While your actions affect your reputation in the eyes of others, you have very little control over what they ascribe to you and what one person might value, another will devalue. What this means is the reputation is not "the" it is as numerous as every person who has given you some kind of "reputation score" they have built. This makes the reputation one will protect not only egotistical, but quite impossible a journey because the protection in one set of eyes is the degradation in another pair.
