other it seems some things never change !
While as time is passing by it sure is getting much more difficult
The power of money still do exists !
While apart from all that I do believe in it and hope it has great future ahead !
Well earning money is rarely easy. Otherwise it isn't earning, it is something else.

Cool happy steemians
Yep, I joined the same time. I just did a post going down memory lane I remember all of that. I am excited about all the growth in steem. Seems like we had nothing but time to get into arguments 2 years ago. Now we have new apps and games. Although nothing beats guessing how many candies were in a jar.
