I'm okay for now with my backup food supply of beans and could even heat them using my trusty magnesium fire-starter. My being unarmed, though, is the deciding factor in leaving this dude alone. He might just shoot me for waking him up if he's got a weapon. Trying to choke him is more likely to get me killed by falling from the tree.

Mouse mode seems prudent in this situation, so I'm going with Option 2.
