The Champions League was born mainly for sporting factors, as in response to an article in the Daily Mail, where it was stated that Wolverhampton was the best team in the world.
Thus the French daily L’Equipe proposes a championship to the FIFA and UEFA among the winners of the various European championships.
The leaders of the associations are not enthusiastic, not thinking about the billionaire business that would have reserved such a competition.
L’Equipe however was going ahead with his idea, trying to organize the tournament privately with European clubs.
As soon as FIFA learned of this, he ordered UEFA to organize the tournament.
Fearing that this competition obscures the national championships, UEFA limits the project by accepting only one company per country.
The European Champions Cup was born in 1955.
The event, although limited, has enormous success.
The first year the competition is won by Real Madrid, and the next year 5 more nations participated.
Since then, the Champions League business is growing more and more, with the televisions of every nation paying millions to have the rights to the matches.
Even in the cities where the league was held there was a sensational economic return, and over the years it has grown more and more.
To date, the turnover for the UEFA Champions League is over € 1 billion a year, incredible if you think it's just a sports tournament.
