Because eSteem gives you the ability to send STEEM and everything. But I'm surprised it doesn't give you the option to only put it in "post" mode and only use the posting key. I don't remember what happened when I set eSteem up on my phones.

About it being safe. The programmer who made eSteem is really good and at any given time what you risk is your liquid rewards. If let's say a hacker got into your account and started a power down you would realize it. If they tried to change the password there is a recovery option where you can retrieve your password. Ultimately even web browsers are insecure to some respects but @dan designed the ability to recovery these accounts and this mechanism is way more safe than having other coins in a wallet because of the nature that most of the funds are locked up in Steem Power.
