i have used the normal markdown in all other posts and never had an issue...so maybe they have changed the format on steemit?
Let's try this: in the comment below give me the link to the image you try do use and I'll check if it works for me.
EDIT: right now your thumbnail works fine: your post is displayed correctly and has a thumbnail.
