Steem Cartoon : Cartoon Waterfall Concept

To be a good digital artist, one needs to have a good understanding of the colours. The imagination of each location must be good and there are times when each illustration that we create may not have its reference. Furthermore, the location that we now sketch is in the form of a cartoon. For this posing, I will share a bit of my method in painting the nature where I will cartoon it better by improving on the colouring technique and the my personal style of brush.

step 1.jpg

Usually before I start on an illustration, I will use rough speed painting to find the idea, mood and its surround. To me it is a note to myself before moving to the actual painting. You will notice it from the brush that I use. Normally I will use a rough brush so that the result will look more sketchy.

step 2.jpg

After the completion, I will get more information about the colour that I will be using.

step 3.jpg

This is my second speed paint whereby I will try to play with the composition of the other subjects.

step 4.jpg

Every speed painting will take me approximately 30 minutes to complete.

step 5.jpg

From the speed painting I will try to create more details. I will start with flat colour. Here the work of choosing the colour is easier because I have information of the colour palette that I will be using.

step 6.jpg

This process is more towards texturing each type of plants.

step 7.jpg

This is the part where I introduce shadow and lighting. Here I will use the blue colour for a cold shadow and olive green for hot shadow.

step 8.jpg

This is the final process where I will focus more on the foreground. The part where I will detail so that the simple texture will look more cartoonish.

step 9.jpg

I will include some cartoon characters to get the maximum effect.

I hope that this will help you understand how a background artist like myself create a background in decent speed.

I love it man. Your paintings of nature are always amazing.

Nature is one of my self-therapy.Thank you, so much bro.Great to have your support :)

Loving your style man!

Thank you mate, for appreciating! 😊

I really like the color choices you make. It always has a nice matching scheme. Even the initial colors you sketch with remain the same, probably because of your experience. With real paints it is easy to mix to get the right pigment. Any tips on making good initial color decisions in digital?

I think @creativetruth, you ask a very good question. for a good choice of colour there are a few theories that we can fall back to. For me, I tr to understand the basic of colouring. When I choose my colour, I will take the medium range of colours. This is to make my job in controlling the temperature of the colour on the pigment. To increase the pigment colour I will use overlay and this is to increase the speed of the entire process. I do a quick post mortem on my earlier painting:-

  1. To get the medium range of colour I use those within the range of the red line in pic 1.
  2. Then I reduce the opacity to 20% to obtain a balance to the blue colour. You can use the reference in pic 1.
  3. You can start to blend the colour by using a brush on a normal layer with 100% opacity. -
  4. It is important to increase the pigment colour. I will use the overlay to increase the temperature of the colour.
  5. For the shadow, I use the darkblue with opacity set at 70%.

Wow really in depth. I'll have to study this more, and try messing around with an overlay layer, now that I know what it's for.

It has been my pleasure to help you out! :)✌️
