For someone that has been on steemit since July 2016 I have seen all of this and the highs and lows.
The dead accounts is something that worries me most. Of the over 200k accts steemit has less than half are active. That isn't real growth.
I think the issue you mentioned of imbalance between content creators and readers is on target. For anyone that is not a content creator what is the point of really staying outside of those that just enjoy engaging in the community regardless of the rewards.

In principle, I notice this also in Germany. Here grows a wonderful community. Sometimes I get the feeling that this community is more important for some people than Steemit himself (in a good way!). I get you're point.
