If there’s one thing that I haven’t quite mastered yet from this place, it’s how to properly manage my voting power. I have recently started down the path of utilizing the ol’ auto vote just to help as its impossible to stay on top of everything. I still manually curate and prefer to do it that way but I feel that the auto voting helps aid me in taking care of folks that I know do a good job here...when I am unable to be on.
I can’t be everywhere at once so programs like Steemauto help me out a bit. I’ve also found that since I’ve started utilizing that, I’ve over doubled the curation rewards I’m pulling in weekly. Not that it’s a huge amount, but it does add up and make a difference.
I only have a small chunk of names on my list as of the moment but will eventually add more. I’m finding myself having to constantly tweak and adjust percentages and how many times daily for specific people as I keep falling below the cutoff threshold I set for myself which is 65%VP.

This is my VP as of this very second and it’s been hovering in this realm for a while now...unable to creep up. So back to tweaking a bit so see if I can find a balance that somewhat works. It’s definitely a challenge though as I’m sure those who are using it are aware of.
I’m trying to spread the votes to a bunch of different folks. Full disclosure...I also do self vote. I know some frown upon it and my personal beliefs that if that’s all you do, it’s pretty weak. It’s also my belief that I pumped in a bunch of fiat and bought a fuck ton of Steem so I’m utilizing it to help me grow as well as helping others.
My goal is to hit Orca status here by the end of the summer. As long as prices don’t jump too much I think I can do that with obviously investing some more in along with the motivation to keep kicking ass. In turn I hope to be able to keep helping others grow as well with proper support and delegation.
While on delegation, I recently started with delegating to a handful of curation guilds and projects. It’s not a tremendous amount by any means but I’m hoping to be at 1000 SP delegated by my birthday which is less than a month away. I’m currently at 750 so not too much more to go. Won’t be an issue. Just pacing myself. I’m just trying to find projects that I enjoy, utilize, or believe in to throw a tiny bit of support their way. As I grow here, I’m hoping to make more of an impact in that department as well.
I fully encourage those of you who are somehow able to...throw a small delegation towards a project you enjoy. Hell, it can be an individual. Just somewhere that it’ll get utilized properly to reward solid content...especially if you are letting it go to waste. If you aren’t on here daily, strongly consider it. Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you should know that there are a few good projects that could definitely benefit from a little lovin’ In the delegation department at present time. Consider one of those...
Either way, there is definitely a lot to learn about how to juggle the utilization of ones VP on here. As I attempt to not only take care of those who have taken care of me and helped me grow, I also like to take care of just overall good content I find. Mostly by folks I’m unaware of. Also showing some new users the love as they need some encouragement as well. All of this I’ve been personally slacking on a bit over the past month or so but I’m getting back on track. Once I figure out a proper balance...
Anyway, this was just on my mind and I thought that I can’t be the only one struggling with this. Figured, why not pop it up here?!? Maybe start a discussion on these somewhat basic topics. If you have any tips, comments, or questions...please feel free to shoot a comment below.
Thx all.
Blewitt
Yea this is a huge struggle all the time as I see so many who I would like to upvote but I just dont have the SP yet to upvote all those who also support me. But @blewitt I am enjoying growing and being able to give more and more back, basically the way I see it we all grow if we keep on supporting each other, which is something I find many people on here still dont seem to understand about Steemit, but really a team effort goes along way here.
Absolutely!!! It's a struggle to find a proper balance and I am still trying to find it. Growing together and supporting one another is key in my opinion. Glad we are both here brother.
Delegating is also a good way to help give people you have onboarded a boost until they find their feet. Another one I like to use is the Beneficiary feature on @Steempeak.
What’s that exactly?
If you create your post via @steempeak (not sure if any other interfaces have it), you can set beneficiaries to receive a percentage of your Author Rewards for that post. For example, an account I onboarded, I set as a 20% beneficiary for posts until it reaches it's own 15SP (but will probably still give something for a while)
That is a super cool feature actually! That is helping a friend out in start up phase..sweet!
And I notice that my VP gets drained when trails start living a life of their own all of a sudden. I follow like 3 trails, would love to do more, but VP mennnn. Balance is difficult to find but getting back to about 80% would be a bad thing maybe? Or setting the border at 75%?
I haven't actually used an Auto Voter or curation trails. I probably should take some time to look into them. I guess one thing with automatic voting or blindly following trails is the risk of rewarding plagiarism or the like.

I am trying to get it to hover in between 70%-80% for me. Everyone is different but if I could do that I would be happy.
oh wow that is awesome! I will definitely look into that!!! Thanks!
I'm totally with you on voting, in an ideal world we would all have time to just manually curate..but real life dictates that some times you just can't be hunting out posts to upvote - and if your Vote Power sits for any time at 100% unused then it's basically just wasted. So autovoting with something like SteemAuto just makes sure when you can't use your Proof of Brain - at least the system which - let's face it - you tell it the accounts you know produce good content you like - so it's automatically using your proof of brain to reward the content you know you like - and often I try to go back to the posts I have autovoted on and comment on them.
Delegation is a delicate balance - it helps the groups or people you delegate to - but sucks your own upvote - which is why I end up paying out each month for delegated Steem Power - to cover the the Steem Power I delegate back out and keep my upvote reasonable - it makes no financial sense but I like supporting people and communities in any way I can.
I quite auto voting some time ago, bizarrely my autovote of a trail sometimes picks me up and votes my post for me - but other then that I keep my upvote to reward the content I like. Personally though I don't see the problem in self voting - it's your investment use it.
It's still all about people and community, and as long as you are active with both then everything is good.

Absolutely. It is just impossible to stay up on it daily every second....at least for the majority of us. I do try my best to manually curate most days even a few pieces. The autovote just helps aid me in taking care of people that I know for the most part, I would like to support.
The self voting thing can be a touchy debate. I see all points to it. For me, as much as I love this place and the people here, part of this is still a financial investment for me. I pumped funds in initially not only to help give me a leg up and aid in my "power " and "influence" here, but I know if I had some skin in the game that I would probably take it a bit more seriously. It motivates me a bit to not be lazy sometimes knowing that I have a bit riding on my success here. I self vote as it helps slowly cover my investment I pumped into it but my self vote is must a small overall fraction of the votes I give out to the community.
Keep on kicking ass. Oh, and when you get that Steem coffee deal done, lmk. My wife @reeseshara would like to buy some!!!
It's really good to rethink your VP from time to time indeed. I've recently gotten people off the autovote again since sometimes I don't like the low percentages I'm giving out and would love to just give the percentage I think the post deserves. But I've done it all: full manual, full auto... And I'm still changing habits from time to time, even after a year of being here.
I'm on your Helpie trail vote by the way which gives me 0.001 each time :') Votes are the worst for VP plus I don't feel like I have enough control over who I'm voting for. I'd rather delegate to communities I support so they can vote on all the members, plus add a random upvote myself to content within the community I value myself.
Anyway, many many ways to do things. Love that you're setting an Orca goal for yourself - I'm nowhere close to that myself :D Cheers!
Absolutely! I think you have to adjust from time to time. Especially if you are growing here and making new friends and connections. I just added you on!!! lol
Oh I am nowhere near it either but I am gunnin for it by the end of summer...or end of year. Lol. Probably should allow myself the year for this lofty goal.
Hahaha! You know, after SteemFest I have thought about just adding everyone who I spoke to/connected with... Then I started to like manual curating again. But I might just try it out for a while to see how it goes :-)
Yes, Orca is a HUGE goal, but I believe there will be a lot of sideways prices for a bit in crypto markets... So who knows. Maybe a spike to 20$, quick cash out, buy back in at 20 cents? :') One can hope...
(And thanks for the add of course!!! :D)
You have piled a load of cash into this, same as me.. I dont see a problem, but not on self-comments. Thats my line.
Exactly! I also think there is a big distinction of self voting but also voting the community and those that are blatant in upvoting all their comments and spamming just to self vote.
Also I think that if you pump some moolah into it, it IS an investment amongst other things. I would like to see a return....even if it's years from now.
I used to use auto voting and curation trails, but it's all manual these days. I found the trails were voting up some posts I didn't really want to support. I manage to use up my votes and my voting power is often lower than I really want, but I can live with that. I don't self vote. That's just my personal choice. If you have bought your Steem then you deserve a decent return and you are not abusing it.
I delegate about half my Steem. There are so many cool people and projects that can make good use of it. I can manage with less curation rewards. We each have our own strategy.
Keep on doing good stuff. We need more like you.
That is one of my bigger complaints actually. Glad you brought that up. Sometimes I will be manually browsing and curating and I will see a vote on something that I would most definitely not have supported.
Yeah I think there is a big distinction of those who contribute and support the community but also self vote their pieces, vs others who only self vote or who spam the chain to vote their own comments like crazy.
Delegating 1/2...that's impressive. In the coming months I want to make a bigger dent in my delegations. I'll look to you as inspiration friend!
We each do our own thing. Some people have bought a lot of Steem and want something back for it, but if the price can keep going up they should win anyway. It's in all our interests for Steem to do well. Short term greed does not help at all.
Wise words my friend.
There is something not every body seems to know. You can hover at a lower VP with the advantage of being able of have double, triple or quadruple amount of full votes every day. Off course they have less value but at least, you don't have to play with the percentage slider and your receiver sees a FULL vote which earns you the status of a much respected reader or fan :-)

Thank you so much for the support!!!!! Much luv to ya!
Really good info, and I didn't realize how much I don't know about delegating! I'll have to do some more research....
Yeah delegation is pretty important and a great tool to help someone grow!!! If you need any help or assistance with it, just lmk and I would be glad to help out!
Using curation trail drain your voting power, it is good to set the proper parameter in place. It is good that you start to delegate toward project your enjoy. :)

yeah curation trails totally help in depleting my power. I would like to delegate more in the coming months as well.
That is the reason I don't use them and I prefer organic vote when I read the post and give my appreciation that way. :)
Gotcha. Totally makes sense
@theluvbug and @jaynie are awesome and true assets to the community!!!
I will look into steemdunk! Appreciate al and any advice.
Yeah I have done this from time to time. Pause it to heal my power. 65% is too low but there is no way I can keep it 80%-90%. Too many mouths to feed. If I can get it between 70%-80% on average I will be a happy camper!!!
If you stay above 85% you will feed more mouths.
Make sure you are getting curation rewards and they are getting the vote value with one of the places that track that. You might be doing all the voting for nothing.
Pick 10 of your smaller votes randomly and see what you got out of it and what they got out of it.
Ultimately, my plan is to delegate half my steem power. Right now I'm delegating about 500sp. So far, I mostly delegate to dapps that I use. I haven't used autovoting in quite some time but at some point I will probably get back to that for some of my voting.
Wow that is an ambitious goal and quite noble!!!
Thank you for this articule, I have the same issue About the management of my sp thank you!!

Yeah it is a common problem. Just gotta keep tweaking until I find the right balance.
Howdy sir blewitt! I love this kind of post because it makes people think and also the comments created are really informative so great job!
