I called streemian bad when they wanted my active password, once I figured out what that was, over a year ago,...it was the first time I changed a password, and I still don't know how to get them out of my steemd front page.
It is now readily apparent how raping curation rewards is not helping the value of the platform.

Alright Big Bern, I see where you're coming from and I also despise the current reward raping process, but the way we are going about solving it is also not working. There has to be a compromise somewhere. How about talking to the people who use these autovote functions? It seems like you are addressing the symptoms rather than the source of the problem. I hate that the current autovote programs give such a huge advantage to established steemians but what solution is there to it? We need a roundtable discussion.

Hi @eaglespirit, that kind of upvoting is allowed, almost expected, otherwise they wouldn't have put that option there. 😉 the only bad thing with that, is it automatically depletes your voting power, which you may not notice or realize as it's happening.
I think what is being referred to most often, is the practice some people have (and I don't quite understand how it could work) of creating multiple steemit accounts, and having those accounts upvote your ¿main? account? then others see you being upvoted a lot, and not knowing any better, like good sheeple and come along for the ride and start upvoting as well.
You can invest your own Steem and pay to have your article put in the "Trending" category too, which will bring more votes, even though your post is crap.
That is how I understand, albeit imperfectly, what all the hoopla is about.

Upvoting/downvoting comments is fine too, it's part of the system. Every time you upvote or downvote, your voting power is reduced. It replenishes at a rate of 20% per day.

I don't think so. Isn't it natural for folks to be naturally biased towards their own material? Would that not make this practice counterintuitive towards content quality which would invariably affect the perceived value of the platform. If an author believes that their content adds value to the block chain, is all this self-voting and vote buying really necessary?
The self-voting has been an endless debate. There are pros and cons. In my view, when authors spend time researching, creating and writing content, they should have the right to upvote it, and that's what the platform allows them to do, so why not do it? Of course, if they chose not to do it, it's their prerogative. Naturally, if self-upvoting is done in an abusive an repetitive manner, other users have the option to downvote.
It will continue to be so until something changes. I'm afraid flagging is not enough for this problem.
Unfortunately, it is a mechanism that is indiscriminate towards any of the criteria you noted and there are not enough people flagging the problem of content that is overvalued due to excessive vote buying and self voting. It's just the nature of the beast right now.

Who your friends are brings you awards since they may gift you or vote for you. Are people even reading the content of a post or just voting because it a friend ring? I’m still tryin to grasp terms like whale, etc. Also, I see people posting photos: one of a “17 year old girl” if that’s really her account, a guy who posted a hospital photo of his mother dying and a girl who shows her A$$, and then they ask for upvotes? All Looks suspicious to me! Then I’ve read posts of people talking down to others yet they’re guilty of saying “follow me.” In my first week on steemit I’m finding quite a bit of hypocrisy. Just a newbie here trying to find the real people that want to contribute, write positive content, and survive the Apocalypse ... 🙋🏽♀️

Self-voting should be encouraged. Do you see any other benefits of holding Steem Power? Who is going to buy Steem and power it up just so they can be generous and reward others and not themselves? Nobody in crypto!
I disagree with that, it should be based on contribution. People tend to overestimate their contribution and will thus over-self vote themselves. But the spamming behavior of most people getting an @freedom delegation should be frowned upon.
I think everyone should get more critical and use the downvote about 10% of the time. (this is the ratio of up/down votes on Reddit. (with much less direct financial incentives)
A solution that is being looked at is to have a separate downvoting power of smaller size (1/10) that is independent from upvoting.

The difference is that I make an average of $5 or so for my contributions... Which is 10x less than michelle's average.
I don't know, I do like the fact that people can support you and also reward you for your contributions a lot... But it's a bit weird when 1 person is practically giving you ~$50 or so on each post you make, when those votes makes up for more than 80% of your total income.
That's not what is weird. What is weird is when the person benefiting from all that support from one person complains about one person downvoting them being unfair.

So is upvoting your own post considered negative by the community( obviously yes at last by a part of it ) but why have that option in the system then? I don't think that upvoting your own post is necessarily negative, especially when you're a user with not very much influence but in the case of this post and what's being discussed, it is a husband who has a powerful account upvoting his wife's posts or allowing his wife to use his account to do it herself which results in them getting a large monetary reward which doesn't necessarily reflect the quality of the posts or their unbiased reception by the wider community. At least that is what I understand by all of this, however I could be wrong.
Wow, this post answers a lot of questions I had.
When I started using my Steemit account after a few months absence I saw some posts talking about the downvoting of @michelle.gent's posts and I wondered what was going on.
She said that her many fans had followed her over to Steemit and were spending their own money on Steem and claimed that this was how she got the upvotes and that the downvotes were vicious and unfair. Nowhere was it mentioned that self voting from a whale account was being used to ensure a hefty portion of the reward pool and to give an unfair advantage in relation to writers who aren't sexually involved with whale accounts.
Having been on Steemit for longer than five minutes now and having read the other side of the argument in this post, I'm a bit annoyed.
I personally put hours into writing and drawing original content exclusive to Steemit and I don't even get so much as a "Good post" comment, so I don't know if people have read my posts and liked them, or what they think. I do consider it a bit of a p*sstake to read that someone was cutting and pasting their previously published book to this site getting her husband to upvote it, whinging in numerous posts when it gets downvoted and also lying through omission and claiming that her fans, from when it was previously published as an ebook are the ones upvoting it.
Now thinking of this objectively, I know that the claims of votes by previous fans is a lie because:
1)If you self publish a book on Amazon for example, you agree to make them aware if it is available elsewhere, so you can't really make it available on Steemit and sell it on Amazon. Why would someone who was successfully making an income on Amazon enough to have fans who would sign up and pay for Steemit basically make their books available for a set of one off payments and then free for the rest of eternity, because the content can't be deleted?
2)When a book is published on Amazon the writer gets paid not only for actual sales but also for pageviews on Kindle Unlimited via a monthly community pool, so again if the fans were there why would you need or want to receive a very limited reward from Steemit for previously published works? You wouldn't.
Actually I think that a lot of creators leave Steemit because of this undeserved domination of the certain tags and other manipulation of the platform, because a lot of people come here thinking that this site will be different to the crap seen on other sites and then it turns out to be just the same.
