RE: Junk Is In The Eye Of The Beholder (And You Could Be Holdin' My Junk!)

in #ssg-community6 years ago

I dig that junk in the trunk 😉

But seriously though
I never understood why old USA coins are called Junk Silver. If anything you’d think there should be a premium. I’m new to the metal market talk so don’t mind me if I sound foolish
But yea when I think of junk silver I think old rusted bars or something not coinage!
Is it because they are only 90% Silver maybe not .999 ??
That kinda makes a lil sense I guess but yea my mind doesn’t go to coinage!

Sort:

Yes, it is because there is an alloy in them. When they stopped minting silver coins they made a big fuss about how they would NEVER be rare, so do not worry your silly head about collecting them... I suspect the use of "junk" was cooked up in some dark room by PR people to try to prevent all the coins from disappearing overnight. If you have never read the speech Lyndon Johnson gave when he pulled the coins, it is pretty interesting. http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/?pid=27108

Oh yea I heard about that speech. I’m
Gonna watch right now😀
Thanks ❤️

"Junk" silver is like "junk" in the trunk. It's a good thing. :)
It's nothing like "junk" addiction (heroin), or "junk" in the attic.
So hang on to your junk (silver). It may not be "fine" (like your "trunk"), but it's silver, and that's a beautiful thing.
