As Steemit continues it's rapid growth, plagiarism is becoming a big issue.
I've seen so many people try to get away with stealing content. Just the other day, someone copied one of my posts nearly verbatim.
Fortunately the flagging/down voting system does work and the community seems to be self-regulating to a large degree. The offending post was down voted out of existence.
But I know that we're not catching everything. And so far, our efforts have largely been focused on plagiarized text. It seems so obvious, but I'll say it: you can't just copy and paste someone else's work and you can't just use any old image you find around the web.
Most images are copyrighted, and when you use a copyrighted image without permission, you are "stealing" from the content creator.
But there are a ton of great places to source images for your posts for free if you know where to look!
1) Canva:
Canva is a great place to start because not only do they have tons of free images and photos you can use, but it's also a fully fledged image editor. It's almost like a drag and drop Photoshop. You can make incredible digital works without knowing a thing about design. It's completely free to use and if you find a photo that you want to use that isn't free, they only cost $1 each.
2) Google Image Search Filtered by Usage Rights:
You can't just grab any photo you like off Google Images, but after you search, if you click the button that says "Search Tools" then "Usage Rights" then "Labeled for Reuse" (or "Labeled for Reuse with Modification" depending on your needs) all of the search results are fair game. Just make sure to the attribution requirements. Always give credit when required.
3) Pixabay:
Pixabay is an easy to use royalty free, attribution free photo site. You can search and download any of the images up to a certain resolution without signing up. But if you want the full resolution file of an image, you have to create a free account.
4) Picography:
Picography allows you to easily download high-resolution images that you are free to use however you like. It has a minimalist design and is incredibly easy to use. Has a great selection of photos as well.
5) Pexels:
Pexels is another fantastic resource for wonderful high-resolution photos. You can use any of the photos from their wonderful collection however you see fit.
6) Stockup:
Stockup is somewhat unique among this list as it searches across 27 different free stock photo websites. It has a massive collection of 13,543 images. It's also very easy to use and navigate.
7) Foodies Feed:
Foodies Feed won't be a great choice for everyone, but if you blog about food in any way, shape, or form, there are over a thousand high resolution food photographs you can use for free!
8) Public Domain Archive:
A huge selection of modern and vintage public domain images with new photos added every week. It's a great resource to bookmark for all of your photo needs.
9) Splashbase:
In addition to a wonderful selection of free high resolution images, Splashbase also has a great selection of royalty videos you can use as well! It's easy to use too.
10) Unsplash:
Unsplash has a collection of mind blowing high resolution images worthy of National Geographic. And you are free to use any of the photos however you wish. You'll definitely want to check this one out!
The quality of the photos on Unsplash are unbelievable.
11) Giphy:
Giphy is your goto resource for all things animated GIFs! You can search through thousands of animated GIFs and even create your own if that's what you want to do. The GIFs will animate within your Steemit post, but not on the trending page. Keep this in mind.
12) Meme Generator:
Meme Generator is your one stop shop for memes. You can search their massive collection of sharable memes or create one of your own with any of the images.
13) Flat Icon:
Not everyone will need this, but it's a good resource to have bookmarked, especially if you know your way around Photoshop/Illustrator. Flat Icon offers 189,920 free vector icons for you to use in any of your designs!
Also remember all government photos are in the public domain and NASA has a ton of really good ones for you science guys
Good call! I would have never considered that.
considered what curiously . im new to steemit, trying to build abase,by the way im eric
Yes, NASA does have some spectacular photos. With a bit of imagination, some of them can even be adapted to non-science topics.
Research papers published on PubMed sometimes include unexpected treasures, Creative Commons licensed still images and even videos. Details: http://info.hsls.pitt.edu/updatereport/?p=5136
NOTE: Unfortunately, images produced by outside contractors are sometimes NOT in the public domain.
Good to know cheers!!
There are several I hadn't heard about on this list. Pixabay has some really good images, I've used them before. Thanks for the tips!
No problem! The one I was blown away by the most was Unsplash. The photos are out of this world. Hard to believe they are free to use. They would be right at home in a magazine.
Agreed, I'm looking through Unsplash now. Great stuff
Wow this post really helps, Thank you ^_^
Truly a valuable resource. This will get me off on the right foot and any web developer will appreciate everyone's input.
Great post!
Thank you so much!
Lots of great information. Thank you so much. I am well aware of Plagerizam. As a Graphic Artist for more than 31 years, I have worked for many companies regarding copyright. Thanks again.
I recommend using pixbay.com . This is very nice site with very nice images and anybody can use it depending on the photo' attribute. By the way thanks for sharing this post @mindover. I was also thinking of sharing post like this. Cool.
I've used Pixabay forever and it did make the list, but some of these other free sites blow it out of the water.
YEP
Thanks for the great info. I am a wordsmith and not very good at visual art. I generally opt for no graphics because I don't want to steal others pictures and this will help me to find relevant photos that are free to use.
I know what you mean. But it's always a good idea to have at least one picture to make your posts stand out on the posts feed!
Hope it is alright to follow you .scanned post heard you where a wordsmith. Are they any KIND TO THE SMITHS. Sike, just kidding im new and have alot of ideas...building. is whats the plan .follow me back.. the future ..

You're welcome!
Amazing post! Thank you for the helpful information!
You're welcome @ericvancewalton! And make sure you check out http://unsplash.com - The images are worthy of national geographic. It's crazy that they're free to use.
las imagenes se pueden usar sin tener que citar la fuente ?
Si son de dominio público, no tienes que citar la fuente: https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominio_p%C3%BAblico

You're very welcome!
I really love this post! so useful! :-)
So glad! Thanks @coinbitgold!
Hay really stake . the name. IM NEW ,BITold is it ok to follow
This morning I emailed a NYC blogger/photographer and asked her if I can use one of her photos for part 2 of my Bronx series if I credit her and she said yes, let me know when you publish it and I'll tweet it! FUN 😁
Great idea! We can always ask for permission when an image is copyrighted.
Awesome post, just wanna add anything under fair use or fair dealings allows the user to use copyright shit as long as it falls under those categories.
Good point!
Excellent share!
Thanks @dan5!
KEEPER POST! Thanks so much for these new ones I have missed! NY Public Library has this that's helpful too https://www.nypl.org/research/collections/digital-collections/public-domain
Are you sure it's ok to use giphy.com? I sent an email about this and have not hear anything back yet.
And here's another one that i use often: http://gratisography.com/
@stellabelle, I thought they were fair use, but maybe there not? Let me know if you hear back. And thanks for the link! Hadn't heard of that one before.
Hear, hear! Wonder if Steemit will eventually add some sort of special flag designation for plagiarism - or maybe the community will continue to just take care of it on our own. Glad you included Canva on your list - it's a godsend. Picmonkey is also good for editing. Another I use daily is 123rf.com - you can get images for less than $1 each there. Thanks for this post.
Great suggestions! Thanks @steemitpatina!
And here I am, drawing my own pictures like some kind of savage.
LOL. I wish I could draw/illustrate my own images.
This post has been linked to from another place on Steem.

Thanks for this post. Super handy!
This was very helpful to add to my list of photo resources, as most of my posts are word pictures. Thank you.
Thanks for the info! I will be sure to use this guide in all of my future posts.
Hi, I'm newbie here and found your posting very helpful.
I'd like to translate it and post in my native language Korean, if you give me permission. :)
Great post buddy! :]
Nice post! I use freeimages.com sometimes too, but pixabay and google images re-use search are probably the best. I posted an article yesterday on stock photography and race. Would love to get your feedback!
@catherinegairard mira, para contenido de imágenes 🌞
Thanks for this
oh thanks! I only had 3 or 4 from your list :) I allways need free good images as I create websites! Thanks again!
@mindover, this is an awesome post. Thank you very much
Very good article! Details and Explanatory.
If you agree with me upvote me by clicking the (>) button by the side of the $ sign.
Another good website with free graphics under creative commons is thenounproject. They host tons of user created icons, no images, so may be a bit niche but it's an awesome website.

Excellent post. "The first step in the evolution of ethics is a sense of solidarity with other human beings." - Albert Schweitzer
Thank you @mindover for this reference page. This is useful for a newbie like me. Upvoted and followed.
Thanks
Thanks for taking the time to write this article. It was very useful. I'm new here, but I'm already loving the community's regard for original content. I strongly believe that the more we foster this culture, the better steemit will do in the long run. Thanks again.
Upvoted and followed.
Thanks! Very useful!!!
Thank you very much for collecting these
Found this via the FAQ's. Brilliant resource, thanks.
This post is absolutely brilliant, thank you! I use all my own images for everything I do, and it drives me completely nuts seeing other creatives' work being used without permission or acknowledgement online: I get that some images are just so wonderful people can't help but share them, but if the originator of that work isn't credited with producing or capturing and developing it, it just feels wrong to me. So many people don't even attempt to find out who the artist or photographer is, and 9 times out of 10, it's a creative who either DID want to be credited or actively didn't want other people using their work at all. (And don't even get me started with memes where people have deliberately cropped off the copyright or watermark before sharing it, thereby giving a ton of people the idea that it's their original content. Maybe there's something wired oddly in my brain, but that just pisses me off to an extent that it's not even funny. Even typing this I'm starting to hyperventilate, lol - I can feel the George Carlin in me rising ;o))
So...if you don't mind, I will bookmark this post and point people at it when I see that kind of behaviour going on because you've put together a valuable resource to point people in the direction of doing it the right and honourable way. I don't see an option to reSteem this post, so I might even write a post on the subject at some point and link to it, too, if you don't mind. I'd appreciate it if you'd consider that and let me know whether or not that would be OK with you, please?
Thanks again - truly awesome content!
Hey man! I just wanna say thank you for taking the time to make guides like this for minnows like me!
This is all really useful, especially the bit about how to filter a Google search - it was always there but I just never noticed it!
I'm one of those fervent libertarian types with misgivings about copyright law, but I still consider plagiarism in very, very bad taste, so I try not to indulge in it. But I am also an artist, constantly on the lookout for good reference images, and I absolutely do not want to copy directly from photos not in the public domain.
So thanks for a useful post!
Great resources. Thanks for sharing them.
This post is very useful, not just for Steemians; but also for college students, who often risk plagiarism/copyright charges due to the careless use of certain images.
Now,I shared this information to everyone.
Thank you for help.
Because I try to search this types of site where images are used commercially.
So, again thank you @mindover
Thanks a lot @mindover. A very useful resource for a new Steemian!
