First College Football Weekend Wrap Up

The first actual college football Saturday just happened yesterday and now it is time for the biggest takeaways, disappointments, and results. so lets get into it

Disappointments

First lets start with the teams, players and coaches who did not perform nearly how they should have.

Sam Darnold and USC

The #4 ranked team in the nation, the USC Trojans had some trouble against Western Michigan. Let me put it this way they did not look like the #4 team in the nation. Western Michigan which is in the MAC conference, played one hell of a game. While most of  the USC team's head was in the gutter. Heisman contender Sam Darnold did not play his best at all, he just played ok. The only reason USC won in the end was because of their two running backs Ronald Jones II and freshman Stephen Carr who combined had 5 touchdowns. USC was able to scrape by Western Michigan in the 4th quarter because of these two runninbacks. The final score was USC 49 Western Michigan 31. USC should lose their #4 ranking after their slightly embarrassing first half performance at home and Sam Darnold needs to play better if he wants to win a Heisman.

Matt Rhule and Baylor

Baylor's new coach Matt Rhule who was the coach at Temple who had a 10 win season last year. Rhule's first game as Baylor's head coach ended up as a loss to FCS school Liberty. You need to give grace on a coaches first season but it was slightly disappointing to watch a lower division team to overpower a powerhouse program like Baylor. Liberty's quarterback threw for 447 yards and 3 touchdowns. This was Liberty's first win over a power five conference school ever. Mark Rhule and Baylor didn't play bad they just need to work hard if they expect to survive the Big12 Conference this year.

Nice Surprises

Now to some of the teams that did unexpectedly great

Maryland

Maryland a Big 10 team with not a huge amount of success in the world of football has beaten #23 Texas. Maryland had never beaten a ranked opponent in an opener ever. Maryland scored early in the first quarter and took the lead. They held the lead and never looked back, Texas did played well but they had a lot of penalties and they just couldn't catch up in the end. Maryland won 51 to 41 and I am curious to see how they will do against tough Big 10 opponents.

Josh Rosen and UCLA

Josh Rosen  just played the best quarter of football I have ever seen in my life. Texas A&M was up 44 - 10 over the UCLA Bruins earl;y in the 3rd quarter. UCLA was getting destroyed, UCLA QB Josh Rosen was getting hit all of the time and the defense was not stopping the Aggies offense. But Josh Rosen and the UCLA defense had enough of this crap. Texas A&M did not score another point for the rest of the game and UCLA scored touchdowns on their next 5 possessions all in the 4th quarter. Josh Rosen did a fake spike and threw into the end zone for a touchdown to take the lead 45 - 44 with under a minute left in the game. This was the second biggest comeback in NCAA history with a comeback deficit of 34 points. Josh Rosen had a career high 491 yards and 4 touchdowns. 292 of those yards and 4 touchdowns were all in the 4th quarter. Josh Rosen is now the Heisman front runner in my books and UCLA just played one of the best college football games ever.
