Humans have this tendency never to accept blames or try as much to push it. Jose Mourinho; Manchester United's coach is a smart man. He is anticipating a tough season too, he is not convinced about this team too, and he knows the press, added to the fans won't go easy on him. He is a smart man and he knows this.
I wrote about Manchester United not impressing and how disaster looms few days ago, you can read it here. Everyone seem to lose every sense of optimism for the coming season.
Seeing Liverpool strengthening, Manchester City looking stronger, and Arsenal with a new coach with quite a good number of additions, he is getting scared. He knew he cannot match these teams anymore. No more patching, he knows the season is long and he is scared.
His frustration is understandable, as it is very annoying to have your rivals strengthen and yet your own targets are not being delivered. You can understand the board of directors too for not willing to splash the cash, seeing how over $400 million has been spent so far, if not more, yet they are still struggling to win games. The board claimed most of the players he is gunning for are either close to 30 years, or little months over 30 years, not even talking about the ridiculous price for these players. Everyone would definitely want to fight and stake their rights.
Mourinho is smart. He is anticipating the troubles and backlash from media houses and fans and that was why he went on record, after Liverpool's thrashing of his team, to state he asked for 5 players from the board and he has not received them yet. He said he would be lucky to have 2, but if only 1 came, he wouldn't mind and if none came finally, "We will keep fighting till the end of the season". Sounds familiar? He said this same line last season when he was expecting Ivan Perisic and the deal fell through.
Mourinho is already planning who to channel his frustrations to when the season kicks off. On this matter, it is hard to take sides; either the board or Mourinho. They both have legit reasons for what they are saying but his post match interview stating his team has no chance to compete for this title (which is right), has set the tune for the rest of the season.
A lot would say, "It is just pre-season". Yes, it is, but this sets the tone for the season ahead in terms of quality, attitude and game play. For this season too, i am not optimistic at all and Mourinho isn't too. He is a smart man by going on record to defect the pending blame. I can remember Sir Alex winning the title with less quality players. It not so much in the players, but in his game plans. He needs to evolve and change his style of play. We have quality players, better than two teams combined yet the team still struggle. If he really needs to buy, let him allow players he doesn't to go and have proper discussion again with the board. The window is closing soon.
