(Series) Korean Sports cars you've never knew before (1) -Hyundai SCOUPE

in #sportscar7 years ago

Korea has relatively short history in vehicle industry and due to it, most models were family sedan
However, there were still desires in young people to own something different, something sporty, something that can quench their thirst in speed

As per their demands, Hyundai decided to release their first Sports 'Fashion' Car SCOUPE (Pronounced as "Scoop" instead of "S-Coupe") Which meant Hyundai Sports COUPE

Hyundai SCOUPE was released on 1990 Feb 20, it was very first coupe vehicle ever made in Korea and also was the first 'Sports Car' even though still has many controversies

Specs
Front-wheel drive
Mitsubishi Orion MPI Engine 1.5L
97 Hp
0-60: 12.1 Second
Top Speed: 108 mph

Hyundai didn't have enough skills to produce their own engine, so they've used Mitsubishi's Orion engine on Scoupe, which did not provide enough horsepower to call it 'Sports car'

But regardless of its internal specs, outer design(especially being a coupe & point on hidden c-pillar) was enough to attract young drivers

Which led to its infamousity of top rated car for accident until...(yup going to cover this on next post)

On 1991, Hyundai released 'Scoupe Alpha' which replaced engine from Mitsubishi Orion to Hyundai Alpha Engine(Also the first engine produced by Hyundai with their own technology), and on same year also released 'Scoupe Turbo' with turbocharger installed

Spec for Scoupe Turbo
Front-wheel drive
Hyundai Alpha Engine 1.5L
115 Hp
0-60: 9.8 Second
Top Speed: 127 mph

Now began to look like real sports car until... Hyundai found out intercooler was necessary for Turbocharged cars
It's been told that it wasn't difficult to see Scoupe owners with hoods open on highway for cooling their engines

Scoupe received facelift on June 1992 changing it's design more roundly and ended it's lifecycle on April 1996

What happened on April 1996? Let's find out on next series of this post

Until then, Seeya
