I really like this idea. I do a fair amount of research and am constantly running into a publication that has blocked me from accessing the papers. Open source is definitely the direction science should take.

Do you know sci hub? That's the current most popular solution to that issue ;-) Current url can be found at wikipedia
There also is an Open Access movement for publishing, but they're so spread out over different places that their total impact is very low.
