Splinterlands - Chaos Legion: Day one meta report

Chaos Legion has arrived, and it is a very exciting time to play Splinterlands. New cards means lots of new strategies, and it will be some time before we know what the best options are. Several older summoners are no longer freely available, which has a huge consequence on the game meta. No longer will we see endless hordes of Alric Stormbringer at the lower ratings. What will take his place?

Before you read on, take a second to guess which of the five new summoners that had the best first day.

Summoner win rates and play rates

Here are the results in our sample of day 1 matches. These data were sampled from ratings 400 - 2800, and the majority are in the lower rating range since that is where most players are. The data consist of a total of 130000 matches, so they are quite representative of the player base's first attempts at the different decks.
The data look like this:

Losing summoners

So, for the five new ones, day one data suggest that the overall scoreboard is:

  1. Thaddius Brood
  2. Obsidian
  3. Kelya Frendul
  4. Tarsa
  5. General Sloan

It was perhaps not too surprising that Obsidian does well. Magic is going to be strong in most cases, and the Earth deck got several new strong magic cards. Thaddius Brood beat her though, perhaps due to him directly countering Obsidian, with an extra -1 HP to go with it. This is pretty reminiscent of last seasons situation with Alric Stormbringer and Bortus. However, this time the ruleset might lock out Thaddius Brood from the match, leaving less room to counter Obsidian. It will be interesting to see how the situation develops.

Kelya Frendul and Tarsa do well, and sit comfortably above 50% win rate. Poor General Sloan is the only one of the five that came out with a sub-50% win rate, and he fell pretty far below aswell. Ranged decks are vulnerable if they lose their front line, and with Life's Void tank (Clay Golem) gone from the f2p set, its quite challenging to face any magic damage. Time will tell if there are ways to get around General Sloan's weaknesses.

This is really cool! I'd be interested to see analyses at different ratings. E.g. 400-1000, 1000-1900, etc. I imagine the win rates vary pretty heavily across them.

I'm working on that. A much more detailed post will be coming soon, just have to get enough data for it.
