Steem - Get to Know the Witnesses (Part 3)

in #stats7 years ago (edited)

Witnesses secure the Steem Blockchain. It's an important role and each and every account holder gets 30 Witness Votes. These votes elect the Witnesses that get trusted with the job.

I began a short series a few days ago, Steem - Get to Know the Witnesses. In this series I an analysing the digital footprint of the witnesses to get to know them a bit better and help inform my witness vote. I welcome discussion during this series and I hope it raises awareness of who we are electing to manage the Steem Blockchain.

There may be different philosophical reasons in the community for choosing witnesses and this analysis (and my choices) are not intended to judge right or wrong but I wish to inform the community what the different witnesses have written about, what they stand for and how active they are in the community.

Furthermore this discussion is not intended to be technical in nature but will instead look at some Graphics and Stats to help us get to know our witnesses, especially the top 20.

Interests

Some of the witnesses develop great apps and platforms for the Steem blockchain. As pointed out yesterday by @richq11; witnesses such as @ausbitbank spend time developing steemviz and @jesta develops steemstats which enriches the community.

I frequently see witnesses volunteering time help people out on Steemit.chat or over on discord. There is no metric that can capture all this activity but we can get to know what witnesses write about on Steemit by looking at the tags they tag their posts with.

So What Tags do each of the top 20 witnesses use?

  • Per Witness, tags in red shows lower frequency of occurrence. Brighter colours show higher frequency of occurrence.

Thanks for reading, I feel like I am getting to know the Witnesses a bit better with this series. Join me again next week as I continue my analysis ...

Ahh the latest ! Ive been really enjoying reading the fruits of your deep research. Too few people bother with their witness votes ( though i think 30 is far too many) and many of these witnesses never post.
Hopefully now we know a little more about these mysterious yet critical beings, more people might be encouraged to cast a vote
Best wishes to you :-)

What a quality blog series, I could spend hours looking at these! Really important we all get to know the witnesses and so will be resteeming. Cheers

So it is important for users to vote for witnesses and know their witnesses before they vote.

For a newbie, that's another term to understand. Obviously, one will reach at this stage only after he has mastered what it means to have SP, Steem, and SBD :D

Yes, you are welcome

Thank you for the very useful information for us who have given us the opportunity to join @erohce Next day and information.

So from the graph above does it mean that @curie talks about himself/herself an awful lot? ;)

Thank you for this @eroche. I actually have only one witness vote since I didnt know the others but with your chart I think Im having one more. Just keep posting my friend you are helping us! 😄

I'd be interested to see part 2 and part 3 for the top 20 to 50 if you ever feel like it.

Ill definitely get to that this week.

I have gotten sidetracked analysing the votes for individual witnesses which I will post about tomorrow. What took me in that direction was a quick look at Steemreports http://steemreports.com/witnesses/ There are a few very big hitters in there voting for witnesses. This makes up a huge proportion of the votes for the top guys. I think after I decide who to vote for I'll have another series for witnesses to help them see who to seek votes from. I am sure there is a lot of potential there for lobbying certain big voters who haven't updated their witness votes in a while.

Getting back to my analysis for helping me decide who to vote for I agree getting to know the witnesses using analysis similar to Part 2 and Part 3 for the next 30 will be interesting. Ill run that off and see what they have been up to, the only issue with it will be that it will probably be very skewed due to the fact the next grouping will have come on board at various times. The top 20 all started out around as witnesses around the same time so its a more meaningful comparison, but Ill run the numbers and see what it looks like.

Thanks for stopping by.
