Rafael Nadal is in the quarterfinals of the US Open after his victory in three rounds on Monday against Alexandr Dolgopolov (6-2, 6-4, 6-1). The Spaniard is no more than a success of a potential half of Gala against Roger Federer.
For the first time since 2013, year of his second title at Flushing Meadows, Rafael Nadal is in the quarterfinals of the US Open. On Monday, Majorcan (31 years old, 1st) dominated Alexandr Dolgopolov (28 years, 64th), swept in three rounds (6-2, 6-4, 6-1, 1h40). On Wednesday, Nadal will meet Andrey Rublev, David Goffin's tumble, before a possible electric half and expected against his great rival, Roger Federer.
We were worried about the delicate spells of the Spaniard since the beginning of the fortnight, especially with these first two sets abandoned to Taro Daniel then Leonardo Mayer, his difficulties, also, to the raise, especially in forehand. For his fourth game in this US Open, the third in the middle of the day (a single "night session"), Rafael Nadal made a very clean copy, which looks like a ramp-up. It looks like, on the other side of the net, Dolgopolov, Berdych's slaughterer in the second round, made it easier for him, by not being as formidable as he sometimes knows how to be, in his good days against his opponent).
Alexandr Dolgopolov was not in a big day
For his third round in the Grand Slam, the Ukrainian has accumulated the errors of the bottom (39 direct faults to 11), raising his cursor of aggressiveness in the second act, without success. A double fault and then a long straight stroke ideally launched Nadal (2-1, break on his first opportunity, he had waited for the 14th against Mayer), which then gradually released. The sixth game of the game was decisive, the Spaniard erasing two balls of 3-3 to keep his lead and, two games later, topple in head (6-2).
Never worried about his commitment (12 points lost in total), Rafael Nadal was able to accelerate at the opportune moment, to 4-4 in the second set (winning return, big defense), to serve in the stride for the winning of the sleeve. A game won white and concluded an ace (6-4). The third act was a formality, with a resigned Dolgopolov and who did not try much to reverse the course of the match. He gave up his entry service, on an umpteenth setback in the net, and let Nadal slip to a fiftieth success at Flushing Meadows. The last three times that the Majorcan was up to quarterbacks in New York, he always rallied the final on the weekend (2010, 2011, 2013): bis repetita this Sunday?
