Dynamic(Selective) Length of Power Up and Down / 다이나믹(선택적) 파워 업과 다운 기간

Are we sure that reducing current power down period from 13 weeks to 4 weeks is superior to one another and do the magic? Will it lower the entry barrier enough to make Steem(it) prosperous with whole bunch of new comers from outside? Will it also bring back the RIPs to shrine life once again?

Well, maybe. But I'd say it will be a short term celebration even if so. Someone new that will be joining steem(it) will never know how it was like to have 13 weeks to power down but only 4 and they will start arguing again how long(or unnecessary) the 4 weeks power down is by comparing to EOS or other blockchains with only a few days.

How about those(us) who's been through 13 weeks power down era? How long can the satisfaction last if we reduce it to 4? We all humans adapt to new things eventually pretty quick especially with things that makes our life easier and there's always been a demand for more, we all know that. But often it comes with a consequence and what really matters the most is to find the right balance.

I'd say we need to find the right balance between pros and cons of 13 and 4. To do that, I propose two different methods.

  • Common Base Rule to be applied : "Let people choose the length(1~13) of power down duration when powering up"

Method 1 :

Playing with Derogation Rule. (SPS, Witness Vote, RC, Reward Pool, etc)

Those who chose :

  • 13 weeks : Every access to the steem blockchain at 100%
  • 12 weeks : Every access to the steem blockchain at 92.3%
  • 11 weeks : Every access to the steem blockchain at 84.6%
  • .
  • .
  • .
  • 4 weeks : Every access to the steem blockchain at 30.7%
  • 1 week : Every access to the steem blockchain at 7.7%

Method 2 :

Playing with level of access rights.

Those who chose :

1 week : Full Access to RC
4 weeks : Full Access to RC + Reward Pool
8 weeks : Full Access to RC + Reward Pool + SP inflationary reward + SMT Communities Creation
13 weeks : Full Access to RC + Reward Pool + SP inflationary reward + SMT Communities Creation + SPS + Witness Vote

Although above methods are just an example but you get the idea. It is to encourage people to devote themselves more into steem blockchain by playing carrots via selective engagement instead of leaving people with no options and making them think(or feel) how it creates entry barrier or how unnecessary they perceive to have 13 weeks power down period.

If we simply reduce the power down period to 4 weeks now then people will be soaked up to the short term satisfaction and forget about it for a while; but eventually it will rise again then it will require another energy to build to bring this argument up which will never end. For this reason, I highly suggest we hold on to moving to 4 weeks for now and fix it to the proper way after the SMT HF so the argument is over once and for all. I will vote against 4 weeks power down for now.

I know this change I suggest is a very challenging one as we already have a complex blockchain, but such a hard effort comes with a greater prize.

예를 들어 파워다운 선택 기간 : (1~13주)

방법 1 :

기간 선택에 따른 할인/감가 적용 (SPS, 증인투표, RC, 리워드풀, 등)

  • 13 주 : 스팀 블록체인의 모든 기능을 100%로 현행처럼 사용가능
  • 12 주 : 스팀 블록체인의 모든 기능을 92.3%로 사용가능
  • 11 주 : 스팀 블록체인의 모든 기능을 84.6%로 사용가능
  • .
  • .
  • .
  • 4 주 : 스팀 블록체인의 모든 기능을 30.7%로 사용가능
  • 1 주 : 스팀 블록체인의 모든 기능을 7.7%로 사용가능

방법 2 :

파워다운 선택 기간에 따른 접근 권한 부여

1 주 : RC 사용권한
4 주 : RC + 리워드풀 사용권한
8 주 : RC + 리워드풀 + SP 인플레션 보상 + SMT 커뮤니티 생성 사용권한
13 주 :RC + 리워드풀 + SP 인플레션 보상 + SMT 커뮤니티 생성 + SPS 및 증인투표 사용권한

현 시스템 13주에서 바로 4주로 단순히 낮추는 것이 얼마나 큰 도움을 주는지 잘 와닿지 않았고 과연 4주로 낮춘들 또 다시 1주일로 낮추자 혹은 3일로 혹은 하루로 낮추자라는 얘기가 나오지 않을 것인가에 대한 의문이 있었다. 이 구간이 진입 장벽이 되므로 기간을 줄이는 게 정말 진입 장벽을 낮출 수 있는 것일까? 13주 파워다운 기간에 스팀잇을 접한 사람들에겐 그렇게 느낄지 모르나 4주로 낮아진 이후 스팀잇을 접한 사람들에겐 4주도 길지 않을까?

문제는 단순한 기간을 줄이는 게 아니라 생각했고 파워다운 길이에 따라 각 구간별 혜택을 스팀 블록체인에 대한 접근 권한을 부여하는 방식으로 주는 게 맞지 않을까 하는 생각을 했다. 물론 이 것이 설계되고 적용되기까지 얼마나 또 복잡하고 어려운 작업일지 잘 안다. 다만, 지금 당장 13주를 4주로 단순히 낮추는 게 궁극적인 방법은 아니라 판단되기에 그리고 또 Recovery 기간 관련 문제로 계정 보안에 위험을 가져올 수 있는 문제는 더 고민해봐야할 부분으로 생각된다.

위에서 언급한 다이나믹한 설계를 적용하는 것이 얼마나 또 어려운 작업일지는 잘 안다만 당장 파워다운 기간을 4주로 낮추면 잠시의 기쁨에 젖어 다시 한번 파워다운 기간에 대한 논의가 시작되기까지 어느정도 에너지와 시간을 필요로 할 것이며 지금과 똑같은 싸움을 그때에 다시 하기보다는 지금 4주 파워다운 적용을 SMT 하드포크 이후로 미루고 올바르게 설계해서 다음 하드포크에 적용되기를 바란다.

이러한 이유로 나는 아직은 4주 파워다운 반대 제안서에 지지를 표한다.

That is exactly the problem. Most people who disagree with 13 weeks, will most likely also disagree with 4 weeks, even though it might be the better evil.

But 13 weeks isn't ultimately bad, it only becomes bad when the incentives aren't there. IMO, it makes more sense, to implement incentives for longer power-down-time, instead of removing it altogether.

Similar to your 2nd method, there could also be incentives for increased powerdown time: (rough example numbers)

8% p.a3 months
14% p.a6 months
20% p.a1 year

Interest rates have been shit for banks for a long time, but there's a concept called a CD ladder, where you have a wide range of CDs with different maturities/rates. This way you regularly have a CD maturing and liquid cash available. I could see laddering my power-ups in the same way if a choice were given.

In my opinion From 13 weeks to 4 weeks will have it's advantages and well as it's disadvantages as well however I feel it's something that will be done later because the pressure is on.

4주로 변경 후에 스팀을 알게 된 사람들은 그 기간조차 길게 느껴지겠네요~
저도 4주로 무작정 변경하는 건 보안적인 문제도 있고 좀 조심스럽다고 생각되네요~

아무래도 보안 문제가 좀 우선시 되긴해야하는 것 같아요.

Method 1 seems more simple to understand and implement. However, I do really like your method 2.

However, 3 issues I don't think you covered that I would like to address.

  1. This is a lot more complicated than changing the variable from 13 to 4 weeks. It would take more time. I agree though, such a change shouldn't be rushed. This is populism and a fundamental change to Steem.
  2. A main issue with the proposal is a security risk. If it isn't changed, some people may just want a 13-week lockdown ability to avoid losing 25% of Steem if hacked.
  3. You mentioned SPS, maybe call it Steem Dao as some aren't familiar with the meaning SPS, at least you recognize this is a very important 13-week aspect.

First of all, it is necessary to protect the user against account theft.
From this point of view the period should be at least 5 weeks.
