Polo is the oldest sport known to man and was formerly known as “Shangir”.
Polo is a sport played on horseback between two teams of four players, each using a racket with flexible long handles to hit a wooden ball in a grass field and between two goal posts.
By the 16th century, sport was established in India by Emperor Babur
It has long been popular in China and Japan before its popularity waned in the West's contact with these countries
In the 18th century, British sailors discovered polo in Manipur, on the Indian border with Burma, and then founded the world's first polo club in Silchar, west of Manipur.
Other clubs were soon established. The oldest and still active club is Calcutta, founded in 1862.
