How does author reputation affect the Payouts on Posts & Comments and are there any trends, particularly since HF19?
I have extracted data since the 1st of June to look at the effects of HF 19. The data for these graphs is from steemdata.com by @furion
Post Payouts
The Colours represent the reputation of the post authors and the vertical axis is the Post Reward.
It has always been the case that higher rep authors earn more for their posts. You would expect this as they have probably spent the longest on the platform, and have built up a lot of followers. They are also likely to have more Steem Power in their voting circle. But how has the distribution of payouts changed over the last few weeks, particularly in the context of HF19?
- We can see more Red and Green appearing on the right which means lower rep authors are getting more for their posts.
- The downward trend in the purple dots is driven by the Steem Price.
Comment Rewards
The Colours in this second graph represent the reputation of the author making the comment and the vertical axis is the Comment Reward.
The only trend I can see from this graph is the decline in the amounts for comments in July. This is consistent with some analysis I made a few days ago. It is also worth nothing that the reputation of the authors is fairly widely dispersed which is what you would expect. There is no clear trend of high rep authors upvoting their own posts for example.

my reputation is 41 and only get 1 cent when i up vote something, watch
Hi Niall, Since HF19 your vote is noticable, it was hardly noticeable before that I am sure. 1 cent doesnt seem like a lot but the way I look at it is it is infinitely more than you get when you vote on other social media. With time I am sure it will build up for you.
In the early days you needed something like 1000SP to give a cent with a vote. At least the minnows have some impact now.
agree, i get 1 cent upvote and i only have 450 sp, and i think my vote value will increase if steem price raise...

It's taken me most of a year to get here. Taking almost as long to get to 70
i must admit I got to 41 within about 1 and a week and a half. 42 been here about 2 months now.

If HF20 leads to a flood of new users, there is potential for quite different patterns to emerge. It will be an interesting one to watch. A lot of this is driven by the price of Steem too. Higher Steem Price means more people will be likely to post.
I think the big takeaway from the second graph is comment payouts have returned to normal.
After the hardfork, comment payouts increased rapidly when people were playing with their new found voting power. This has clearly equalized to what is favored economically.
As I always say, the race to Nash is futile. The incentive structures in steem are still strong.
When their is any change there will be a bit of time till it stabilises but it seems to be back to a more normal level. There is quite a bit more detail on the actual levels in the linked post if your interested

I think what happened there was there was some other person voting at the same time as you when you voted for my post. It jumped but your vote should add practically the same amount for a post and for a comment.

The reputation system does a pretty good job at punishing spammers, plagiarisers etc. and this data shows that having a good rep score pays off.
That is a very good point. You won't last long here if you lose your reputation.

After the HF19, my upvotes were worth over 40 cents and now they are barely worth 4 cents. Did this have something to do with what I chose to vote on? Was there documentation explaining how upvote value would be impacted based on voting choices after HF19?
What your upvotes are worth isn't impacted by what you vote on. What determines what your vote is worth is
There is basically a daily fund of Steem that your direct to a post when you vote. If you have more Steem Power your vote is worth more. It's a bit complicated as its a fund that builds up over 7 days.
After HF19 there was a major adjustment to the voting mechanism on Steemit and it has taken a while to stabilise but signs are that we are getting to a more stable level now.

Interesting graph, we could say that HF19 do brought a little bit more "equality"...
Although there is a direct and obvious relation beetwen reputation and steempower, the high payout are related to the high steempower and not to the reputation...
Payouts are directly related to the steem power of who votes for you. It is interesting to look and see are high steem power holders voting for themselves and milking the system or not.
It is obvious that SP holders will vote for themselves, it is only logical... If they milk the system or not, i dont know, the thing is that people is called to buy steem to get more reward and influence...

Getting reputation is about getting votes. If people with higher reputation vote for one of your posts your reputation increases. So the best advice is to post some good quality content, and comments and you will get your reputation going.

Hi eroche just two quick questions. If I upvote your post by 8c you get the full 8c.
Q1: How much do you get if I upvote your comment by 8c?
Q2: How much do you get if you upvote your own comment by lets say 8c?
It's a question I have been asking myself for a while now and not sure of the answer.
Payouts are divided between authors and curators. 75% to Authors and 25% to curators. If you upvote my post by 8 cents I will get 6 cents and the curators will get 2 cents. Depending on when you vote I may or may not get some of the curation reward. As far as I know it works the same for posts and comments but I stand to be corrected on that one.
Thanks for your reply eroche. I suppose the benefit to upvoting someones comment is it is partly good for their reputation score. So in conclusion maybe both have equal benefit to the recipient overall. Sorry my mistake as you get at least 6c of the 8c for me upvoting your post.

Thanks @paulag, it can be hard to make money at first on steemit but since HF19 it seems more attainable for the masses.
I've seen some user with minus reputation. will they be able to vote? Does it have any impact.. ? Any idea?
Before HF19 I was securing regular payouts which were generous. However, after the initial reward jump on implementation of HF19 my rewards have been significantly lower. I know that Steem has taken a dive lately but it still seems odd and very frustrating that I can not achieve the same level of payout pre-HF19. Is there much we can do about that?
