How to delegate Steem, and why you should

in #steem6 years ago

I have written about this topic before, but it is worth repeating. I think delegation is a very powerful tool on Steem. It allows you to lend someone else your Steem Power. You can take it back at any time, but have to wait seven days until you get it back to prevent double voting. You do not earn directly from the delegation, but you can charge for it and some accounts will pay you anyway based on what they can do with it.

So, firstly you need to know how to delegate. I should say that you need to ensure you retain some SP or you will run out of resource credits and not be able to do much with your account, so you really need to have at least a few hundred SP. I am really aiming this at those with thousands as they can do a lot more to change the balance of Steem.

Stemit WalletMy preferred way to delegate is using the @steem-plus browser plug-in. This adds a button to the . I was having issues with this only appearing when I was logged in and I kept getting logged out. A discussion with SteemPlus developer @stoodkev on Discord clarified that I could be logged in with my posting key when I had been using my active key. I only need the latter when making a transfer or use the market as before. The posting key allows you to claim rewards.

Button

That button takes you to a screen to set up the delegation. When you submit you need to confirm by logging into SteemConnect. I would hope you have already used this. It is developed by Steemit Inc and can be trusted
with your active key. I strongly recommend using a password manager such as LastPass. One advantage of this is that it is not easily fooled by fake sites as a human might be.

Delegate

There are other ways to delegate, but I really do not know why it is not a standard feature of the Steemit site. I see busy.org does have it. If you want to check the state of your delegations then Steem Reports can do this. That is also useful to see what others are doing.

Who you delegate to is entirely up to you. Projects such as @actifit will send you some rewards for doing so. I give some to @isotonic, which is a small voting bot for the runners that also pays me a little. Others such as @steem-plus, @steembasicincome and @steem-ua take it into consideration when calculating how big a vote to give to your posts.

I found out at the weekend that another account I delegated was holding some rewards I could claim, but was changing its purpose. I used that Steem to buy more SBI shares for the small accounts I am supporting.

I delegate a lot to small accounts to help them out. If I get then up to 500 SP in total then they at least get the voting slider and their vote will be worth about a cent. This is as part of #TenKMinnows and #MayBeAMinnow. I would love to see more dolphins doing this. By empowering the small accounts we give them more reason to stick with Steem. I do not mind if they use it to self-vote their posts, but I hope they will also support others and earn a little curation rewards in the process. This spreads the votes further than I would. All my voting is manual and so is limited by my available time.

Another group I have delegated to are people who I created accounts for. If you go through the verification process by signing up with Steemit then they delegate a small amount to you so you can use the platform. I give a bit more to those accounts I create. A few of them are active and I will review adjusting their delegation in future.

I know some people mainly delegate for profit, but that is not my prime motivation. I want to make Steem better and this is part of my small contribution to empower others.

I hope this has been helpful to someone. I welcome further suggestions on what can be done with delegation. Just do not beg me to give to you are I am very choosy.

Whilst I am here I will mention a coversation I have been having on Twitter. DK - Full stoptrending well is obviously a true believer in the Church of Bitcoin and considers all other crypto to be 'shitcoins', including Steem. Feel free to go and wind him up. Despite his efforts #Steem is on Twitter according to @demotruk. We can help that by tweeting about it and linking to good content here.

Steem on!

Good stuff! Thanks for @isotonic reminder!

Nice post. I have been delegating a lot more recently. I think some would say I am probably delegating too much for the size of my account. I am constantly growing though so that is good.

It's good of you to support others. It all adds up.

If there are many wonderful people in steem there are also who are don't. That's their investment after all, but we know. Giving is better than receiving, many will love you and look up high on you. By the way sir, how to set days in delegation? I will buy steem power as a delegation but I want to make it shorter. How to do that if you don't mind?

Taking delegation back is a manual process. You can't set how long it lasts

Hey @steevc, it actually only takes 5 days to return a delegation - it was changed alongside the RC system.

Also, shameless self promo, I made a tool for generating delegation links at https://steem.tools/delegate

Interesting. How is double voting prevented? I see projects with links to delegate, which makes it easier. I know Steemconnect can do all sorts of things, some you have to know how to generate appropriate urls for it

Well, as it takes 5 days to return - and 5 days is the maximum time needed to recover RC/VP that's how they prevent double voting!

I guess that works in terms of voting power. I was thinking of the payout time. Some of these things are just not obvious

Actually, that's a fair point! 🤔
Apologies if my comment came off a bit strong.

I'm not having a go at you. I'm fairly experienced with Steem, but still learning. It must be much harder for new users

Aren't we all? 😃

Helpful reminder :)
I manage delegations through steemworld.org, which is another option that people can use.
Delegations can help small accounts grow, they are useful to help businesses grow which will bring more people to steem.

I do use Steemworld, but hadn't used it for delegation. It's great that there are multiple ways to do everything on Steem, so we are not reliant on a single site that could (and has) gone down.

Yes I agree bigger accounts should help out the little guys. I have been helped by delegations and soon will start doing the same.

We need the small accounts if Steem is to grow. I know it can be hard when you start out.

Thanks for the info about delegation and I like it. By the way, how do I sign up for a new account because I lost my master key on this Steemit account? I think I will just try to register for a new Steemit like I did when I made this account, my first account on Steemit. I may look more into delegating in the future. I am not sure if I am ready to delegate and to make another account and everything yet. I am taking baby steps towards all of my goals. Thanks again. Resteemed. Upvoted.

Do you at least have the active key so you can extract your Steem? If you need an extra account then DM me on Discord and I can create it for you. Then you can delegate to it from this one. Just make sure to keep a safe copy of all the keys. As I mentioned Lastpass can help with that.

Yes. I have my active key. But say, for example, if you didn't delegate to help make me a new account, does that mean somebody else would have to? My question is about how accounts are created. When somebody registers for an account, is there some kind of lottery like there is in the NBA where Steem Witnesses get to decide whether or not they want to vet the new accounts through delegation? Are only the witnesses choosing which new accounts are approved through delegation which costs some SP right?

Thanks

I will be keeping better track of my keys. I actually had my public master key but it was not my private master key. I have my keys safe. I lost my master one a long time ago as I was in Vietnam in 2017 when I first joined Steemit. I moved back to America in 2017 and I had my master key saved in my Firefox web browser and that was probably it. I thought I had my master key saved in other locations but can't seem to find it anywhere. I updated my master key password on my web browser with a regular posting key later on and I didn't realize it at that time and I thought that Firefox would keep a log of previous passwords, logins, but it didn't. Firefox only has the most recent updated passwords (keys) for different websites you log into as far as I can tell. So, I learned that the hard way and I really thought I had my master key saved maybe in an email, maybe on my computer, maybe on a piece of paper, but can't find them. I have my other keys saved. I'll do better next time. Still learning.

As I understand it someone at Steemit Inc has to verify your account and then they delegate to your new account (possibly from the @steem account). It is nothing to do with the witnesses. I think that delegation lapses at some point and can be withdrawn earlier if the account is reported for abuse.

Anyone can create accounts if they have enough resource credits. I have claimed loads that I can give away, but they do not come with any SP delegation by default. This is why I have delegated to accounts I create.

I know a lot of people have lost keys. I think it is made fairly clear to people that it is up to them to save them, but we are used to being able to recover accounts easily on other platforms. It's harder on Steem.

I have 580 SP so probably need to wait a while before I start delegating...useful and good to know, thanks @Steevc

I think you should keep building your account up for now. I see you bought some Steem, so I hope your investment pays off.

cool, thanks for the tip.

I tried to delegate 100SP but without success.

The URL I used: https://app.steemconnect.com/sign/delegateVestingShares?delegator=starx&delegatee=ocdb&vesting_shares=199630.000000%20VESTS

sc1.png

Using my active private key or master password, I always get this error: Missing Active Authority

sc2.png

What does it means? Must I grant an active permission to SteemConnect?
How to fix it? I need some help.

Not sure why that would be. Maybe ask on the Steem Plus discord

Steem is for geeks only :(Thank you. I thought about granting permission reading this https://developers.steem.io/tutorials-javascript/grant_active_permission

It's been a while since I first used Steemconnect. It's shouldn't just be for geeks of we have friendly apps. I know plenty of non-techie people on here

Yep delegating is important for sure!

Freedomtribe has my biggest support at a 500 sp delegation. Great people and group.

You can support good things by delegating to new people as well.

Good for you. We can make Steem great by helping each other.

Yep. Been teaching friends and growing a small group @theplayersclub which helps us all to start swimming and make our own value.

I've taught a bunch of people to invest and hustle to grow. Makes people jealous I get it.

But long term... Let's say it does go up.... Then my friends will definitely be quite well off as well me for helping.

Pay it forwards...
