This post was inspired by a recent comment I made to a high level Hive blogger who has been playing @Splinterlands in bronze and renting to silver3 each end of Season. He is a very intelligent investor but for some reason possibly just lack of time to do the deep dive on the maths he was performing his account growth in a sub optimal way.
This is what I have to say on the topic of advice for a bronze player with low CP deciding to rent vs buy cards to reach Silver 3.
In this specific case I really suggest buying the cards that have cheap CP/$ and fill out your deck. You can also use the cards to win more, or rent them if you don't want them later or sell them (hopefully at a profit).
Currently if you just bought the lowest cost per collection power it would only take $45.00 USD to get the 15,000 CP needed for Silver 3 where the rewards are much better. This difference in rewards will be widened in the new rewards revamp too.

He was spending 450 DEC at the end of each season so I based my math around that
Spending 450 DEC currently about $0.71 USD at the end of each season is $18.46 dollars per year just wasted and you don't get to enjoy the game as much without cards to play with. Plus you will get better daily rewards in silver 3, which is and extra $0.10 USD per day or $36.5USD per year compared to bronze 2 which will pay for more than the rest of the cost.

You also will get air drops of SPS because of the cards you own.
SPS airdrop for 15000 CP would equal to $12USD by the end of the SPS airdrop at current prices, which I expect to go up once nodes burns take place.
This math is based on todays prices:
So if the spend is $45USD for 15k CP
He will save $18.46 per year in rentals
He will gain an extra $36.5 in daily rewards
He will recieve $12 USD in SPS airdrops
Making for a total upside of $21.96 or 48.8% more profit plus still having the $45 USD of cards (if they don't change in price up or down)
PLUS!!!! He will own the cards forever!!!
And he will enjoy the game more with more choices!
All of these factors make the choice very simple in my eyes. Along with getting more enjoyment of the game in silver 3 instead of fighting the boring bot armies in bronze.
Just a my perspective that I think could be helpful to lay out for some of the newer players :)
