As for the rest, spot on...it really doesn't take long here to realize what is and isn't proper etiquette.
From my personal experience, I highly recommend interacting with people.... That interaction can payout 10 fold and allow you to build some relationships that can definitely support you in the long scheme of things. It's not that I don't want to check out your newest post, but for Christ sakes tell me a lil about yourself first, give me a reason to want to check out your profile and content.

Unfortunately this is true..at least in the short term. Those without the slider bars will probably burn their votes quick and ideally be a little more conscientious of where they are used.
