My Average Payout Per Post Dropped After Hard Fork 19 (My Thoughts)

in #steem7 years ago

So it has almost been 10 days since Hard Fork 19 rolled out and we are enjoying a new sense of self reliance.  Since we went to linear rewards our votes are actually worth something.  I'm still in total support of this change and in my opinion this is what is going to move the platform forward.  Now you can see up above a screenshot from SteemViz and my average pending payout / post is 23.96 Steem Dollars.  Right when we hit Hard Fork 19 I took a screenshot and my average was 87.58 Steem Dollars / post.  That is a huge decrease.  Now I'm only getting about 1/3 the rewards.

So the thing to note is that before HF 19 everyone was voting the old way.  Went the hard fork went into effect funds were reallocated so since I had a lot of votes by people who weren't as powerful I had a big earnings jump.  one of the things I have realized is that my minimum payout for the most part has increased.   Before I felt like my minimum post payout was around $5 and now it is around $10 but then my post that get paid out the most aren't going as high.   Overall for the platform I think this is a good thing because the payouts are getting spread around a lot better.

Also a big thing is that some people still haven't figured out how to manage their voting power at this point.  I'm one of those people in some respects.   I have usually been between 20% and 30% voting power this whole time.

I have been going hog wild on the voting but I think that is a good thing.   Before Hard Fork 19 my power stayed between 60 and 70% but ever since then it has been crushed.

Conclusion

In my situation my full vote is worth over a dollar but with my power smashed like this I'm only able to give myself $0.25 when I post.   Now imagine the users who have a vote worth $100.  If their power is smashed like that and they are only going to be able to pay themselves $25 instead of $100 that is a huge difference.   It might be the same percentage difference but I'm not going to miss the $0.75 as much as they are going to miss the $75.  Those differences can change a persons life across multiple posts / day.

Ultimately we aren't getting as many bot votes because people are trying to figure out how to best manage it.   I know some users have had to turn their bots off to recover their power and try to find the sweet spot.   I might have to make some adjustments as well.   I feel like to get a good gauge on how all this is going to work we are almost going to have to wait another couple of weeks to see a better look at the stats.  Once we get a better handle on our voting power situation we will be able to track voting behavior better.  This first week is a little thrown off because of the excitement and massive voting that first day and then we have had a hangover period.

Have any of you Steemians noticed any differences in your earnings / post?

There are obviously pros and cons to HF19 depending on how you look at it and who you are in regards to SP and how much your vote is worth. I definitely think we need more data to truly understand the impact of HF19 though.

The data will be very valuable in a few weeks. I still feel like the scenario that is plying out right now is better than what it was like before.

Maybe HF19 means "hefty fiething of 19% of rewards." :-p

Maybe.... I think we will see it adjust as time goes on. Plus there have been a lot of people join the platform so the rewards get spread out to more people.

We need STEEM to jump to $5 and then there will be smiles on our faces ear to ear!

Well you got me thinking with that post!

Here is an alternative perspective (mine)

My most recent 10 posts since the hardfork have totalled $362.02 an average of $36.20 each

Meanwhile my 10 last posts before the hardfork only managed $38.29 an average of $3.82 each

So my average payouts have increased by more than 9 times!

What is happening here is that all the money that was going to you is now going to me and I'm loving it.

Soon I will be able to afford a swimming pool too!

That is some funny shit! 100% upvote for that!

mine too !! If people can only up vote 10 times a day at 100% , then most are only voting 1% or 2% so they can up vote more , or they only up voting 10 times , so like me im barely getting any up votes anymore ! It sucks!👍👍👍

Yeah that 1% or 2% stuff is weak sauce! I just go animal on these upvote buttons. Here is another 100% upvote for you!

LOL thanks ! But be careful !👍👍👍

I wish someone told me about managing my vote power when I started, I had no idea that was a thing. I need to make a video on that. Great post @brianphobos as usual!

Well it honestly isn't that big of a deal unless you have a lot of Steem Power and you want to keep it high so that when you post your blog post will get a bigger payout upfront from your own vote.

Good point especially the aspect of managing voting power. I think the new update has helped lots of new members have a voic here and thus a win win for all due to increase in signups.

Yeah I feel like it has too. Just look at Google trends to see the flood coming here.

Good point

Way to break it down... its been around 8 days, I am still trying to find my sweet spot in the power voting :)

It feels a lot better post HF-19

yeah I feel better about it as well overall.

nice articles...thanks for sharing information ..followed..

Steem is still beta, I think they are still trying to tweak the algoritms to spread as much as possible and avoid the whale concentration

It is going in a positive direction overall in my opinion after being here on Steemit for 20 years.

all payouts go back to preHF19 levels...

All your payouts went back to it?

I didn't make much money before and now I'm making about the same. 10~15$ per post usually.

yeah i saw a huge loss of 2,5 k lol with the new stuff! its just is what it is!

@allasyummyfood haha with your daily yummies I dont think that we will ever see a loss in weight rather some healthy weight gains...keep steeming my friend.

Hmmm, that is interesting. You are doing really good with your posts though. It will be interesting to see where it is in a couple of weeks.

yeah interesting , i dont want them to drop anymore thou!

Well right now there is over whelming interest in Steemit. Just check Google Trends here and the interest in this platform blows last years peak away. If that ultimately results in people powering up earnings they might have made in Bitcoin, Ethereum or something else then we could see a boost in the price and it could be a whole other ball game.

yeah sounds good! let me check !!

I feel like I've experienced an overall increase, but it seems after the initial excitement, folks are now being much more careful with their voting power as you mentioned. So it seems that my lower limit has gone up but there is more of a ceiling now.

What is that tool you use to check your voting power?

See now here is the problem. I've been so busy researching cryptos, I really do need to understand more about "voting power". Upvoted for reminding me to look into that........Why do I feel like that was the wrong thing to do? lol

It isn't the wrong thing to do. That is what I'm trying to figure out over time is if people will become almost more stingy with their votes since now their vote actually counts for something. Once that amount becomes impactful to their lives it will be interesting if they hoard the power to vote their own stuff.

I've been experimenting with a few voting techniques because it's early days for me. But I've jumped up a few followers much quicker than I expected. I'm only just catching up with the internal steem market, now I've got to figure out voting too? lol.

I'm just going to keep uppvoting things I like, things that make me laugh, content that makes me think and inspires me.

Hope that works

Yeah I don't worry about the voting power too much to be honest at this point. If my vote was worth $10 I guess I would a little more because then if it was close to 100% power I could give myself an automatic $10 on the post already but that isn't the case right now.

Oh yes... I was rejoicing when I finally got $2 on one of my post then saw it being reduced to less than a dollar over the days... hahaha... not much compared what you lost but for a minnow, that's a great deal. Jokes aside, I read that this has something to do with steem losing value over usd.

yeah that was a separate situation for the most part. It takes the average over 3 or 3.5 days so you would see some erosion when the price dropped. But I'm more looking at the payout averages on totally different posts all together.

Looks like hf19 was great only 1 day :D

I feel like the jury is still out. We will see after everyone figures out the best methods with it.

The number of votes on my posts has gone down. Now I'm not here bitching. I just think it's strange that as I gain a larger following, I seem to get fewer votes per post. I used to be able to get over 100 votes on a post when I had 400 or less followers. I've reached 800 followers and now get around 30 votes. What I think is happening is the community is growing rapidly, therefore posts are harder to notice. I'll admit that I have some favorite authors who I used to read and upvote daily. Now that my feed has much more content pouring into it, I see those favorite authors less and less. I am just riding the ups and downs and hanging in here for the long run.

yeah the vote counts have went down and part of that is bot related as well. I'm also experiencing the same thing as far as my feed being flooded. It is hard to keep up with. So many posts poring in everyday.

I have noticed the exact same thing @countryinspired, nearly identical to your situation. I think you're right, we gotta just keep riding the waves.

Well, even if our pay drops by 99%, we will still be 100X better than Facebook :D

You can check out @ENAZWAHSDARB for the best Entrepreneurial content! If you appreciate what you see, you can leave a follow! :)

That is true but I don't post on Facebook. I just use it to connect to Tinder and Bumble.

I have noticed a huge decrease in post payouts since the hardfork as well, but in a different way. What I have noticed is that I am getting WAY fewer votes on posts than I used to. Before I would average between 60-90 votes per post, now I am lucky to get 25. Not sure why this is but it is just a new thing for me I guess, at least I am still averaging around $15 per payout which is much more than most. I have noticed as well what I think is the reward pool draining a bit again. My 100% upvote at full power immediately after HF19 and before the whale no voting experiment stopped was worth almost $9. Now I have noticed that my 100% upvote at about 85% power is worth around $3.5-4.00, which I think can be attributed to the reward pool being spread out as well? Either way I agree with you, even if I am making less right now I think that the new direction is an overall good thing for Steemit and the right way to go.

It is very interesting and we will see over the next few weeks what it is looking like at that point. Hopefully someone can pull some stats on how much of the reward pool ultimately goes on people upvoting their own comments.

Well I know at least some of mine is going that way, though I have calmed down a lot since the hardfork first launched. It's difficult to not see it as a path to supplementing that lost income though, especially when I can upvote my own comments and make like $4 a pop, could be that the hard fork might be going in the direction of people just upvoting their own stuff to oblivion, we will see I guess!

After the hardfork people tend to vote less. I think most of them can't adjust their voting power so their voting power drops faster.
So that's the downside.

I agree it does seem like they vote less but really when it comes down to it if a person has low Steem Power it doesn't really matter anyways. Let's say their vote is worth $0.40. If they vote like crazy and their vote is only worth $0.05 what difference is it really going to make. Paying themselves an extra $0.35 each post probably isn't going to change their situation as much as showing support and upvoting others.

Yes the recent voting of all steemers has gone down rapidly.

It does appear that way.

Early days, lets see where this goes. I think your post about self voting comments was interesting, I notice it more now!

The prank one? Or the one where I called the guy a "Rat Bastard?"
